The Fat Grass

I have driven past this restaurant several times in the past six months, and have always wanted to stop.  After reading about the Chef's background, I knew this would be better than anything in Corpus Christi (my destination) so here I am.

Wine list: if you love CA wine, then this is the place for you. There is maybe a handful of other wines on the list. The bartender informed me that the local regulars actually decided on the wine list via tasting and silent vote with the distributors- a sign that management is in tune with the market. Pricing reasonable. I ordered a dirty martini.

I ordered the tuna tartar to start, fish not as fresh as I would have expected, but definitely on track with other restaurants of this caliber. Lets face it, we are not at a sushi joint in LA. I am impressed in Bay City!  Tuna slightly sweet, glazed in teriyaki and lemongrass, and pairs nicely with accompanying goat cheese.

Let me say this- I am sitting at the bar, and there is a tremendous difference in service between the two bartenders. Christopher is amazing, while the other tried to turn me off from dishes because "he didn't like mushrooms."  That's no way to sell! C'mon!

I ended up settling in the sirloin for dinner. The highlight of the dish was definitely the sauce: almost candied tomatoes in a sweet, yet acidic steak sauce topped my 8 ounce beef, and I relished every bite. Just enough savory. The potatoes, mashed with sour cream and chives, needed salt. The green beans wrapped in bacon were very fresh. The steak itself, cooked well.

All in all, 5 stars because where else around here can you get this? Let alone Corpus, Victoria, or Galveston?

The nicest place to eat within 50 miles, the food is good and they have napkins that you don't throw away.  Anytime a contractor wants to take me out to lunch, I will be coming here.

Also, sweet potato fries!!!

What a good burger & fries. I had the BBQ burger and it was fabulous. We were the first ones in for lunch, but more patrons quickly followed. If it weren't so hot, we probably would have sat on the cute patio. Two thumbs up!
