I was very underwhelmed by this place. The patio area was very nice, but the food was not as nice. I was really looking forward to this place, as the owners are cousins of the fabulous Church Street Cafe. Fajitas were ordered, and the corn tortillas were stiff. They also came out lukewarm.
Review Source:Over-rated quaint tourist stop with the prices to go with it. Â To say that in the desert even a muddy rain water pool seems like an oasis might explain it better. Â In Santa Fe or Albuquerque this place would not be anything special and the prices would have to be lower to survive. Â Perhaps the ambiance was on vacation when I visited. Â Felt more like an inconvenience than a welcomed guest getting seated. Â My server mostly did a very good job, but my meal was a 3 out of 10. Â Perhaps ordering fish tacos in the desert is not the best idea, but how can you not get a decent piece of fish anywhere these days? Â It still doesn't account for the poor preparation. Â Frozen fish sticks from Costco are better than what was in my tacos, which I would sum up as poorly breaded, poorly fried, white-colored and tasteless supposedly-fish mass. Â
It was more like mash with zero texture other than the freshly chopped cabbage. Â Getting three large tacos that otherwise could have otherwise been great with decently prepared fish did not make up for the situation. Â Maybe it had been sitting in a freezer for several years? Â Maybe the oil was not up to temp? Â Maybe it came out of frozen food section box of the lowest grade, cheapest price manufacturer? Â Maybe my expectations were too high for a late Sunday afternoon $25 no-alcohol lunch experience for one person?
I also didn't want to pay $9 for chili con queso just for myself and instead got a skimpy little side serving for $4 or $5. Â It was OK, but again nothing special. Â The tortilla chips seemed like a no name out of the store bought bag brand. Â The salsa with a kick I did like very much, but never got a refill after the first serving. Â Maybe they thought the queso order was enough to get me by? Â I give up ...
Next time I will either stop or wait to eat in Durango, Santa Fe, or Albuquerque.
Liked -- atmosphere and pleasant surprise in Cuba, NM. Also appreciated the waitstaff. Dis-liked -- Chili Rellenos were, I think, the worst I've had in a long time. The first ones came to the table as very skinny peppers with no cheese stuffing and way too much batter. Waitstaff had them replaced, but kitchen prepared very skinny pepper with some cheese in them, still way too much batter, and overcooked to brown-black. The rice and beans were very good. Waitstaff-prepared table-side guacamole was great. The waiter was attentive, understanding and very pleasant. All in all, it only put a small damper on our trip to Chaco Canyon.
Review Source:Wow! I'm impressed with the resturant style and mini boutique.
-Gotta have the chips and salsa and queso its soo yummy!
-Clothing is super expensive...
-the sopapillias (spelling?) Its sooo good with honey
-great customer service
-needs a waiting area for take out orders. (My legs were hurting waiting for 20mins)
-close to hubby's grandmas home and easy to order from
-outdoor seating is so nice
-food is soo delish!
I was totally disappointed with my meal here. After hearing how great it was from a few family members we stopped her on our way back from Abq.
The waiter was unaware in a change in policy and wouldn't let us order from the lunch special menu while others around us ordered from it. We decided to get the platter for 2 and was not impressed.
The chili on the tamale was YUCK!, the enchilada was soggy and mushy...the chili releno tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. Best part of the meal was the chips and salsa.
Fabulous ambiance, decently yummy food.
We were driving from Albuquerque to Telluride, CO, and had resigned ourselves to the fact that lunch would likely end up being a Subway attached to a gas station. Seriously, there weren't many towns along 550, and the ones we spotted didn't seem like they'd have healthy or veg-friendly options. We Yelped our way to El Bruno's. One peek at the back patio, and I was in heaven.
This road trip, you see, was of the romantic variety, and that back patio was magical. They get five stars for ambiance. I'd say 3-4 stars for food, which was standard fresh Mexican fare: tasty, but not mind-blowing. The salsa was nice and spicy, which earns some bonus points. Our server was sweet but committed a few faux pas, such as telling us she'd "never done this before" as she made our table-side guacamole, or allowing my BF to order this Asian/Mexican salad, and then delivering it to table and notifying him they didn't actually have the Ginger Sesame dressing. She gave him the options of Italian or ranch, which are quick ways to ruin an asian/mexican salad. He ate it dry. (What is this, prison?) The salad COULD have been good, though. That's more of a service problem.
I would absolutely stop here again, especially once everyone's settled into their recent menu changes. It wasn't a cheap road lunch, but a great setting to relax during an epic road trip. And I miss that patio. Sigh.
It's nice to find a gem like El Bruno's as you travel the 550 from Farmington to Albuquerque in the winter. This well-decorated restaurant carries the warmth and charm of it's owners Hazel & Bruno (see the story at http://www.elbrunos.com/); who you are very likely to see when you visit. I highly recommended getting loads of fresh, hot sopapillas with honey; at $0.50 a pop you'll have to get a dozen! We also tried the 3 taco and Carne Adovada plates, and a margarita. All were well-prepared, and super delicious. This might have been the best Carne Adovada I've ever had in my life ... spectacular!!! Make sure to pay Hazel & Bruno a visit if you are ever in Cuba, NM. You will not be disappointed.
This was a *A Chu-E Especial* by Jaime Rodriguez, Jr.
i knew we would be headed through some smaller towns on our last road trip, so in preparation i checked out a site called 'road food' http://www.roadfood.com/… and found brunos.
the interior of the restaurant was nice... open floor plan, cute decor and lots of outdoor seating (the chairs i found slightly awkward). the chips and salsa were good though not spectacular. i tried the enchilladas de herrera (beef with red chile) which were accompanied by a basket of sopapillas and a bottle of honey. i liked the enchilladas (though again, not groundbreaking), the sopapillas were not my thing. the beans that came with the plate though, were amazing. i'm not sure what it was that i found so appealing, but i could have eaten an entire meal of only those beans. my mans had the fish tacos and found them to be satisfactory, though i think he would have preferred them to be prepared with a lighter batter.
i think i must have been expecting something mind blowing when in reality maybe i should have been satisfied with finding any food at all.
This restaurant is surprisingly large and well organized but still quaint with patio dining for it's obscure and remote location in Cuba, NM. I can only assume that the majority of their business is from tourists visiting Chaco Canyon or just passing through.
They surprised me with their good (but not great) quality blue corn enchiladas. The red chile sauce was a stand out and if the restaurant had maintained this level of quality with all of it's items would have earned one or two more stars. The cheese was not quite sharp enough to add a good flavor and the tortillas were a little mushy.
If you happen to be in this neighborhood, this restaurant is a good bet.
Low-key and tastefully simple decor frame well-made Southwest and Continental cuisine. Â The "Peen Yohn" crusted Rainbow Trout is very good. Â The drinks are extra strong, so plan on getting smashed quite easily in nothing flat, and walk back to your motel, as the police of Cuba (who are tragically hip to these facts) are overly eager to cite folks driving away from El Bruno's after dinner.
