You might pass this local gem in RIchmond non descript, set back from the road. Cozy, rustic very nice bartender. Â REASONABLE prices! We have only eaten at the bar area so I cannot speak about the rest of the staff. Â Specials include prime, snail salad and quahog chowder (excellent!)
Our favorite: STUFFIES they are a must! we get them everytime we go!
After living in the area for the past eight years, and with few restaurants nearby, I was encouraged to see a new restaurant opening! Â We first ate at Ernie T's about two months ago after reading some good reviews online. Â The food was average pub fare, but it was good albeit nondescript. Â The waitress, on the other hand, was apathetic and "low energy." Â Kinda rough around the edges, if you will. Â We thought, well it is another restaurant besides the Wood River Inn. Â Tonight we went for our second meal and boy it was awful. Â We ordered the flounder fish and chips. Â It came quickly, but the portion was miniscule. Â Typically restaurants pile the french fries overflowing on the plate. Â There is no way that the flounder was fresh! Â It was mushy, thin and virtually tasteless! Â We each got three very small pieces. Â Just as we were leaving the man next to us was served fish and chips and his piece of fish was three times larger than ours! Â What's up with that? Â So, it's back to the Wood River Inn for us. Â We will not be giving Ernie T's another chance. Â AND, on the short drive home, my stomach started feeling very queasy, and by the time I got home I had to take 3 Tums. Â This is definitely not a good indication of fresh food or fresh frying oil. Â I would say, unless you're going to just watch a game and have a beer with friends, it's not a place to eat.
Review Source:I've lived in Richmond for the last 12 years and there have been at least 4 different, unsuccessful restaurants in the location that Ernie T's now inhabits. So when they opened, I grabbed a To Go menu. At first, I wasn't too impressed with the selection of items, as it appeared to be rather common pub food, so I figured that this place would probably become extinct, just like the previous places. But one night, after work, I was craving some Buffalo Wings and I stopped in here. The place was quiet and one of the owners was bartending. He was very friendly and while I was waiting for my wings, he poured some root beer barrel shots for a couple of other patrons and he offered one to me on the house. It made me feel very much welcomed and put me into a good frame of mind about the place. That feeling was then heightened when my plate of wings arrived from the kitchen. They were typical tasting Buffalo Wings, but these were the biggest and juiciest wings I've ever eaten in all my years of pub dining.
A couple of weeks later, I popped in for lunch and had the fried fish sandwich. I was told by the waitress that the owners pride themselves on serving the freshest seafood around and when my sandwich arrived, I could definitely agree to their proclamation. In my younger days, I ran a seafood market back in New Bedford, Massachusetts, so I'm well acquainted by what truly fresh seafood should look and taste like. When my wife and I want Fish and Chips, this is the place we go to now. Their French Fries have that Olde English quality to them and really compliment the fish well. When doused in Malt Vinegar, they rival any fries you could have anywhere else.
I've also had a Bacon Cheeseburger here, and there was an abundance of Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato on it, while the burger was cooked to the temperature I requested and it was delicious and juicy.
I'm hoping that this restaurant survives in this location, Richmond is not known for its plethora of good dining establishments, and for me, Ernie T's is a welcomed addition.
Update - For a place that calls itself a "Wee Friendly Pub", they sure don't know what the hell that means. I went here recently with my wife and it was a disaster.
First, we walk in and no one greets us. There was one waitress on the floor, and two tables with customers. The bar had a couple guys and the bartender. I stood at the hostess station for a moment, wondering if the waitress or bartender would acknowledge us. Nope. Finally a minute later the waitress - who was literally no more than 10 feet from us - comes over and seats us at a booth. She drops menus and disappears. And we wait. After at least 5 minutes without seeing the waitress (the dining room is very small and there were only two other tables) my wife and I decide that it would be better to sit at the bar. Now it gets really weird.
We walk the few steps from the booth over to the bar, where there were only two other people. I say hello to the bartender as we grab a couple seats. She looks over at me and seems surprised that I'm addressing her. She mumbles something that could have been interpreted as a greeting.
Does she come over, ask if we want a drink, menus, anything? No. She ignores us. She wasn't doing anything else at the time, like getting drinks for any of the other 6 people in the joint. Instead of communicating with us in any way, she was arranging glasses and whatever. I look at my wife and say "let's go". We got up, and left, and I will not go here again. Terrible, apathetic, unwelcoming, inept, cold, should be verbs in their motto - not "friendly".
All the waitress or bartender had to do was be oh I don't know, FRIENDLY, and smiled, told us they'd be right with us, something! Stay away - this place does not care about you.
Ernie T's "Wee Friendly Pub" is right off 95 South, exit 3B. Â Like, RIGHT OFF the exit. First left after the guardrail, blink and you might miss it. This cozy little bar has a sporty hometown feel. Friendly staff make you feel welcome the moment you enter. We were seated by a bright eyed waitress who was very knowledgeable about all the menu items and helped to recommend a few. I tried the bartender's signature raspberry chocolate martini. WORTH EVERY PENNY! It was delicious! We followed up with fried pickle chips, and I could end the review right here if I wanted. The batter was light and fluffy and rivaled some of the best I've had in Atlanta. I LOVED THEM!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! Â I also ordered a tenderloin steak sandwich, which boasted it was "the best". I don't believe I've had one better. I commend the chef since a tender tenderloin is not always an easy feat. It was pounded thin and had none of that gamey taste some tenderloin have. The onions were beautiful and translucent and the mushrooms were full of flavor. A perfectly constructed sandwich. The fries were, well, just fries and I didn't even need them after such a filling sandwich. And did I mention the pickle chips? I have visions of pregnant women journeying down to South County just for a basketful. I totally would.
All in all, good eats. A return trip is in the near future.
