We were pleasantly surprised by how good Fitzgerald's was. The service couldn't have been better- we were acknowledged as soon as we walked in the door and they were attentive and  friendly. The food was great. Perfectly fried (and not at all greasy) seafood, the Brunswick stew was awesome and the desserts (homemade, thank you very much!) were out of this world! We will definitely be going back.
Review Source:Clean, bright, good service. Server was Ajee and she did a really good job. Friendly greeting. Â Food is served on paper plates but is very good for fried seafood. Homemade desserts are excellent. Â Try the sweet potato pie. Good tea. Â Pleasantly quiet atmosphere. Worth the drive from the usual restaurants on the Capitol blvd restaurant row.
Review Source:Many neighbors had recommended Fitzgerald's and we decided to go for dinner. Â There were tables available even though the restaurant was over half full. Â When we went to sit a booth towards the front of the restaurant, a waitress recommended that we sit towards the back so we wouldn't get the draft of when the door was open (it was freezing rain). Â Shortly after we sat down, we were given a basket of hush puppies and drink orders were taken. Â My husband and I had tea, and they gave us a pitcher so we could refill ourselves.
Our youngest ate most of the hushpuppies and the waitress offered to get us more. Â They had to prepare more hush puppies, but when they came out they were nice and hot. Â My husband and I had the flounder. Â He had a baked potato that he said was good but it was cold. Â He really enjoyed to brunswick stew. Â I had french fries and green beans and both were good. Â The kids had chicken fingers and fries and a hot dog (which seems overcooked to me but the kid was happy so it was all good).
We had a few waitresses ask us if we needed anything. They were really attentive and even told us how the term hush puppy came to be. Â When we asked for refills for the kids, they were prompt. Â
It was good and we will return.
I'm going to round up to 4 stars on this one because I'm glad to have a Calabash seafood place in Rolesville. Â
My experiences though have been almost exactly the same as Leesa's. Â The service, while friendly, is not very attentive or intuitive. My experiences each time have been consistently as she described.
If you want something, you're going to _have_ to ask for it. This goes for both dine in and carry out (I had a to-go order and got no spoon for the brunswick stew or no sauces for the seafood.)
I've had the clams, scallops, and shrimp and all are really good. I have to say that the brunswick stew though is amazing. The hushpuppies are also excellent and they give you a good amount!
For dinner they offer both a large and small plate (little cheaper) which is nice. For me, the small plate (i get the 'pick 2' combo) was plenty ($10.50). Â Only complaint for me is that they serve crinkle cut fries which I detest! Â Dinner will run you $9 - $11 a plate which comes with two sides.
Also as Leesa said, don't go expecting to be able to order any other type of seafood besides deep fried. There's no broiled option. Â They do have bbq sandwich, fried chicken as alternative options to the Calabash style seafood.
All and all it's a decent place I'm happy to have the option to eat at in my neighborhood.
I guess if you like fried seafood this is a spot to put on the list. Â It was okay - not out of this world but at the same time not the worst. Â
Unlike the previous reviewer we chose to eat inside and had a much different experience. Â The service was not good at all! Â We waited for over 20 mins before being acknowledged. Â Then we had to repeat our drink order 4 times to the server (3 sweet teas) and the drinks were forgotten twice on visits to the table. Â We noticed that we were not the only ones in the restaurant having the same issues with service. Â There seemed to be two servers working and a guy behind the counter who appeared to do nothing but watch the chaos. Â
My family had Fried Catfish, Fried Flounder, Fried Shrimp and Brunswick Stew. Â Again, all were cooked fine and tasted fine - it just wasn't anything to jump up and down about and really recommend. Â Will we go back? Â Highly doubtful.
As to the service - it was a Wednesday early evening so we can't contribute the poor service to a busy Friday night or another normally busy time.
This unreviewed Calabash style seafood restaurant seemed mighty lonely and in critical need of a visit. Once again, I took one for the team.
As part of my selfless sacrifice, I rolled up to the scene or said differently, I parked in front of Fitzgerald's. At around 4:30 on a weekday afternoon, the joint was empty except for 3 tables.
There are 2 front doors with one directing you to use the other door on the left. When I approached the front left door, I saw a small sign directing customers to the Take Out service on the side of the building. I followed , opened the door and felt rather foolish since there is not a separate dedicated Take Out area. Is this a Calabash style seafood restaurant tradition??
The Fish story: once inside the brightly lit, new, clean establishment I received a very nice greeting,( this makes or breaks a restaurant in my book ) confirmed they take credit cards and perused their menu. Fitzgerald's also has a handwritten menu board with daily selections. Had I decided to dine in, they have plenty of tables and some booths.
Their menu is simple: Lunch Fried platters; Dinner fried platters in small and large portions; sandwiches; A la carte and senior and kid's menus. I was there for the oysters in the form of an Oyster burger. Coleslaw could be had on the sandwich or on the side. Just put it on my Oyster burger, please. Fries accompany all of their sandwiches, but I was pleased when I was informed fries could be exchanged for  a variety of vegetables or Brunswick stew. Why yes, I would like the Brunswick stew!  For $1.50, please add a dozen hushpuppies. Â
I sat down and waited less than 10 minutes for my food to emerge from the kitchen. It looked like a Styrofoam party which was then placed in a plastic bag.
Once inside my car, my olfactory lobe communicated with my whole body and I involuntarily pulled into a Food Lion parking lot. I snapped a few pictures and freed an oyster from the Oyster burger. It had an attractive golden brown color, a gentle crispiness noticeable to the touch and gave my mouth satisfying textural messages. The taste of the exterior was properly seasoned, neither bland or overly enhanced . Then a very clean oyster flavor gently built against my tongue and the smooth moist texture was satisfyingly delicious. The coleslaw complimented the hamburger bun and oysters perfectly. This coleslaw was shredded not diced to a virtual puree. A mild vinegar tone balanced the notes of sweetness in a cool crunchy fresh medley contrasting the hot fried oysters. Zen on a bun.
The 8 oz cup of Brunswick stew was thick and rich with pulled pork and some fresh vegetables. No spoon was needed as the thick meat stew moved gently from the cup to mouth as if by command.
Why did I order one dozen hushpuppies?? I did not know the simple meal would be so delicious and I like to use this item as a standard measure for comparison. These were finger shaped versus rolled compact ball shaped hushpuppies. This thinner style cooks faster and allows less time in the fryer to develop a serious taste. These were good but not needed. I forgive you, Fitzgerald's. Thanks for the otherwise great meal.
May you have a Blessed Christmas.
