Maybe I'm biased because I grew up with this place (my mom waitressed here when I was a kid and my dad was a bartender a while back) but I love it. Western Bacon Burger with fries and a side of cheese sauce? delicious. The waitstaff hasn't changed much over the years and they love regulars. If you're looking for something different, this is definitely the place to go!
Also, the long islands are said to be the best in town!
As others have said Mining Company has it's (+) and (-).
Drink prices are good and "The Cave In" is a good drink and pretty potent too.
Atmosphere is pretty mixed as people of young and old seem to come together and have a good time.
However, the staff is slow as they talk amongst themselves more than they do with the customers and the sandwiches seem to have gotten smaller.
Overall not too bad of a place.
If I could chant something as I enter to Dubuque Mining Company, it would be "OVERRATE!"
When I arrived in Dubuque someone told me they had the best hamburgers in all of Dubuque. Â There is a Burger King across the street, so I doubt the even have the best hamburgers on JFK. Â They are small, always over cooked, and over sauced. Â The beer is cheap, and if you happen to be of age, people rave about the Cave Ins and the Blue Lanterns (I think those are the names; I"m not a mixed drink drinker).
The service is pretty shoddy. Â Staffed mostly with college girls whose idea of good service is wearing tight shirts with scooped necklines. Â They do have some good TVs, and it's not a horrible place to watch a game if you were looking for some cheep beer, but I would avoid the food. Â Heck; make a run to BK across the street beforehand.
They had proudly displayed that they were voted for best Bloody Mary in the DBQ area for a number of years.. Every Friday night we go out for bloodies, and given the reviews and "awards" printed and displayed - one would think we may have hit the mother-load. We were wrong. I'm guessing one of the ingredients is clam juice, which a splash may have been fine - unfortunately mine and boyfriend's tasted the same, clammy.
I guess if I were a walrus, or maybe a sea otter - it would have been the bloody for me.
Just visiting the Dubuque area from Chicago, this is a typical local casual bar/grille nothing fancy, you seat yourself, menus at the tables, pop/water in mason jars and the food is good. Burgers a little small, fries are plenty, its an $ 8.00 burger, you get what you pay for. Games on TV, didn't encounter the smokey atmosphere others talked about but it was a slow Sunday night. A nice, old school place when you want to avoid the chains and just have a good burger.
Review Source:My friends and I enjoy grabbing a burger from the Mining Co. every now and then. It sucks that they're located in Dubuque's pathetic excuse for a mall, but once you're inside you sort of forget about that. Water and pop are served in mason jars, which I think is adorable, and the lighting is dim so it has a very relaxed vibe. The burgers are pretty good, especially the green olive/swiss burger. Fries are also great. It's a Dubuque favorite.
Review Source:The Mining Company has been around for as long as I can remember, and that's going back to the seventies. It's located at the front entrance of Kennedy Mall which guarantees plenty of traffic. I'm giving the place three stars for perfectly decent bar food with friendly service. But if smoke bothers you, don't bother stopping here - you *will* smell like an ashtray by the time you leave.
