I have yearned to eat the best FISH fry forever. Especially baked/grilled fish. After a tiring 7 hour drive to Mackinac island, before boarding the ferry we went in here for lunch. Luckily, we found a special of the day - the Mackinac famous "White fish" grill with baked potato on top to give it a crusty edge. We customized our order to wood grilled. It came along with a salad + bleu cheese dressing. The salad quenched our thirst and refreshed us. Then came the Mr.Fish + crisp grated Potato on top. The perfect fish I have ever eaten in my life! Succulent in the inside, crispy on the top. I wish I drove to St. Ignace yet again for just the white fish.
Review Source:came to st. ignace in march. despite all the snow being melted, was let down to find many of the local businesses still closed until spring. stopped by here for lunch, got a buffalo chicken wrap that was on special and the soup and salad bar was pretty decadent! bar and restaurant were separate, but attached. bar had pool table/hockey/jukebox/etc and looked to have a bunch of tasty local brews on tap! and free wifi!
Review Source:Ate in the restaurant side a couple of times. Â Very cozy atmosphere with a fireplace and whitetail mounts all around. Â Food is excellent and service was very cheerful both times. Â The soup/salad bar is a little bland; but if I was to go back I would probably opt to try some of their whitefish spread instead anyways. Â It sounded good, and being in the UP there is rarely a shortage of tasty fresh whitefish :)
Review Source:When you are pretty much the only game in town after a certain time in the evening one could just rest on the "where else you gonna go" defense, not the Driftwood.
We decided to escape from the parents and little niece for some brother (and sister in law) time and wandered on over as we were told aside from the casino it was the only place to go. Happy we did. Sat on the front porch in some comfy furniture more akin to a real front porch rather than a bar/restaurant.
Their beer list has a number of local Northern Michigan small brews on tap and the staff is willing to make suggestions. Had a few of the Widow Maker Black Ale's with a appetizer combo plate. Delicious...
So good we headed back after dinner up the street the following night.
Stopped in for dinner on our anniversary, and we were not disappointed. The boneless wings were crisp outside and moist and juicy inside. The apple jelly sauce was good, but the Driftwood spicy sauce was awesome. Even bought a bottle for later.
My wife had the daily special: Lemon Pepper Grilled Chicken with fresh Green Beans and Mashed Potatoes. Chicken and beans were good, mashed potatoes were real, but a bit bland.
I had the Whitefish in a Bag with Potatoes and Veggies. It was amazing. Â Fish was tender and cooked perfectly, rubbed lightly with a great BBQ Rub. All-in-all we had an enjoyable meal. Would have given them five stars if our server would have been a bit more attentive (I had to go find some menus).
This restaurant is okay, but not amazing. Â They do have a nice patio with a pretty view of the water. Â I got the thin and crispy pizza--it was thin, but was loaded up with cheese, which made it floppy and greasy. Â Though, as Mel Brooks (or possibly Sharon Stone, depending on your quote source) said, "Sex is like pizza, even when it's bad--it's still pretty good." Â My husband has the whitefish in a bag; he said it was also okay--but not great. Â So, it's not a bad place for a bite--but you may be able to do better.
Review Source:Overall we had a good experience at driftwood. We had our two small kids with us who weirdly love salad, and our waitress said no problem to them eating salad with their kids meals. We enjoyed the salad bar too- especially the jalapeño ranch and buffalo ranch dressing.
I had the planked white fish. It was served beautifully on the wood plank surrounded by fluffy mashed potatoes piped around the edges. The fish was fresh and tasty, but the potatoes a little bland.
My husband had a steak and fish combo, I think it was perch. The steak was not good. Dry, kind of mealy, and although it was only slightly overcooked (medium instead of medium rare) it had a burnt taste to it.
My son's cod fish sticks  were fantastic  and the kids pizza was pretty good too. Service was nice and friendly.
Where in the sleepy hamlet of St. Ignace can you have a huge pasta dinner, a fresh salad bar (with soup) and pie and then come back the next night to watch football, eat pizza AND order pie and a six-pack to go and nobody bats an eye at any strange request? The Driftwood.
My fiance and I were in town to run the half marathon on Mackinac Island, but decided to stay on the mainland. And boy am I glad we chose the Upper Peninsula side of the mainland. Before the trip, the Driftwood seemed like the best bet for a decent carb-loading dinner before the Mackinac Island half marathon on Saturday. After the trip, it's all we could talk about.
Friday night, pre-race: We went to the restaurant side, where we each ordered pasta (she, chicken rigatoni; me, lasagna) with the decked-out salad bar (jalapeno ranch dressing was fantastic) and soup. Everything was fantastic, tasty and huge. The perfect fuel for the race, followed by a delicious piece of apple pie. Service was very friendly and ridiculously fast.
Saturday night, post-race: Looking for a place to watch football and have a light dinner, as we had a late lunch, we headed back to the Driftwood. The bartender recognized us from the night before and promised to turn on the game we wanted. We ordered the pizza bread, and he raved about how good it is and how we would be very happy. We ordered some beers and settled in. When the band arrived, he said they would probably play in front of the big screen, but we could still see. We decided to leave at halftime, so I said to him, "is it possible to get two slices of pie and some beer to go?"
His answer: I'm not going to ask about the combination, but absolutely. Let me see what pie I have.
We left with a slice of coconut cream, a slice of pumpkin and a six-pack of Bell's Two-Hearted.
And the price for the pizza, three beers we had at the bar, two pie slices and the to-go six-pack? $40. Plus a big tip for our friendly, affable, non-judgmental and eager to please bartender.
This is probably the longest review I've ever written, and for good reason. I can't say enough good things about this place.
Wow! Great fish dishes, super clean, and a salad bar that's immaculate and ever-filled to the brim with fresh salads and veggies and the home-made soup was such a treat on a coolish evening.
I had the white fish served on a cast iron skillet with a white wine reduction with all the fixins' for $12. It was fabulous!!
My wife had the planked white fish with perfectly roasted vegetables and ringed with duchess potatos for $13. And this was better yet!
Yes, by all means, if you;re in the area you gotta drift into the DriftWood!
