I have been to the Galley twice, both times ordering their broiled whitefish. The service has been fine both times, but the sides and the lack of seasoning and flavor in the fish leaves something to be desired. However, you are getting fresh whitefish when you go to this restaurant, which is nice to know.
I ordered vegetables and a salad with blue cheese dressings along with the broiled whitefish. The salad was alright, but like another reviewer pointed out, they use iceberg and not romaine which was a little disappointing. The vegetables were inedible. They were clearly from the can. I had a quick taste and decided against eating them. My boyfriend also ordered the whitefish, but ordered french fries and salad as the side. The fries tasted like they were out of a bag (not sure if they were, but the sogginess and lack of flavor lead us to believe so). The fish itself was good and tasted fresh, but generally lacked flavor that could have been brought out with a little more seasoning.
I believe if this place started using fresh local ingredients and at the very least experimented with a little seasoning, it would be a more frequented restaurant. The fact that they have an awesome property overlooking the lake is also wasted by the fact that they don't have a porch or outdoor dining area.
This is the place to go for local fish -- delicious broiled whitefish that you know came right from the waters outside the restaurant; bluegill (which gets my vote for most underappreciated, most delicious freshwater fish ever, and something every Michigan seafood restaurant should have on its menu); perch; lake trout (think of a cross between a trout and a salmon); walleye. If you're having trouble deciding, try the sampler, with deep-fried nuggets of whitefish, walleye, perch and lake trout. We also like the nautical ambience of the restaurant, and the friendly waitstaff. The only downside to our experiences here have been the "meh" vegetable side dishes and the fact that not all the fish have a broiled option. But overall the Galley is an enjoyable place with tasty fresh, local food.
Review Source:I took my family here while on vacation. I think I was profiled as a young punk when I walked in the door. The staff did not greet in till I asked if they were open. I want to say it was a good 15 - 20 minutes before our waitress came and got our drink order. The only other time I saw her was to bring the food, which was wrong. We sat for over 45 min to get our dinner. I would find this normal if it was a Friday night and they were packed but this was not the case. We were one of 4 tables being served. I heard good things about the Prime Rib. I don't know if I got a bad chunk but it had no flavor and honestly tasted like hamburger. I escorted my family out after waiting 10 minutes after we choked down our meal and went back in to get the bill and let the manager know how my experience was. He stated that his waitress was not feeling well which I found to be a unacceptable excuse. If she is sick why is she handling my child's food. He then argued with me and said people travel from all over Michigan to eat their Prime Rib. When I told him I traveled close to 200 miles and have had better food from McDonald's he was not too happy. Needless to say I will not go back and we plan to vacation to St. Ignace again this year.
Review Source:So the food here was some of the best we had in St. Ignace. Local fish, local wine, no complaints.
The service on the other hand left much to be desired. Now I have never stuck out like a sore thumb more than I do in St. Ignace. People can tell I'm not from around here from miles away. Maybe it's me trying to bring my big city sensibilities to a small town, but certain things are basic customer service. I tried to ask a question about the wine list and was met with a mix of lack of knowledge and outright hostility. Attempts to ask for menu recommendations were met with an insistence that the whitefish (but not the Cajun whitefish) was the only thing worth ordering, even though we said we didn't want the whitefish. When I hesitated over whether I wanted dessert or not, our waitress quite literally walked away as I opened my mouth to ask her a question. Not that she would have answered a question anyway.
Overall, the experience left a bad taste in our mouth, despite the decent food. Â This is a shame, as we also enjoyed the $3.50 breakfast special that morning, and before this experience, it was on its way to our favorite restaurant in St. Ignace.
I think out of towners are sent here, its a comfy old school eatery feel, on the water. Â My husband got the fish sampler plate, fried fish, it was enjoyable. Â I got a pasty, don't repeat my mistake. Â Betsy's makes much better ones down the road...The Galley had some good local beers. Â The wait staff was nice. Â This was not a great culinary experience. Â Maybe the burgers are better, they looked better than our food.
