Ordered take out. See photos
Pear salad with buffalo chicken.
The portion size was a little lite one the amount of spinach presented.
He chicken was good. Pan cooked instead of typical fried chicken.
They went a little heavy on the raspberry vinaigrette but the idea of that chicken and that salad was no the best combo on my part.
The chop salad was ordered the same way. Larger portion, but cheaper salad.
I would order it again
One of our favorite places to eat in the state. Â Stopped in for lunch today and enjoyed another superb meal. Â We were seated in front of the open kitchen area. Â The booths in that area are cozy, lighting is slightly dark, very nice setting to enjoy a meal. Â The bread basket that arrived soon after us being seated was filled with fresh & tasty breads. Â The raisin bread was our favorite.
We started off with 10 of the Coal-Fire Brick Oven Wings (Honey Hot flavor). Â We both agree, these are the BEST wings we have ever eaten. Â If you are a fan of First & Last, you really need to try their wings.
My gf ordered a small Prosciutto pizza -- fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil, & prosciutto. Â Delicious, she loved it -- the fresh basil & tomato sauce was so fresh tasting, really made this pizza outstanding. Â I had a cheddar burger w/ bacon -- cooked perfectly, enjoyed it quite a bit.
We got two cannoli's to go. We ate them in the evening, they were still extremely tasty even after being in the fridge all afternoon. Â Also, our server Josie was nice and friendly. Â Looking forward to our next visit to First & Last Tavern. Â It's obviously a well run & well-managed place, everything always seems to be done right there.
Don't be fooled by the name! First&Last is an Italian restaurant with lots of history. Â The portions are big, and pasta is good! We were waited on and served quickly by a very friendly and helpful waitress. Â If you get a chance, sit outside! Very peaceful with lots of room and not very busy at all even for a weekend.
Review Source:super experience here. not sure what to expect when we entered. very courteous staff and food was interesting and very good. we loved the bakery on site. we  bought a loaf of raisin bread to take with us. it was unbelievably good. i'd go back just for that. service was fast and servers friendly and efficient.
Review Source:My family and I have visited First & Last frequently, but our recent visit will be the last for a while.  The food was decent as usual. However the service was horrible. We ate in the bar area and had to wait a significant amount of time for everything from placing our order to getting food wrapped up when we were finished. It was later in the evening and not very busy  When we received our bill there was a small discrepancy in a price of a meal. We pointed it out and were told that old menus were still being used.  As someone who has considerable experience in customer service this was inexcusable and easy to fix - simply take the menus out if circulation. The staff acted as if making the correction on our bill was a horrible thing to expect. Additionally the poor service was made worse by the fact that the server seemed more interested in the wishes of the manager and his family, than those of paying customers.
Review Source:I moved to Tennessee a couple of years ago and each time I travel home I return to First & Last. Â Irene always remembers my drink and makes it perfectly. Â So when I made my most recent trip "home" in August, Irene was off the day I got together with old friends at the bar. Â No worries, the "newbie" did very credible job! Â I simply love this place for it's friendliness and consistency. Â The chopped salad with blue cheese is a simple dish, but it could be overdressed if done wrong. Â It never is. Â Always perfect. Â Also love the simple Pizza Margharita and the risotto with scallops. Â I am looking forward to returning during the holidays. Â Hope Irene is on deck! Â Cheers!
Review Source:We had my sister's rehearsal dinner here. Simple expectations..pizza's and soda for twenty three dollars and some change per person in one of their event rooms. My sister had a email confirming that soda was included months ago. Great! We had a smaller party..18 people. When we arrived, we were told soda was not included when asked why tabs were being started for soda. That is ok..we will deal with it after dinner.
We noticed seating for over 30+ people and chairs just scattered everywhere..like they did not have time to set up. We sat down to start eating bread and salad in a very disorganized manner around the room. Suddenly the manager came out to the future married couple and started raising his voice at them...about soda! SODA folks! He also mentioned that he would not make the pizza if they pushed the soda issue. If this manager had any business manners in him, he would understand that this is a very memorable evening..threating not to make pizzas is going a little too far for trying to prove a point..what the heck happened to customer service? "I'm not making your pizza's if you press this issue of soda!" What is that?
My sister mentioned that soda was included in the price that they agreed upon and he would not honor it. Including or not..who cares. My point is..this is a very special moment in my sisters life and why come out in the middle of my sisters dinner and confront her and then proceed to walk away..ignoring her..potentially holding her pizza hostage? His last words to her is that I don't have to listen to this anymore as she asked about the details of booking a party. How is pizza twenty three dollars and change per person with no soda... Wow. We can buy a whole pizza and split with three people for under 20 dollars... We were ripped off.
I hardly ever write a negative review..(esp to a small business), but the manager was just rude and acts like he was raised in a dog kennel.
I will always believe this..a manager that does not take care of his customers, does not take care of this employees, and does not take care of his restaurant. It shows.
My most recent trip was to the Avon, CT location. Â The deck was clean, fun, and enjoyable for our dining experience. Â The wait staff did a great job and tolerated my two young nephews well. Â The food was typical for the chain. Â Overall, the food is average to above average. Â You won't be disappointed by a date or quick bite out. Â It's a nice restaurant in a historic downtown Avon home/building. Â Â Go for it.
Review Source:I can't say enough good things about this location and restaurant.
I have been several times, even for a baby shower party! Never once was I disappointed. I tend to get the chicken sandwich with roasted veggies which is incredible. Of course the pizza is always a great choice as well :) Go here for a great atmosphere with several different rooms and styles in each room, and of course great food!
I have been here twice. The first time, I ordered a clam sauce pasta, and the second time I ordered a dish that was essentially the same but contained a variety of seafood, including calimari, scallops, and oysters. The portions are huge. The pasta was very good both times. The service is friendly. The bread is not very good though. My friend ordered a pepperoni pizza. I tried some, and it was not good. Very very very greasy.
I signed up for a newsletter from the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised with a 15% off discount.
Like an old comfortable sweatshirt, First and Last provides familiarity, a great deal of satisfaction, and maximum comfort. We arrived at 6:30 on Saturday night (w/o reservations) and the massive restaurant was already packed. We were pleasantly surprised to see our anticipated 30-minute wait turn into just ten minutes. Our pleasant server was right over to get our drink orders, so we complied with a Black and Blue (Guiness and Blue Moon) $5, a Sam $5, and an Amstel Lite $4.50. A bread basket quickly arrived, and this was no ordinary bread basket. We've been to F&L many times over the years, and we have become insane fans of their focaccio bread. Our bread basket was filled with dozens of squares of these little slices of heaven- nice thin bread chock full with garlic and spices and all kinds of rustic goodness.
We started off with an antipasto order for the table- a nice sized salad of Italian dressed lettuce with a few grape tomatoes, roasted peppers, hunks of cheese, egg slices, olives, salami cones, a scoop of chick peas, and rolled up slices of ham. This was a steal at $8.50.
Our entrees were Zuppa di Clams ($13.75) and a diiner salad, Penne a la vodka with sausage ($16.95), and a small meatball pizza ($11.25). I had the Zuppa- it was a large portion of sweet clams in a delicious red sauce (I had the choice of red or white) served with a nice slab of garlic bread for mop up duty. My dinner companions spoke highly of their food. We have had take-out pizza from F&L about 25 times, and it always good- nice thin crust, delicious meatballs, and yummy sauce. Dinner, and 4 beers came to $71 and we ended up carting half of the food home with us.
The only hiccup was my dinner salad didnt have the dressing on the side, as I asked for. Our attentive server was terrific, she checked on us multiple times but never became obtrusive. All in all, it was a solid dinner from a very reliable restaurant.
Always reliable food. It tends to get busy at peak hours, so expect a wait. The steak sandwich is yummy and pasta dishes are equally good. My only complaint is that no matter when I go, they always seat me across from the kitchen and waitstaff prep station. It doesn't make for the most relaxing location. I think they should only put people there when there are no other available seats.
Review Source:I have been going here regularly for over ten years. It used to be great. Now, it's just okay. In the past two years I have been disappointed by stale bread, less than fresh vegetables, and sloppy cooking. The pizza is still great but everything else is lacking in the quality I used to find here.
Review Source:In the era of new Italian restaurants, this one deserves a second look. Â I've been disappointed with Da Capo the last few times I visited and wanted something family friendly (where you can take the parents and the kids too).
The pizza is quite good. Pepperoni is a very flavorful kind. Highly recommended. They did a nice job with a bacon pizza and even a buffalo chicken pizza (with nice big pieces of fresh chicken). Â
The salads are also pretty big and the caesar salad had a good amount of cheese to keep it interesting. Â The pub menu (featuring burgers) is a good find too.
It's not without its flaws. The service brought out the meals promptly but forget to bring the house salad. Refills on water glasses were made on request, but it took a while sometimes to find the waitress. Â The salad that DID arrive, arrived only 2 minutes before the pizza instead of as an appetizer. Â And the risotto dish needed some salt and cheese to make it good. Â
But overall, every time I'm here I wonder why I don't think of this place more often.
By the way, this place is MUCH bigger than it looks from the outside. Can host big parties and we've never had to wait for a table.
I have been there a lot for happy hours and dinners with friends, and somehow I forgot to mention this lovely Italian restaurant. When at the bar I found their drinks generous and priced fairly. Our bartender each time was efficient and funny no matter how many people were there. The place has an"Early American" look on RT 44. The decor offers a pleasant change from some of the new chain restaurants and their are rooms for dining all over the place. I liked the raw oysters. Everyone tells us that their pizza is the best around. Sadly, I would have to disagree. It's good, but not the best. Even though I am a fan of thick crust pizza, I have had better. Salads were good and freshly made
Each time I have been there for dinner, the place was packed and, our server checked in on us often and was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. That is a must and it was always appreciated and rewarded. One of my friends ordered a pepperoni pizza and told me to try a slice. I passed, but he insisted that I try their imported pepperoni. I took a piece and I have to admit that it was pretty good, but I don't usually order meat pizzas. If you like meat pizzas, give it a shot.
The real stand-out at First and Last is their pasta. Very good and served properly.
We typically take pains to avoid dining out in Avon, Simsbury and Canton. The area is chock full of places serving mediocre food in very handsome surroundings to miserable, demanding people.
First & Last is a notable exception to the rule. The food was so wonderful on our first recent visit we couldn't wait to go back.
Cocktails are generous and priced fairly. Our bartender was extremely efficient while being extremely cheerful (and funny) despite at one point serving a bar that was standing-room-only.
The place is very, very charming. The decor is a nice fresh change from the typical "Early American" look. The restaurant is very, very clean despite being very busy. And the place is huge. I'd hazard a guess if one's not happy with one corner there're plenty of other places to be seated.
After our order was taken, the nicest little basket of pizza bread with herbs was placed on the table. It was absolutely wonderful -- just what the dr. ordered with our beverages -- and combined the delights of good bread and an herbed olive oil dipping sauce without having to dunk and dribble oil...
Salad sauces were very good and obviously house-made.
Mind you, even though the place was absolutely throbbing with business, our server checked on us often and was extremely friendly without being cloyingly so. Every single person we interacted with was professional and pleasant.
Pizza was good, even for the higher-than-pizza-parlor price. I'll forgive them for making it a little thicker-in-the-crust than I'd have liked.
The real stand-out was a simple plate of pasta with meatballs (side salad on the same plate - we haven't seen that in many years). The sauce had, for lack of a better word, "umami." That certain something that pops in one's mouth and is exciting and, well, just delicious. The meatballs were perfectly seasoned and the whole thing was a peak experience. I don't think I'll order anything else the next time(s) I venture here.
Did I mention the service was really, really good?
The wonderful attitude of the people who work here apparently affected the crowd positively. It seemed that the vast majority of patrons here were having a wonderful time and were very, very happy. The lady who did a little spinning pose around the front door complaining about having to "wait forever" for her pizza had only been waiting five minutes. She made a fool of herself and in doing so provided us with some free entertainment. All the right people eat here. Even the small children were quite well behaved without exception.
Go here. Expect not to find a parking space for a while, but one will open up when a take-out customer departs, fear not. Expect to wait a moment for a table (spend the time at the bar and you won't regret it). And expect a very, very nice Italian-American dining experience.
Everyone said the pizza is the best but I didn't think it was all that. Instead I loved my wings (spicy!!) & special garden salad.
Volume was huge, especially pasta is large enough for two, so be aware.
Servie was top notch, though the front service suxed. Someone cut us off and got a table and didn't do anything about it. Jeez.
I'd say everything but pizza are recommended.
This is a really solid, family friendly restaurant. Â The pizzas and paninis are always solid lunch fare and you've got love a place that simply offers a spaghetti and meatball plate. Â Recently renovated bar area at Avon location makes this place even better.
Bread basket is great too.
I've eaten at a few of the locations and the food is just ok. Â Service was fine, bread looked really good but was just ok as well. Â Fairly inexpensive, but limit your expectations to good Italian pub food and you'll have a great time. Â I would say the pizza is being totally overrated here by the rest of the reviewers. Â Stick to pasta dishes.
Review Source:Based on the other reviews, had high expectations. Greatly disappointed
Pros- great bread, good staff
Cons -- overcooked pasta, tasteless meatballs and sauce--bland bland blah! Relatively overpriced.
Probably my first time there will be my last--but if I am there again, will limit myself to the pizza which others haver recommended.
I've been here many, many times. Whether you're sitting in the bar, outside on their patio or in their comfortable dinning room, you won't be disappointed. Sitting in the bar area, order something from the raw bar before your meals. The raw oysters are wonderful! This is the only restaurant that I have discovered in our area serving imported pepperoni on their pizza. It's a huge difference. Everyone else just seems so ordinary. Their meals are truly authentic and portions large enough for you to take something home. The bar is fully stocked with some great top shelf spirits as well as a great selection of draft beer. Yes, Guinness is poured on a regular basis too.
I love the bread bowl that's served prior to the meal, the pizzas are just the best ever, and the meals truly authentic. Â This is a win, win, win.
Get your sneakers on and grab a bottle of water, because it feels like a 20-minute walk by the time you sit down at your table!
Great Italian food with huuuuge portions. Â You won't be able to finish. Â Don't even try. Â And anything here is good. Â This is a great place to visit on a weekend or to grab take-out from after work. Â It's fun to mix it up between pasta dishes and the pizzas.
Hint: Try the raisin bread on Friday nights!
Last night on a whim my girlfriend and I decided to just randomly stop at First and Last Tavern. A co-worker of mine goes to it very often and talks highly of it so I figured I would give it a try.
The place is obviously very old and that definitely gives the place a very cool vibe. The building is set up very long and narrow so it felt like we were walking forever to get to our table. As we walked to our seats we walked past the nice looking outdoor seating area, but opted to stay inside. When we finally did we sat down and admired the atmosphere. There were some pretty cool old photos along the wall, including one of the Yankees.
There were a number of options that sounded pretty good. I decided to go with the pizza which I was very pleased with. Most of the prices I thought seemed pretty high. Judging by the portion sizes I saw for most people, they are not worth the price they charge. I am glad I decided to go with the pizza because it was more than I was able to eat, for a small, but it was only $9.
Overall it was a pretty good dining experience and I would probably go back if driving by again.
