ORDERED: Lynton Haddock Fish Sandwich (Our classic fish and chip haddock served on a Sheboygan Hard Roll with lettuce, tomato, and homemade tartar sauce.) $10.95. I chose sweet potato fries with house made curry sauce.
TASTED: Great sandwich! The haddock fish, along with cod, are the most widely used fish in Britain's fish and chips. (Warning: I long ago learned not to Google image search the various fish I consume.) The house made tartar sauce added a nice tart bite to cut through the fried fish and the locally made bun held its own. The sweet potato fries were the crinkle cut variety, looking similar to Culver's. Devon's curry sauce is awesome!
Note: The bread and butter served before the meal is outstanding. I found myself dipping fries in the butter.
I drank a few cups of locally roasted coffee although I can't remember or find the name of the roaster. A great lunch, great service with an unexpected focus on farm to fork.
Dined on Jan 23rd, went out with a friend. Â After we had been there for about 1 hour and had finished dinner and dessert (no alcohol), finishing coffee, we got our bill, paid cash, and did not get all of our change. Â After this, a waitress (not ours) came and said that the reservation for this table was here, "so you'll have to leave". Â This took us aback, and we got gathered up and stepped aside to out on our coats. Â The same waitress came back and rudely said "the door is THAT way", and pointed. Â We told her we were putting on our coats, and she said "Oh". Â So again, did not get all our change back, no receipt, and seemingly could not be kicked out of there fast enough.
Review Source:Went here on a chilly Friday night. We got in just in time to find 2 seats together at the bar while we waited for a table to open up. The service at the bar was so great we decided to stay there to eat while we chatted. The ambiance is low-key, nice and friendly. There were several 'regulars' at the bar who joked with the bartenders. The food was good- huge portions! All-in-all, I'd go back!
Review Source:The beer and drinks were great; most of the food was great.
We loved the mussels in curry sauce. Â The frites were fantastic.
What was going on with the Cobb salad? Â While they had clearly taken care to serve freshly cut tender slices of avocado, the radicchio was hard and so bitter that it overwhelmed the whole salad. Â (Good radicchio is hard to find. Â It should be sweet, tender with a bitter edge.) Â And the clam strips on the salad? Â What are they thinking? Â Clam strips are hollow and flavorless. Â Without the whole belly of the clam, fried clam strips have no excuse to exist, let alone being served on a Cobb salad. Â The salad experience literally left a bitter taste in our mouths.
We love this family of restaurants. Â On this Sunday night, Stefano and the pizza place were closed.
Cozy, beautiful, delicious and friendly! Â I love eating here...mussels (either the curry or the pesto) are AMAZING! Â Fish and chips are always spot on. Â Mushrooms on toast are my favorite appetizer...actually, whatever I have eaten here has been exceptional. Â Servers are knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. Â Sitting outside on the deck, overlooking the river is about as good as it gets on a summer evening. Great beer selection. Â Get the Churchhill Crispy Chicken!!
Review Source:Stopped in the night of the first Packers game of the season and it was a ghost town. (to my delight since we had been moving all day and I looked like crap). There were only five of us at the bar and I felt like I was in some kind of fun movie on a coast somewhere.
Our bartender/server was an absolute gem and the beer was delicious! My husband had the chicken sandwich (which he loved) and I was oh so delighted to find out they had Shepherd's Pie that night with goat cheese mashed potatoes. But you know what was truly awesome? The vegetables. I'm not kidding.
The quality of the food at Duke of Devon was superb. I was really blown away by everything. I can't wait to go back and try one of their English curries!
We had a reservation but were sat beneath the TV behind the bar. Our waitress was very nice.. Ordered the salad with salmon and companion had the fish and chips. Very authentic. Would sit at the bar next time. Turned on to the alcoholic ginger beer and it will be forever a summer drink for me. A little pricey for what you get.
Review Source:Having grown up Catholic in Wisconsin Friday night fish fries were a tradition and having spent time in England found that even English people don't like English food.
Went to the Duke of Devon English Pub & Eatery on the recommendation of other Yelp reviewers but I was not overly impressed. While the food was good it was nothing to write my English friends about.
I had the "traditional" English fish & chips, this was a block of haddock (bout 1" thick x 4" x 8"), I wish they had cut this into 3 or 4 pieces as to cook the fish through the batter was greasy and a little burnt tasting, set this on top of fried potatoes and you get greasy soft chips. And I don't know any Englanders that like mushy peas.
We sat down for an early dinner, the dinning room is very small, and by the time we were done the restaurant had filled up so it felt like the guests sitting next to me were actually sitting at my table.
Suggestion, cut the fish up so it cooks better and it will cook faster to get food out to dinners quicker.
I would go back the next time I am in Sheboygan, but I think I would try something else, perhaps the bangers & mash.
I didn't expect to be impressed by this place. Â Maybe because I take bad reviews to heart too much. Â But my dad wanted to go here for lunch, so we did. WOW! Â I thought it would be busy, but I think we got there before the lunch rush. Â We were seated promptly. Waitress was enthusiastic and provided very good service. Â They had wonderful specials. Â I had a Duchess burger, which is their locally sourced beef with a "local" mushroom medley and aged cheddar. Â It tasted so incredibly good. Â Usually I like ketchup and mustard on a burger, but the flavors in this concoction stood on their own. Â Â I am craving another one 7 hours later :) Â Fries were warm and perfectly done. Â Husband had one of the specials which was a lamb meatball pita sandwich, and it was very flavorful. Nothing was greasy. Â Dad's salad was very filling. Â Stepmom's chicken sandwich was on wonderful homemade bread.
We will definitely be going back.
Had the Empire Chicken Sandwich - it was ok. The chicken on one end was a little over done - but it was still relatively tasty. Along with the sandwich I had the sweet potato fries. Probably the most disappointing thing is they no longer serve an English Breakfast! For the amount of food, it is actually a little surprising how expensive the food is. For the chicken sandwich with fries as $14.
The seating is plentiful, and there are some booths that can accommodate up to about 8 people - something you don't typically find in a restaurant anywhere. If you are looking for a place to seat a slightly larger group (like the 8 to a booth) you are good to go. However, be sure to have reservations if you would like to have a larger group.
If it is a nice day, take advantage of the outdoor seating too. They are right along the water, so if it is in the afternoon the seating is mostly shaded.
It is worth noting, the kitchen does close during the afternoon sometime between lunch and dinner. I arrived with a group right around 2:30 - and we were able to order - so my guess is they close between 3-4 in order to prep for the evening menu.
The Duke of Devon is our go to stop when we are in Sheboygan visiting our good friends.
The atmosphere is great. I especially love the empowering statements found in the women's bathroom. Check them out - if you are female that is!
My favorites include the picadilly pizza and the traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. They even provide malt vinegar at the tables which is a sign of authenticity in my book.
The D of D is not particularly child friendly, not for a toddler that is. My daughter does not like anything on their children's menu. I usually have brought in food for her and that was never a problem. The quarters are kind of tight, there is not much wiggle room, so we usually end up walking outside on the board walk until our meal comes.
There is outdoor seating with a great view of the harbor.
The waitstaff are friendly and attentive.
Their changing menu includes local produce and fresh takes on traditional British food.
check it out when you are in town.
I love this place and I come here at least once every time I'm in town. The outdoor patio is pleasant. My favorite is the burger with mushrooms and aged cheddar. I am not big on the Applebee's-style kitch on the walls but the beer selection is always interesting and the staff is great.
Review Source:I hadn't been here for a few years, but went for dinner last month. Had the chicken sandwich with the side salad and it was very good. The waitress suggested a nice wheat beer to go with. And I thought, why don't we come here more often?
It also was interesting because two women at the next table asked a ton of questions before they ordered. One was extremely fussy about how well her burger was done (had to slice into it, sent it back once). The other sent back her steak salad, after she had eaten quite a bit of it, and got a totally new one. The waitress was very patient and accommodating, but I thought the customers were wannabe foodies who thought they had to criticize every little thing. But.... maybe their experience was actually more typical of the quality here than mine because....
Today we went for lunch and it was a total disappointment. My friend's burger with bleu cheese and carmelized onions was very skimpy on the cheese and hardly any onions. My fish sandwich was served on a stale roll which was basically inedible, and the salad had a light dressing with no flavor whatsover, rather like they sprinkled a little oil on it and that was it. For those two items and two iced teas: $30! not including the tip. In hindsight, I wish I had complained because I think it's important that consumers speak up when it's warranted (although personally, I would never send anything back to the kitchen for a redo, paranoid person that I am).
Having said that, they have a great deck on the river. We'll go back, but only to have drinks on the deck and maybe try an app (or maybe just drinks!). But I don't think we'll spend any more money on a meal here. There are many restaurants in Sheboygan with better food and lower prices. This restaurant is related to Stefanos/Field to Fork/Il Ritrovo, and, any of those (although also kind of pricey) would be better choices. And there are many others as well.
Happened upon this place while exploring Sheboygan. Top notch service and my Duchess burger was excellent. Grilled perfectly. The side salad was not an after thought as in most restaurants; fresh, crisp greens with a light and tasty vinaigrette. Unique ambience with many photos and displays of British tchotchkes. If I lived in Shebogan, I would be a frequent guest at this establishment.
Review Source:We ate here one evening during our stay at the Blue Harbor Resort. They looked at us funny when we didn't have a reservation, but we didn't realize how small the place was so maybe that was their reasoning? It is very intimate and they had a table ready very quickly considering we had two children with us. The food was served very quickly and it was quite tasty. I was happy to see that they had cider available, but was sad that it wasn't on tap. My son (2 1/2) really enjoyed their fried fish and chips and playing with the set of dominos. They had other games available for adults and older children. Overall, it was a great find in Sheboygan and I would recommend that, if you are looking for a pub-like atmosphere with walls slathered in pics of royals and Rowan Atkinson, this is the place for you!
Review Source:We stopped here for lunch on our way to Door County.
The service was great. The waitress was friendly and got me a larger glass of water when she saw I was almost done with my initial small glass.
I got the tenderloin sandwich. I really enjoyed this sandwich. The horseradish sour cream sauce was subtle and added
great flavor without being overwhelming. The onion ring on the sandwich had a very light tasty breading.
My hubby got a beef barley soup to start and said it was good. He then had the union jack burger. He said it was just ok. The burger was a little over cooked and was overwhelmingly salty probably due to the bacon. He felt it needed some sort of sauce to pull it all together.
He really enjoyed his New Glarus Chocolate Abbey beer.
I had a special salad and it was good but the cured salmon was a small square and did not taste fresh. Â The salad had tempura snap peas which were really unique and delish,
We sat in a booth with a curtain, that was neato. I thought the waitress was great and loved the atmosphere and beer selection.
I think I ordered incorrectly!!! First off, we had the chips with curry sauce, these were excellent, especially with the malt vinegar drizzled all over the place. We were both looking forward to our entree "The Union Burger". A Grass Fed Burger patty with port reduced red onions and bacon (still sounds delicious) however it was disappointing. Not sure what it was missing or if the flavors didn't jive but for $13 you expect a perfectly crafted burger. I saw a bunch of other dishes going out to the tables which looked way better than what I got. Our waitress was very good and if I wasn't there for lunch it looks like a great spot for a beer. I hope to try this place again even though the menu is very difficult to find something that is appetizing.
Review Source:As a "foodie", My emphasis is first on the food - everything else is secondary. The Duke delivers big time on food, and not far behind is the decor and location. I had the fish specials (mussels in a curry sauce, lake perch) that were exceptionally good - fresh and prepared as fish should be.
My companions had similar comments on their choices - all top rate.
Service was good, the wait staff very pleasant which added to the overall experience. Overall the Duke is not to be missed as a first class dining experience.
I'll make this quick.
Great beer selection, friendly service, warm and inviting atmosphere.
Must haves: curry chips, chicken curry, burger, lamb burger, and the battered haddock. Their specials are normally very good too. Just had a great potato chip crusted cod that was amazing. I could probably live without the fish sandwich and shepherd's pie.
They also have a nice little patio to sit on when the weather is nice. Great for people watching and enjoying the peaceful area.
This is a must stop for me and the fiance any time we get back to Sheboygan.
The food at this place really disappoints. Â It is fine for a beer while watching football. Â Had the chicken which was pan fried in a crust that was saturated with seasoning and served with gritty spinach and greasy potatoes. Â The meat pie with mashed potatoes covered in cheese was not much better. Â Service is very friendly and I know the specialty is "pub grub," but they should be able to combine beer and food with better results.Skip it if you are hungry.
Review Source:We came here as a big group on a Sunday afternoon. Â There is outside seating overlooking the river, with big shade umbrellas and surprisingly comfortable wood benches. Â
Our waitress was very warm and friendly, attentive without being annoying. Â
They have lots of beer on their menu and I tried a lovely British wheat beer. Â We also ordered some sandwiches, oysters (fried), and curry fries for the table to share. Â The food was very tasty and the Midwest portions were just right for a big group to share.
I would have given this place a 5 star review but the menu was limited to a lot of fried items and the sandwiches were very cheesy and hammy...I guess the above sentiment is redundant since we all know this was Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
But still...I really liked this place, I would go back there next time we're in town.
Happened upon this place by accident while driving around downtown Sheboygan. The Duke of Devon is modeled after authentic English pubs, and is situated next to the water. Â They have an excellent selection of beers and ales along with a fantastic menu featuring adaptations of true British fare. Â
I had the Fish & Chips platter, which is made with Haddock, rather than the cheaper Cod fish that is served in England. Â Fried to a luscious golden brown, the coating kept the fish inside moist and sweet. Â The chips were akin to steak fries, chunky pieces of potato with soft interiors and crispy exteriors. Â The dish also came with an English favourite, mashed peas. Â A few splashes of malt vinegar were all we needed to make the dish taste authentic. My dining companion had a special of the day, which was a beef curry over basmati rice. Â The beef was made more flavourful with the addition of sauteed spinach and a kicky hot pepper sauce. Â
The other way that the Duke of Devon differs from pubs in England was a large bank of windows on the pub's east side. English pubs don't have windows and their woodwork is usually darker. I appreciated those windows and the view of the river and the pub's 24-seat outdoor dining area they afforded me.
I felt the owner has also done an artful job of decorating. He's covered most of the pub's walls with an assortment of photographs, prints and framed quotations, all in true British style. Â You will get an eyeful of pictures of everyone from the Rolling Stones, to Princess Diana, to the Queen herself. Â
I would have liked to have taken advantage of the outdoor seating, but sadly it was flurrying out while we were there. Â Our seat next to the window though, was very pleasant, and we had excellent service to boot. Â A definite must the next time you are in Sheboygan.
