I arrived in Ketchikan fairly late on a Friday night.  The cruise ships had left and the town was "rolling up the sidewalks".  Fish Pirates was still open so I stopped in for a beer and a bite.  The place was fine, but fairly "generic" and average.  Prices were higher than what I thought it might be worth, but I suppose that's the reality in a SE AK town - especially in a place that makes its living off of the captive cruise ship trade.

Fine if you're looking for this sort of joint, but nothing of special noteworthiness...

This place is definitely open and extremely busy when we were there on July 9 or 10th (time blends on a cruise) because the cruise ships really pack in the people.
Our server was rather harried when she sat us and said "I'm really busy, I'll be with you just as soon as I can".
My wife replied "No problem, I can see you're swamped. Take your time" - we were in no hurry and you'd be surprised how nice a server can be when you treat them like people instead of indentured servants.
Our server came back all smiles and really friendly, chatted with us a bit, took our orders and was off. Such a nice lady.
We both had the halibut fish and chips and beers, and it hit the spot just fine.
There was an older gentleman with a big white mustache and even bigger cowboy hat, playing guitar and singing, and you'd have sworn it was Johnny Cash. He had such a warm, rich voice. Quite a talented musician.
Overall a wondeful time and I wish we lived a lot closer so we could go here more often.

This place was horrible as a dining experience. If u want beer and chili cheese fries you'll be good to go. If you want more than that I wouldn't bother. The pizza was decent but my friends "halibut" taco was leftover fins and lips at best and they charged them $16 for it after not cooking it as ordered. Then they decided it would be a good idea to fire up a saw and go to town on the bar during prime dinner hour. Even yelling i couldn't hear somebody 2 feet away. Do yourself a favor and don't eat there.

If you are a tourist and you want a memorable, decent meal DO NOT go to this place. If you are a local, you should know better. Fish tacos are halibut material pressed into a party and deep fried. Even that was dried out. Absolutely terrible, and it was $17 dollars. To top it all off, they were running a sawzall during the meal and NO ONE working there seemed to think this was a bad idea. DO NOT GO THERE. Ever.

I don't know why it says "CLOSED" on the heading. They were open last week when we were in town.

First off, this is one of the few locally owned restaurants left in the downtown area... the cruise lines have bought out much of the downtown businesses in order to give their passengers a more "authentic" experience. At the same time the cruise lines capture more of the tourists money in the process instead of the locals. The real Ketchikan is rapidly disappearing!

We were in town for the week, and this was one of the better stops we made. We both had the clam chowder sourdough bowls, which were good (not excellent, but "good"). Service was kind of frantic even though it wasn't particularly busy at lunch time. Total bill was about $20, which I guess is reasonable.

Don't ask me why, but I didn't have any of the crab dishes which this town is famous for. Shame on me!

In summary, the food is pretty good, the prices are pretty reasonable and you'll be supporting a locally owned business and not the cruise lines.

If you want slow service and warm mediocre chowder, then this is a place for you. Even the $3.50 sourdough bread is a disappointment. Oh, the beer was good!

For lunch we had the fried calamari which was actually quite good - not greasy and very tender. I had a cup of the clam chowder which was New England style. It was tasty but it could have been served a lot warmer. For the main course I had a one pound serving of king crab with corn on the cob and potatoes which was very satisfying but not the best I have ever had.

As mentioned in another review the name has been changed to the Fish Pirate's Saloon.

Now known as the Fish Pirate's Saloon. The beer on tap was Alaskan and the stout was great.  Not sure who in the world thought it was a good idea to have the really bad singer/piano player start up in the middle of the world cup football (soccer) FINAL.  If the looks from the Aussies at the bar could kill the singer/player would have been dead and buried.

I'm just a fan of these sorts of place.

Grabbed a quick bite to eat here and a beer sampler before heading back to our boat.

Got the calamari and the clam chowder. They were both pretty good, but the sauce that came with calamari wasn't that great.

The Alaskan beer sampler was tasty and it comes with a free pint glass for about $10. Not too bad.

If I lived in the area I'd definitely stop by a lot more often.

Eh.  We grabbed a bite to eat here on the recommendation of a local, but I wouldn't return.  Steamer's is your typical tourist restaurant: a big, airy place with walls covered in "local Alaska stuff", jammed packed with tables and staffed with servers who really just wants to turn your table over as soon as you sit down.  In fact, if you could just sit down, pay, and leave (without actually eating) that would be best.

We stood in the doorway for a while trying to spy an open table and finally were led to a second-tier area near the bar, where we were forgotten by our server.  We had to walk back to the entrance to grab some menus.  GT had a beer - one great thing about Alaska is the number of local beers on tap.  The food was forgettable.  The other patrons were all fresh off the boat (the cruise ships dock outside, marring the reportedly nice views (we weren't seated anywhere near a window)).  The place was noisy, the televisions were on...

Really, if you've seen one pier restaurant in any given city in the U.S., you've seen them all.

Just had lunch there yesterday on a fuel stop on our way to Anchorage. Had the Alaskan cod fish and chips. Yes it's a simple meal but the fish was excellent, light and flaky - not overwhelmed by the batter. Service, well kinda slow but seems kinda typical for these laid-back resort areas. . .
