I really enjoyed my dinner at Freddy Valentine's. The restaurant in located in an old bank building from 1900. The bar area is situated where the lobby once stood and the dining room is in the old vault. The beer selection is fantastic. The menu is diverse and my meal was made from mostly local ingredients and was very tasty. Overall, FV's is a unique experience in this part of Wisconsin. There were some issues with the service - forgetting to bring/refill water, not offering glasses for beverages, etc. These were minimal compared with the overall experience though.
Review Source:Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Â The interior trim is very well done to the period of the building and lends a great atmosphere for dining and sitting at the bar. Â The food was very good. Â There is obvious skill and experience in the kitchen. Â The service was great. Â We had to wait about a half hour but we were updated regularly on the status and were able to sit at the bar and have a beer. Â The waitress service was good as well. Â There are many craft beers to choose from, too. Â This is a great place for families, groups or couples. Â This out does most restaurants in bigger cities.
Review Source:Freddy Valentine's is amazing. Â I've had dinner here 3 times now and each time has been superb. Â The food and staff are amazing. Â If you live in south western Wisconsin, Go!!! Â Even if you live in or around Madison, make the trip to eat here!! It's that good!! Also, I believe all or at least the majority of the food they make is made with local ingredients!
Review Source:Updating, as I recently enjoyed a great dinner here. The salmon pot pie is great. Someone else described it well on here, with the phyllo wedge being served on the side. Taste was outstanding and the salmon was perfectly seasoned and juicy. Friends had the veggie enchilladas, and specials of pork chop and crawfish etouffee. The pork chop sounded like the standout of the night. Only two downsides were a well done bottom on the biscuit (which was otherwise great) and a little slow service getting our check. I can easily forgive those. It was otherwise good service and we very much enjoyed our meal. I really hope this place makes it. Judging by the busy weekends in the dead of winter, it's going to be the "go to" spot for summer APT dining and I expect we'll see it get some great press.
Also, they have Founder's Breakfast Stout on tap, which I can't get anywhere else nearby, so I love them for that alone.
Have eaten many lunches here-excellent burgers- and fries -creative specials--prompt table service.
Have always enjoyed food and sampling beers. On two occasions, owner has encouraged a "chocolate" beer as a popular dark ale. In fact, have overheard him pitching this brand to nearly every table--.on multiple visits--for some reason, even though menu is full of choices.  Took one sip --did not care for it at all, too strong. Ordered something else--chocolate beer glass not removed from table  as if to say "you're paying for it anyway" --which is OK--but never an apology or any recognition of charging $5 for a bad experience.
Mentioned we were locals and had been there many times--left feeling ripped off a bit-like we were trying to get away with something. Â Felt a bit unappreciated as return patrons.
Overall, though, the food and ambiance are very enjoyable--would be good to turn down the heat registers in bar area in winter, as one feels almost like a burger on the grill --even several seats away.
We'd been hearing nice things from friends about Freddy Valentine's so as it isn't too far from our home we stopped on a Saturday evening about 6:30 without a reservation. We thought we might be earlier but it was very busy and there was a wait for a table for two. About 20 minutes. Not to worry there were comfortable stools at the bar where we could have a local beer on tap. The decor is nice with stylish round wood bar tables in the front bar area and regular tables in the two dining rooms.
AS we sipped our beers we looked over the menu and learn that the food is all prepared in house and they try to use as much local ingredients as possible. In about 20 minutes we were offered a table in the front room and as it wasn't too noisy and the stools were comfortable we said yes. Our waiter, Jason, was right there and very attentive throughout the meal. There was an evening special of lamb chops but I was too late. They were out. So I ordered the Salmon Pot Pie and my dining companion ordered a Public Burger with a side of Sweet Potato fries.
We did not have a long wait for our food though it was so busy. My pot pie was not a double crust pie but a very large piece of well cooked Salmon on top of cream sauce with potatoes and other vegetables. It was topped with a wedge of phyllo type pastry. It was very good and the portions were generous. The Public Burger (half pound burger with horseradish, bacon, cheese) was nicely done but the star were the sweet potato fries. I will definitely go back just to have them with my favorite adult beverage. Cut lengthwise they were cooked just right with coarse salt on top.
It is really nice to know there is local restaurant we can take our "city" friends that's a nice blend of local casual style, great service, and very good food. We'll be back.
Thanks yelpers for leading me to this place! After taking a meandering day trip west from Madison and not encountering anyplace promising to have lunch, we took a detour towards Spring Green. I opened my trusty yelp app on my phone and the next thing I knew our destination was set to FVPH.
This place is very cool for many reasons. It's an old small town bank converted into a cozy and modern restaurant. I love walking into places and seeing and feeling cleanliness (the bar, restaurant and bathrooms were spotless)...Big ups!
We started with super hot buffalo wings (#5 on a 1-5 scale of heat) and Asian (#3) both which come grilled and not fried. I love spicy food, so for me the #5 Buffalo were an obvious choice and they turned out to be the better of the two. The asian wings were still very tasty though. Homemade ranch and blue cheese dressing accompanied the wings, and while neither were out of this world; they didn't disappoint. In all, It really did not matter though because the buffalo wings were some of the best I've ever had, no joke.
Enjoying the atmosphere, we ended up staying for about 4 hours and the bartenders and staff were super friendly and attentive. After the wings, we decided to try the grilled Caesar salad, mac & cheese and double deuce burger. The caesar is grilled!?! which gave the greens a very smokey and unique flavor. It was really BIG so I don't recommend getting this salad as an appetizer because it's also very rich and filling. The mac n' cheese was decent but kind of forgettable. The double deuce burger is a different story. This is a man-wich burger. It was delicious! It's a 1/2lb patty, piled with a 1/2lb of slow cooked smoked brisket and homemade bbq sauce w/ fries. I will be making the trip back for the burger alone! Â Also, I need to mention that the prices are super reasonable considering the quality of the food and the somewhat contemporary ambiance.
If this place were in Madison I'd give it 4/5 stars but it's not. It's hard to find places like this in small towns and for that I think it deserves 5.
I look forward to making another day trip out there and I think you'll feel the same way if and when you do the same. Â
Cheers!
We first dined on 8/31 having fish and chips and the shepherd's pie. Both of them were excellent and the staff was fantastic. It was so good we went back on 9/2 and tried the BBQ brisket, salmon pot pie, black bean burger, and chicken club sandwich. Again the food was excellent and the service great, we even got to dine in the vault (the building is an old bank). We highly recommend this restaurant.
Review Source:We just had a wonderful dinner at  Freddy Valentines. The atmosphere was charming, the staff was stellar. You could tell they love the place! On the advice of another reviewer, I ordered the grilled cheese, OMG! It was in a class of its own, so good it is worth the extra time in the gym! We will return!
Review Source:Day trip from Madison and my wife, 2 year old daughter and I found this place on a whim. Â The chicken fingers for the kids meal are home made, not frozen! Â Shepard's pie was tasty and the grilled cheese was out of this world. Â Worth the hour plus drive from the east side of Madison for the grilled cheese alone!
I will be back; the owner was working and showed her care. Â Waitstaff was wonderful as well. Â Great spot, great food.
This place is in a National Historic Landmark old Bank building. The building is stunning. Now for the food part - Freddy has anything you want to drink. The owners are here every day. The head chef is really tuned into creative offerings created with some locally sourced foods. We will never go near Spring Green again without stopping here. What a treat for visitors and locals to finally have a place like this!
Review Source:My wife and I stopped for dinner at Freddy Valentines on August 14th after hearing that they just recently opened. Â The food was FANTASTIC! Â Its great to have more options in the Spring Green area for fine dining and not bars and fast food. Â They were only open for a couple of days at this point. Â We sat at the bar to eat, the bartender was a little slow to get our drinks out but we didnt mind at all, as my wife and I are in the business and understand. Â We couldn't of been happier with our meal and service after our initial drinks. Â We will definately be visiting again and hope Freddy Valentines is around for a very long time!
