Jumblya was good. Lots of shrimp and crawfish, very spicy. Ask about lunch specials, they are not on the menu.

Duke's Cajun Grill in Mighty Portland MI is quite the hot spot in the summer time on the patio. On a day of deluge in April, it is a good spot to reacquaint and quell the thirst. Dukes has often been a spot for me to venture to, partly because the options in the metropolis are limited and partly because they do have good food! I have had several of the menu items in the past to include the burgers. Dukes has a decent beer selection and I was happy to try a Michigan brew Perrin. This beer would have been better under the springtime sun, but who can control these things. The burgers we tried were the Bayou and the Bacon Cheddar. Both were half pounders and both came with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The Bayou had BBQ sauce, peppers, and pepper jack cheese. ( My personal fave!) The Bacon Cheddar came with..... Bacon and cheddar!

Both burgers were cooked perfect and our glasses never reached the bottom. The service should have been amazing, since my sister was part of the wait staff things better have been prime. With or without the family staff, Dukes is a fun place for beers and good food!

Let me start by saying we ate here once a year or so ago. I don't remember exactly what we had, but I do remember walking away very happy with our experience. Knowing this, we decided to meet the inlaws for dinner to celebrate Mother's Day.  Portland is 1/2 way between our houses, so we decided to make it easy for all of us- but let's face it, there aren't a ton of choices to eat in this town. Duke's it was.

I was very excited to go back and eat here, so I walked in with deservedly-so high hopes. Sadly, a good dinner was not in the cards. Our party of 5 ordered the following: Chips/Salsa for app, Thin crust pepperoni/mushroom pizza, nachos with grilled chicken, shrimp jambalaya (with the waitress recommended jalapeno pasta instead of the rice, and kids chicken strips/fries. All sounded wonderful. Now for the low-down on the choices: Chips/Salsa- Chips seemed overdone, salsa was good/ok, but not enough of it.  Pizza: Tons of crust (and not in a good way), tons of rubbery cheese, hardly any toppings. Nachos: Obviously sat under the lights too long. Burned chips on top, soggy chips in the middle. Jambalaya/Pasta: Tasteless. Not spicy at all, not really anything at all, just tomato-ey. It also sat under the lights forever, and was dried out on the top. Chicken fingers: Dried out and thisclose to being all out burned.

Overall, very unimpressed. We had such high hopes for this to be a great meal, and we all left pretty disappointed.  Bummer.

Great location. We sat on the patio. Food was great. Big portions. The service was very friendly.

Got jambalaya, gumbo and garlic mashed potatoes. It wasn't bad. I wouldn't say it blew my mind, but I was pleased, especially for a town like Portland. I'd come back, but wouldn't go out if my way to come here again.  Service was very friendly and prompt.

I really wish I could say more good things because MI must support these independent places - but my small party's experience was this:  The burger (fries too) was good, the local beverage selection was very good as was the service.  That's about it.

Try.  The.  Gumbo.  Being a Cajun restaurant, Duke's needed to have good gumbo for me to be a fan and they truly did.  Likewise, the hushpuppies are delicious.  I also had a black n bleu burger cooked to order and was perfectly done.

The atmosphere is casual and perhaps a little too close.  However, the food and the service more than made up for any atmosphere issues.

Without going into a lot of detail.. this is a really great place for Portland MI.  I've been here a half dozen times or more and always have enjoyed the food.   They spice it up real nice and 'cajun' like.

The pizza is good, the cajun is good and when the weather is nice, they have a terrific little bar/deck outside.

We met friends here because it is near the middle between Williamston and Grand Rapids. What a surprise. When we walked in I knew it could be a nice surprise or a horrible experience. The place is not much to look at. It is a very simple bar & grill.

The food is, however, is quite good. I had a pizza with garlic & olive oil base topped with ham, italian sausage and pepperoni. I was quite pleased with it. I am picky as far as pizza goes and this was solid. My wife had a cajun pasta dish that was quite tasty as well.

My one knock was with the salad. The honey mustard dressing was essentially pure mustard. I like mustard, but it needs the balance of the honey to make it a suitable dressing.

I was stunned to see the Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay on the wine list, and it was only $45. I have seen it for nearly twice that at some restaurants.
