It doesn't get much better than the Fernwood Tavern in Big Sur.
Stay on top of their music calendar, because they often host a plethora of fantastic music acts or intimate festivals throughout the year.
The slew of regulars and diverse visitors that wander in here - all with big warm smiles - is reason enough to check out the Fernwood Tavern.
Trust.
We wandered in on a road trip and woo-wee were we pleased. I second comments about the atmosphere being inviting and warm. There are board games or books available, the tv is not overwhelming but it is available. Their drink selection is terrific....and their food, even better! I wish we had more time to try a wider selection of items but for our meal we split their hummus, rueben, and soup of the day. Everything was excellent!
Review Source:I can't say enough good things about this place.
The atmosphere pulls you in and welcomes you instantly. The bartenders are ALL cool. The drinks are great, and Yes, they will patiently make you a most Excellent Bloody Mary.
The food is Delicious. I LOVE their burger. My next plan is to go back for the " Natchos as big as your head". The last time I went, I had a great conversation with the kitchen manager, who is a wonderful human being. I'm happy to know that the food I eat there is coming from such good people.
The only drawback is that I have to drive 45 minutes to GET to Fernwood.
Makes me want to move to Big Sur.
Big Sur vacations are all about balance: sweaty hikes and romantic sunsets; car-camping and gourmet dinners; hitchhikers and Range Rovers. And staying at the Fernwood Resort offers exactly this kind of yin & yang.
Just up the hill from their riverside campground (there's a wooden staircase that takes you from your tented residence to the taverns back door), the Fernwood Tavern is the closest thing to "nightlife" you'll find along Hwy 1, unless you do the midnight hike up to Sykes Hot Springs, which will probably be on my bucket list forever. On Fridays they have trivia night, hosting a curious assortment of vocal locals and entertainment-hungry tourists. Although the trivia questions were some of the most difficult/ obscure I've ever heard, I definitely recommend stopping in for the people watching and comfy ranch-style leather couches. On Saturdays they have live music (or maybe we just got lucky on this particular Saturday?), garnering another lively crowd. The bartenders are pretty gruff, so try to stay under the radar and don't ask for a Cosmo or Apple-tini.
We had dinner here one night - good, hearty pub grub with a healthy-hippie twist. I had a giant spinach & house-smoked turkey salad (overdressed, but the greens were much needed), and my camping partner had their burger: thick, gourmet, and garnished with all the goods: avocado, blue cheese, carmelized onions, AND a side of tater tots. A magnificent, manly meal compared to the non-perishable hiking snacks we'd gotten accustomed to. They have a perfect assortment of local beer and wines, taking your camping experience to new luxurious heights.
We will probably always stay at Fernwood during our Big Sur adventures, and knowing the tavern is just steps away and full of lively characters and entertainment, really tips the scales in their favor.
Went for a hike in Big Sur, and stopped by for a beer. The "Nachos as Big as Your Head" sounded good, so I got a half order, which was actually as big as my head anyway. These things were delicious--homemade chips, beans, salsa, guacamole, and roasted veggies (they also have meat options). Halfway through my nachos, I found myself chewing on a piece of paper.. appetite gone. I brought this to the attention of the bartender, who assessed the situation and apologized. Not only did he not charge me for the food, but he comped my beer as well. Why am I giving the Fernwood 4 stars? Because the food was excellent, and I know that mistakes happen. On top of that, the way the mistake was handled truly impressed me. I'd give this place another chance in a heartbeat.
Review Source:Hands down THE BEST burger in Big Sur, I don't care WTF people say otherwise.
Patio dining in the Redwoods, and the friendliest people in Big Sur.. Kick ass drinks and a solid beer selection, close to the road and easy to get into to. I really miss this place when I am gone, and can't wait to come back. Local people that adorn the place are a staple of Fernwood, and it never fails that the crowd that frequents the Inn portion of Fernwood, fall right in with the rest of us, and chill the hell out!
If it's local digs you crave with that genuine Big Sur attitude, be prepared to be pleased. If you want to show off your brand new A6, and your cashmere sweater, please go to Nepenthe, we will all thank you..This place is as local as it gets, and if you insist on talking all about where you are from, unless you live in Big Sur, I highly suggest taking a sip of that delicious beer and re-thinking it. Fernwood is way too mellow and laid back, where nobody judges OR cares where you are from. So relax a bit and please stop talking, I'm trying to hear the wind in the trees!
