Absolutely amazing.. I had just landed in Spokane from San Diego, The Hampton shuttled me there, I got a shot of Jamo and a great bowl of gumbo, some chicken quesadilla and a couple great tacos. So good, we left early from Montana just to have lunch in Spokane before our flight back to San Diego. Got the Amazing Ruben and Chicken Santa fe was alright... Great beer selection.
Review Source:Ate here two nights in a row, having a salad the first night and the Moon Burger with corn pasta salad and tomato soup on the second; beer both nights. Â It wasn't really very busy, but it was early in the week, the music was great, playing The National. Â I like stopping in Spokane as I travel east on I-90 toward Montana; there are several good place to eat in the area.
Review Source:Went for a veggie burger, but found a Swimming Angel. Â First of all, they don't have veggie burgers anymore. Â So after having searched in Yelp for a veggie burger in Spokane and arriving to find they don't have them, I was kind of disappointed. Â But at the advice of the waitress, I tried the Swimming Angel with tofu instead of chicken and it was really good. Â I'd be happy to go back and have another. Â Service was good, not great, prices are reasonable as is portion size. Â I'd go back.
Review Source:I went here for the very first time. I had the grilled lamb sandwich with their famous corn pasta. The woman next to me at the bar said I made 2 excellent choices. She loves the pasta and her husband's favorite sandwich is the grilled lamb. I would agree, the choices were excellent. The lamb was moist and seasoned well. I really liked the corn pasta as well. It has a unique texture, as if there is ground corn in the mixture and has a nice spicy bite at the end of each bite. It complimented the sandwich perfectly. Â There is a good beer selection, but I wished there were more options or that they brewed their own. On a side note, the place was very busy on a Friday night. From what I have been told the place is busy most nights.
Review Source:We saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and the food looked amazing, so when we were in Spokane we had to visit. And I'm so glad we did!
Staff are friendly and attentive, but not overly so. But the best reason to come is for the food.
I was longing to try the BBQ Chicken Quesadilla. When it came out, it didn't look fancy, but who cares, it tasted fantastic. And the smoked onion dip that comes with it is beyond amazing. There is a decent selection of beers, particularly canned and bottles from some small breweries that I've never heard of. I was particularly fond of a Hawaiian pineapple wheat beer.
I heard about this place on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives show. I was only flying in and out of Spokane and still found time to swing out to go get takeout and rush to my flight. It was well worth the stop! I got the Santa Fe sandwich with chips. I was worried the sandwich might not be as good because I got past security before eating the sandwich. It still kept its favor and the taste was great. I could only imagine if I ate it fresh. I wanted to try the 74th street Gumbo, but I wasn't sure if I could sneak that past the security check point. While I was waiting for the food, I did manage to get a drink. The waitress was very polite, made sure my food was packed correctly and made sure I was satisfied waiting. Excellent place and I will definitely stop by when I'm in the neighborhood again.
Review Source:This is a great place for innovative food, casual dining. I had the Catfish Hobo special. the fish was crisp, hot, seasoned well. Served with cole slaw in the sandwich, and surprisingly, the cabbage worked well.
I opted for the corn pasta salad. It is as good as it gets. Overall, a great meal.
Great service; attentive, friendly as always at the Elk..
The chicken quesadilla  (sp?) is fantastic - especially when you add jalapenos. If you order a sandwich, you can do 1/2 and 1/2 of chips and the famous corn pasta salad.
The service can be unpredictable at times as noted in some of the earlier reviews, but I don't mind. The great atmosphere and beer selection outweighs the occasional wait for service.
My only request is that if a customer orders a Stella, it should always come in the Stella glass - it just tastes better. I understand one might not always be available, but usually they are. Not complaining.....just a suggestion.
It was a nice little place, but very crowded during lunch time on a Thursday. Â Our service was spectacular. Â The beer? Â Not as great of a selection as Flying Goat, (who could be?!) Â but still not too shabby. Â I'd just go for the brews, though--our foods didn't astound me. Â It was by no means bad, but the chicken sandwich (they no longer had the black bean burger everyone on here was raving about) was just meh. Â The meat and cheese were so big that I had to take it out of the bun and eat it with a fork so as not to make a scene. Â The garlic cheese bread was greasy and HEAVY on the onions. Â And the onions were under the cheese so it wasn't easy to pick them off. Â The jalapeno chips sounded like a wonderful idea, but were just sort of greasy and not all that spicy or flavorful. Â But the brews and the service get an A-
Review Source:Went here for the first time. It was great! I had the french dip royale with the roasted corn pasta. Loved the sandwich, hated the pasta because it was way too spicy for my liking. Their sandwich featured real swiss, not the processed stuff. And the au jus that was served with it was very flavorful. I loved the addition of horseradish mayo added to the sandwich, which gave it more depth. Could have been more generous though with the horseradish though. Â
The servings here are generous, so if you are not a big eater it is best to skip having an appetizer.
My friend ordered the grilled lamb sandwich. The menu says it is suppose to be served with tzatiki sauce, which it was not. Not sure if it was a mistake by staff or our host. Friend liked her sandwhich. I had a bite and it was tender and perfectly seasoned. The side she chose was potato salad, which both of us were assuming was not going to be house made, but one bite of it told me it must have been made in the restaurant. The potato salad was great and flavorful and did not taste like the processed stuff you get at most restaurants.
The atmosphere was awesome and dimly lit. It was noisy, but the best part was there were no kids there to disrupt us adults who were wanting adult time where we did not have to hear at least one child throwing a fit and disturbing our meal.
Both me and my friend had a drink, she had a Kokanee long neck and I had a hot buttered rum. The drink menu said it was a house made buttered rum mix. It was flavorful and buttery and slightly spicy.
The price was definitely affordable and the meal and atmosphere is date night worthy imo.
I would move to Spokane if I could eat here once a week. I ordered the gumbo and I absolutely loved it. The food is made fresh daily. The place is sweet, humble, clean and kid-friendly. The service was pretty good until the end of our meal when we really needed some water to help us tame the aftermath of our gumbo. Still, I can't wait until my next visit to this pub.
Review Source:I heard this place was good on yelp and at work, but my experience was not good.
The bartender was overwhelmed and super busy, but it took him 10 minutes after I ordered my beer to bring it to me. I work in the industry, and I know what it feels like to be super busy, but dude, the tap is right behind you. Â Take care of your bar patrons.
Then I got a Hawaiian Sandwich that was one of the specials. Â The pork was dry and the flavor was weak, with the exception of the handful of cilantro unattractively globbed onto the sandwich... for some reason.
I don't give this place one star, because I have had worse, but I would not come back despite it's popularity.
This restaurant is in a really cute part of Spokane. It was a warm, sunny day and we enjoyed our dinner on the patio.
The food was solid but nothing special. Â I ordered the lamb sandwich and my man ordered the grilled cheese. The lamb could have used a flavor kick.
Overall, it was a good stop on our way out of Spokane.
Great beer on tap. Â
Food is high average.
Service is inconsistent, I've been here a few times and each time I felt there was a different standard of service. Â
Great patio.
I wish they served french fries, but that the glutton in me speaking. Â They have unique offerings. Â I wish they had more vegetarian options. Â Veggie Burger (B+), Mushroom Ravioli (A-), Garlic bread with caramelized onions (A), pesto salad (B-), corn pasta salad (B). Â
I'm so glad I live next to this establishment. Â
Cheers!
First, very cute neighborhood. Â Second, outdoor patio? Â Thank you! Â Third, nice cute waitresses, even on the Fourth of July (the day we came) with chipper attitudes and we all know working on the Fourth must not be the best option. Â Fourth, why did the food take so long to come out?! Fifth, thank you for the high chairs - my son appreciated it as did we.
Our group had the pork tacos, a sourkrout sandwich and lamb sandwich (with one substituted on the fancy bread) - thank you, and as for me - a black bean burger. Â Yum, but not yum enough to have me saying a 4.. more like a high 3! Â The pasta salad on the side was also delicious and quite large but more flavor might have made me crave it once I went home. Â The black bean burger was not bad, but there wasn't anything that special about it - nothing that my frozen Costco option couldn't have topped.
I got into Spokane late after driving from Seattle. Â I needed something quick, cheap and easy before bed. Â So I used my Yelp app and found Elk Public House.
I ordered the chicken Caesar wrap and it was really good. Â It came with a side of macaroni salad that was a little on the spicy side but very good.
Tatted up servers and good service.
I will be back if I go back to Spokane again.
It's a local hangout in a historical neighborhood. Â There is a variety of food that is standard pub grub with a few higher end surprises on the menu as well. Â The menu has stayed consistent throughout the years with very little change. Â There are mostly local beers served so no surprises there.
The service is friendly and mostly prompt. Â It's usually crowded so it is sometimes hard to find seating especially for a larger group. Â This also can make it hard to have a good conversation when inside because it can be a little loud due to the size, the crowds and the louder music. Â
In the summer the best thing about the Elk is the outside seating. Â It is hard to obtain outside seating in the summer due to the popularity of the place and the tendency to want to just hang out there because you can hear and it's nice and relaxing. Â I think the rating could be improved if they would include more outdoor seating and updates to the inside to reduce the noise level and seat more people.
Great selection of beer and even better selection of food. What else could you ask for? Service and ambiance? They got that covered as well. This place is in a small old district of town. It is a nice little gem without a whole lot around.
The food is way better than the average fair. Caeser salad with chicken, french dip sandwich, burgers, ravioli with mushroom cream sauce, homemade potato salad, Â lamb sandwich, ruben sandwich, the list goes on with goodness....
The beer is mostly NW. I am pretty sure it is all taps and no liquor but not positive.
The service was pretty good. I would hit this place up again if I was in town.
Horrible all around. We heard the place was on a TV show, so decided to check it out.
Service; slow and occaisionally rude. While we waited for drinks, I watched our waiter enjoying his own drink at the bar. Only 5-6 tables full in the restaurant, it was not busy.
Food: I was with a family group, 6 altogether. With apps, I probably sampled 6 different things. None of them were good.
The mac and cheese was the best thing on the table. Seriously?
I had a lamb sandwich which was a disgrace. The meat was so overcooked, it was absolutely impossible to identify it as lamb. I took their word for it.
We stayed at the E.J. Roberts Mansion Bed and Breakfast for one night before our flight from Spokane to DC. The wonderful innkeeper, Mary, recommended we go here for dinner over the French cafe and pizza place near Elk Public House (less than 2 minutes to walk).
What a great neighborhood place! A nice wine list of nearly all Washington State reds and whites. The Santa Fe Chicken is no ordinary sandwich; the chicken is perfectly breaded with poblano peppers, Monterey jack cheese, and ... wait for it ... honey cream cheese. All I could say was, "Wow." The Jalapeno Bean Burger was also excellent for all you vegetarians out there.
Would have loved to sit outdoors, but it was pretty full by the time we got there at 6:00pm on a Sunday night. Still, great atmosphere and great food.
This place saved my life while living in Browne's Addition, Spokane. I had recently moved from Seattle and suffered from the shock of losing so much culture and hip nightlife. The Elk had a lot of my favorite microbrews on tap, as well as good tunes and atmosphere.
I was a big fan of the Sante Fe chicken sandwich, as well as the Gorgonzola and onion bread. You can't go wrong the corn pasta salad on the side!
Another good thing about the Elk is that they rotate some good beers. Every week I could try something good, especially good dark beers ranging from porters to cappuccino stouts. The Elk definitely supports local WA brews!
Don't miss Elkfest!
3 stars is not bad.
I went here with my father-in-law after a day of skiing.
I enjoyed myself.
The food was good.
I had a thai chicken sort of thing with a little cucumber salad. Â The portions were nothing to shout about, the salad was really small.
The atmosphere and decor were nice.
I'd go here again, but probably only if I was in Spokane on a regular basis.
I don't feel liked I'd try to go out of my way to get here.
Also, it seemed just a little pricy compared to similar places I've been, and for what the portions ended up being.
I live in Brownes Addition but I rarely go to The Elk, I havent been back since July. Â The reason? Â The staff! Â They are horrible and slow and rude! Â One time we were sitting at the bar and we were trying to pay but we couldnt get the, not busy, bartenders attention, we stood up in our coats with our cash in our hands. Â We almost left because it took him another 15 minutes to come over and help us.
The reason why I gave it 2 stars is the food. Â I love the lamb sandwhich.
So now I go to the Two Seven where its owned by the same people, serves the same great food and has AN AWESOME AND ATTENTIVE STAFF!
This is a really good hole-in-the-wall spot. Â Heavily tattooed waiter, but a fantastic local (Northern Lights) IPA on cask. Â Had excellent weather and we ate on the patio at 9:30pm on a Monday in August. Â The patio was nearly full when we arrived, and still about half-full when we left. Â The food was varied and good, and the service was laid-back but attentive.
The neighborhood is mixed; mostly residential, with a few restaurants and a coffee store on the adjacent corner.
This restaurant/pub receives a lot of positive energy on Yelp, most of it deserved. I'll try and bring some new info to The Elk in convenient bullet-format:
- The food is quite good, especially for the price. Except for the "swimming angel", which is incredibly bland to me (I am biased though, I like MEGA spicy Thai-style dishes)
Some of my favorite dishes:
- Black Bean Burger: I originally had this when I was doing a vegetarian experiment (let's not talk about it) and I STILL eat it, it's that flavorful and good!
- Lamb Sandwich: kind of gyro-ish, all deliciousness
- Southwest Chicken Sandwich: when they say "pan fried" they may as well say "deep fried", that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just know that this delicious bastard is not exactly "healthy", don't you dare think you're "being good" by "getting the chicken sandwich"
- As others have said, the patio is great, and frequently gets packed to the brim.
The Beer:
- As far as I know, The Elk is the ONLY place in Spokane where you can get cask ale. These are beers served at cool temps (mainly ice-cold bud light drinkers would call them "warm") with naturally carbonation (again said bros would call them "flat") in the same manner that real ale is served in the UK. Definitely something to be aware of and try!
- Selection is pretty good all-around. Taps rotated frequently enough that you can always find something new.
- Most all handles are from NW microbreweries, including Spokane's own: Northern Lights
So why 4 stars?
-I'm not huge on the crowd that hangs out here at nights. It can be very sportsbar-esque/fratastic/snooty Gonzaga types. Your mileage may vary on this though, I don't want to sound like a stereotyping asshole (even though I am :) I usually just go here for late lunches/early dinners and spend my nights quaffing elsewhere.
- The beer is kind of pricey (this is, perhaps, how they give you the honestly-priced food) for Spokane. Â Most beer is at least $5/pint.
- THERE ARE NO SPECIALS/HAPPY HOURS/ETC HERE EVER! Â I'm not sure why this is, really. Â Perhaps they can afford to be stingy on this?
Also: the corn pasta lives up to all the hype it gets. There is a recipe on their website if you want to make this loveliness at home.
Amid the old & cool houses of Spokane's Browne's Addition neighborhood is the Elk Public House. Â This is an awesome place to get some above average pub food, decent draft brews, and some nice Spokane ambiance. Â
Our server took order as he was holding a young girl (not HIS daughter, but he looked like a natural). Â This place had a mixed crowd, and my meal mates and I had a nice time gettin our grub on before hitting a concert in Spokane.
The Elk Public House is a restaurant with style and magnetic powers for return visits.
I have been a fan of the Elk for many, many years. Â The atmosphere and service are great, the food and beer are even better. Â Many reviews have said that the patio is excellent, and it's true. Â On a warm summer day, you can bring your dog to the Elk and enjoy your meal on the patio. Â It's good times.
Let's talk about the food. Â I cannot get enough of the barbecue chicken quesadillas or the portabello ravioli with sun-dried tomato alfredo and chopped walnuts. Â The portion looks small at first, but it's not at all. Â The flavors of the portabello mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, and walnuts each pop in your mouth with every bite. Â It really is a great meal if you're looking for a vegetarian option. Â My next favorite is the turkey sandwich. Â Sounds simple? Â Try again - the pesto on the perfectly crispy bread is perfectly salty without being overbearing. Â It comes with a side, and you should definitely choose the corn pasta. Â It's not overloaded with mayonnaise or salt, has great texture and is quite filling. Â
Unless something has changed, they only offered the chocolate lava cake for dessert the last time I was in. Â If you have a sweet tooth, this treat does not fail to delight. Â It's not overly rich or too heavy. Â The moist cake is filled with a warm chocolate sauce and topped with a scoop of lightly flavored vanilla ice cream. Â Good stuff.
The beer options are nearly endless. Â The Elk is one of the only places in Spokane where you can get Stella Artois on tap. Â I am a big fan of Stella (if you haven't tried it and like lighter beers, give it a go.) Â They also have cider or wine options for those who aren't beer fans. Â
The service is great, and the ambience is friendly and welcoming. Â The Elk gets very busy on weekends, so grab a beer and wait for a table. Â If you're in town for Elkfest, don't miss it. Â Plenty of local bands come to celebrate all that is ELK and the street closes off to welcome the crowds.
The Apple Cup burger. I'll never be the same.
Much of my wife's family lives in Spokane and we make the trek over from Seattle a couple of times a year. Every time we are there we go to The Elk AT LEAST once. When we were there for Thanksgiving '08 we went twice. Â I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered there. In fact, on the first of 2 visits over T-Day I had what might have been the best burger I've ever had in a restaurant (the best burger was one I made from a ribeye I ground up but that's another story). That burger is the basis for this review.
The Apple Cup burger was a limited time special, commemorating that incredible 2008 showdown between 2 stellar college football teams. Well, that might be a stretch but I assure you the burger was not.
Meat: locally raised, grass fed, no antibiotics, no hormones, ground in house.
Cheese: Local milk, locally made, white, organic
Red onions: Washington grown, thinly sliced
Apples: Washington grown, grilled
Dressing: Roasted red pepper aioli
Sounded good enough so I ordered it. The food landed on the table and when the waiter asked "Need anything else" I automatically responded, "Ketchup and Mustard please". I grabbed the ketchup jar, opened the cap and started to pull apart the bun to load it up...but something stopped me. I pondered, "Someone put some thought into this burger, I should give it a shot as is".
Bite.
Heaven.
the burger needed nothing. I repeat, nothing. It was so good, I may very well be ruined forever...but I'll trudge on eating inferior burgers. The meat was beefy, moist and fantastic. The apples were so unexpectedly good and the red pepper aioli was a nice compliment that just underscored the overall burger.
On our 2nd visit of the trip, the special was gone. I plodded through a really good meal but thought of that burger the whole time and can't remember what I had. Ruined...
Oh yeah, tons of tasty brews. Cozy atmosphere. Good service. Full bar.
That burger...
sigh.
Think of an independent small scale TGIF and you have the Elk. They get kudos simply for being an independent restaurant in my book.
They are trendy, good food, kid friendly, outside seating. The black bean quesadilla is good along with a multitude of other entrees. Give it a try and you probably won't be disappointed.
Howdy Veggies & Carnies!
this is a laid-back pub with fantastic grub. We went there twice this past weekend. We ordered the 'Bean Burger and Corn Pasta Salad, it was delectable and meat-free. The have many micro beers on tap as well.
It was nice weather so we sat outside on the deck. It's in Brown's edition and it's a cozy view of the old homes in the neighborhood.
From I-90: Take the Maple Exit. Turn left on Second and drive until you see Rosauer's Grocery Store. Continue 3 blocks and turn right.
We'll definately be back for more!
We love the Elk! Â It's such a great place to go. Â It's great all year round but especially fun in the summer with the patio. Â
My favorite dishes are the BBQ Chicken Quesadilla, the Spinich salad with wontons and the gumbo. Â The gumbo is incredibly spicy so make sure you have enough water! Â The ravioli is also delicious. Â I don't think I've ever gotten a bad meal here.
It can get quite crowded, especially in the summer, so don't be too surprised if you have a little wait. Â The staff are very helpful but it seems to be light on staffing. Â I know we've had to flag down our servers more than a few times because they were so busy with their many other tables.
But I'd highly recommend this place to anyone. Â It's great!
