I have driven past this restaurant several times in the past six months, and have always wanted to stop. Â After reading about the Chef's background, I knew this would be better than anything in Corpus Christi (my destination) so here I am.
Wine list: if you love CA wine, then this is the place for you. There is maybe a handful of other wines on the list. The bartender informed me that the local regulars actually decided on the wine list via tasting and silent vote with the distributors- a sign that management is in tune with the market. Pricing reasonable. I ordered a dirty martini.
I ordered the tuna tartar to start, fish not as fresh as I would have expected, but definitely on track with other restaurants of this caliber. Lets face it, we are not at a sushi joint in LA. I am impressed in Bay City! Â Tuna slightly sweet, glazed in teriyaki and lemongrass, and pairs nicely with accompanying goat cheese.
Let me say this- I am sitting at the bar, and there is a tremendous difference in service between the two bartenders. Christopher is amazing, while the other tried to turn me off from dishes because "he didn't like mushrooms." Â That's no way to sell! C'mon!
I ended up settling in the sirloin for dinner. The highlight of the dish was definitely the sauce: almost candied tomatoes in a sweet, yet acidic steak sauce topped my 8 ounce beef, and I relished every bite. Just enough savory. The potatoes, mashed with sour cream and chives, needed salt. The green beans wrapped in bacon were very fresh. The steak itself, cooked well.
All in all, 5 stars because where else around here can you get this? Let alone Corpus, Victoria, or Galveston?
Very nice place. I got the chicken fried venison steak which was delicious. Small portions but that's what i would expect from a restaurant like this (probably the only place in town with an actual chef.) That being said, i don't understand why restaurants give small portions of potatoes, which are incredibly cheap and easy to prepare. My meal probably consisted of the equivalent of 1 medium sized red skinned potato which you can get a 3 lb bag of for around 3 dollars in most places. I assume that's just what looks good on the plate, the presentation of the meal did look excellent.
If you want a great meal (for city prices...) I would highly recommend Fat Grass. If you're looking for cheap food or large portions go for one of the many tex mex spots around the area. You will not get the quality or the atmosphere at the tex mex spots but you will get larger portions.
This also seems like a fun place to grab some cocktails or wine. The bartenders were friendly and I didn't have to ask for a new chilled glass for my beer. Other reviewers didn't appreciate the service but I had a good experience.
There is not a lot in Bay City but if you want some really nice food this is your place.  They have outdoor seating that's very cozy and fresh.  They have a bar area for the average dinning expectations.  They have a fine dinning area with white table clothes, nice wines and excellent service.  So I would highly recommend this for all levels of  taste.  Enjoy it because it really is a nice experience on the cities town square.
Review Source:Out riding our motorcycles through the big, Texas countryside, we saw a billboard for The Fat Grass restaurant and bar. Liking the name, my wife and I decided to stop at this quaint restaurant on the small-town main square. The menu hanging in the window advertised good-sounding entrees such as chicken fried venison and an exquisite sounding artichoke chicken. Unfortunately, because it was Sunday, they only served brunch and burgers until 5:30pm. Shrugging our shoulders, we took a table on their cozy sun patio.
I know that tempos in small towns move more slowly than in the big city. However, service at The Fat Grass moves slower than the grass growing out back. We waited a full ten minutes before finally getting our drinks and placing our order. Only one table had guests do you can imagine our consternation at the glacial speed that our server Kayla showed.
On the bright side, they know how to make a spicy Bloody Mary. To ease that fire, though, be prepared to sip on unfiltered municipal water with a sour flavor not tempered by the wedge of lime squeezed into the glass.
Kayla managed to mess up my wife's order. I should have anticipated that since she did not write it down. Then, when my wife asked about the incorrect bun and toppings, Kayla managed to act offended. She took the plate away and returned four minutes later with the updated and correct food.
Regarding the food, the French Fries are absolutely amazing. That's where the good review of the food ends.
My wife's burger, ordered medium well, came out well on the outside and raw on the inside. My burger suffered the same rawness. Kayla managed to make two trips to the table while my glass sat empty.
Perhaps we came on the wrong day or the wrong time because the other reviews for this restaurant do not reflect our experiences at The Fat Grass. We'll never return and negatively review the restaurant to our family and friends.
Easily the best restaurant/bar in Bay City. Â But there was truly no competition.
Even so, The Fat Grass is a pretty good restaurant. Â It would not stand up to competition in a larger market because it does not truly deliver the quality of service and food for the price.
But it is a nice place, with good atmosphere, and it is so much better than all other options that you really can't complain too much.
What a horrendous experience my family and I had at Fat Grass one Sunday afternoon. We arrived around 1 and all decided to order from the brunch buffet. After the server described everything to us, it sounded like a good deal. Salad, tilapia with crab, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, omelets, waffles, biscuits, fruit etc.. For $11.99. The restaurant was not that busy and we were able to hop up and be first in line at the buffet. Immediately we noticed that the salad bowl was almost completely empty. I decided to wait for someone to refill it. That never happened. After my family finished their garden salad we all got into the main brunch line. The staff serves the guests. He opened the first buffet tray and  showed us an empty container with scraps of chicken. The young boy said more was on the way. We didn't think twice and waited for him to show us the next food option. He opened the lid and again, the Tilapia was completely out with one dried up little piece stuck on the corner. He apologized and then opened up the next lid and shockingly the green beans were completely empty. We all went to sit down to wait on the food that was currently nonexistent. My mom went to order a waffle while we waited. In the mean time at least 7 college aged students just stood around the buffet table doing nothing while that same Caesar salad bowl sat empty as well as the fruit bowl. Needless to say after almost waiting 20 minutes and NOTHING had still come out we decided to ask for a manager and their response was "we'll, we don't have a manger, but we have a chef." At that instant we stood up and left. Moral of this story, None of us are really sure if the brunch is any good or not because 80 percent of what they were offering was out. Maybe if a manager was present and not  just a chef, they would have told the lost looking little waiters and waitresses to refill the most simplest of things such as the salad and fruit bowl.  We Don't plan on going back anytime soon because I refuse to put up with ignorant places and their blatant disregard for paying guests.
Review Source:If you have to be in the Bay City area for whatever reason and you like the bar scene, then this place will make you very happy. If you don't prefer the bar, they have a semi-fancy-schmansy room for the quiet evening dining. Or they have some casual outdoor seating as well.
This is probably the only note worthy bar here in town. And I'm glad I accidentally drove right by and noticed the sign. And they have a happy hour too.
I came in on a Sunday afternoon and they had happy hour all night. $2 domestic drafts, $3 premium drafts and $4 wells.
I made a dinner out of it too. They offer prime rib at $2 an ounce. Comes with two sides. So I ordered some fries and rice. They accidentally got my order wrong by giving me some green beans instead of the fries, but they were awesome in that they corrected it right away. The prime rib was pretty good too. Nice and juicy too.
I also ordered some asparagus, southern fried style. This wasn't something I was used to, so I wasn't a big fan of it. The complementary bread was warm and the butter that accompanied it was salty and perfect.
The staff were super friendly too. Granted, I was one of only a few patrons that night. This is a good bar with some tv's and I enjoyed my time here. If I ever come back here in the Bay City area...for whatever reason, this would be an absolute stop.
