I have been to the Galley twice, both times ordering their broiled whitefish. The service has been fine both times, but the sides and the lack of seasoning and flavor in the fish leaves something to be desired. However, you are getting fresh whitefish when you go to this restaurant, which is nice to know.
I ordered vegetables and a salad with blue cheese dressings along with the broiled whitefish. The salad was alright, but like another reviewer pointed out, they use iceberg and not romaine which was a little disappointing. The vegetables were inedible. They were clearly from the can. I had a quick taste and decided against eating them. My boyfriend also ordered the whitefish, but ordered french fries and salad as the side. The fries tasted like they were out of a bag (not sure if they were, but the sogginess and lack of flavor lead us to believe so). The fish itself was good and tasted fresh, but generally lacked flavor that could have been brought out with a little more seasoning.
I believe if this place started using fresh local ingredients and at the very least experimented with a little seasoning, it would be a more frequented restaurant. The fact that they have an awesome property overlooking the lake is also wasted by the fact that they don't have a porch or outdoor dining area.
This is the place to go for local fish -- delicious broiled whitefish that you know came right from the waters outside the restaurant; bluegill (which gets my vote for most underappreciated, most delicious freshwater fish ever, and something every Michigan seafood restaurant should have on its menu); perch; lake trout (think of a cross between a trout and a salmon); walleye. If you're having trouble deciding, try the sampler, with deep-fried nuggets of whitefish, walleye, perch and lake trout. We also like the nautical ambience of the restaurant, and the friendly waitstaff. The only downside to our experiences here have been the "meh" vegetable side dishes and the fact that not all the fish have a broiled option. But overall the Galley is an enjoyable place with tasty fresh, local food.
