I'll start by saying I have been coming here since I was tiny with my dad. And I could rave about their food all night long, but I just stopped in here after a day of work with my boyfriend and we decided to sit at the bar and have a few drinks before meeting family.
We were greeted right away and enjoying ourselves but we both noticed the entire staff goofing off we didn't really mind knowing how it goes because we both work in the industry. But after about 20 min with an empty drink I threw a few dollars on the bar and left pretty upset
All of the servers and bartenders walked by at least 4 times never offered another drink to myself or my boyfriend they all just kept getting on their phones and texting. The place wasn't busy at all maybe 5 tables total.
I am very disappointed in the service. Great food but lacking on the service aspect. Pay attention to guests!!!
Stopped here years ago with my then young son on the way to a boys only camping trip to Niagara and points further north. Saw this on America's Best Sandwiches or somesuch, and remembered it. Long way to go to get back on I-71 north, but pretty farm country.
The sandwich has been reviewed lots so I will add a bit, it was good, sausage/bologna had more chew to it than regular bologna does. The sweet pickles wouldn't have been my choice but I went with it, regular style with Am. chez, pickles and mustard as I recall. Good stuff!
Travelers beware that Friday is Waldo Day for the office folks of northern Columbus and they will cause your wait time to increase with their phone in orders during lunchtime.
Been going here for years. Known for their TV featured bologna sandwich, this dive bar takes cash only.
The sammie is fried bologna, onion, sweet pickle, and I get mine with mustard and pepper jack cheese...served on a bun.
The bologna is more like a sausage, and the owner uses 2 different spice makers, so no one has the complete recipe.
Ive read of a successful business man, who now resides in California, but makes trips to the east coast, and always takes his lay over in Columbus, then taxis to Waldo for his fix. Now that dedication.
First timers are referred to as "virgins".
This is an absolute "must go" if you are even anywhere in Ohio.
Make it a day trip, and stop by Mom Wilson's Country Sausage Mart for some great meats/cheese just south of Waldo on 23, open October to May.
World famous dive! Â It's a great local hangout without the "you are an outsider" feel. Â If you are expecting white tablecloths and linens, you aren't going to like this place. If you want a good meal, cheap price and a good low key hangout, get here ASAP!
If you are willing to stray from a bologna sandwich, get the country boy. Â It's a cheeseburger with a slice of bologna riding shotgun on a bun of deliciousness. Â The pies are homemade and cannot be overlooked.
Please bring cash - no plastic is accepted! Â It is clearly written on the paper plate hanging inside the main entrance...
My favorite place to ride on my bicycle from Columbus. 60 miles for the Balogna sandwich and Coconut cream pie is worth it. Â And the calories burned cancels out the pie & sandwich:) Best coconut and peanut butter cream pie I've ever eaten. Also the largest and by far the least expensive!
Review Source:We were camping at Delaware State Park and decided it was too close to Waldo to not go to the G&R for their grilled bologna sandwiches. We arrived for a late lunch on a sunny, warm day and shared the bar area with bikers out enjoying the day. The menu is posted on the wall, but to choose anything other than their thick grilled slices of bologna on a bun would be a crime...it is what they are famous for! I had mine with onion, hubby had cheese and onion. Ketchup and mustard available at your table!
Review Source:The G & R Tavern in Waldo, Ohio is another dive and was a road trip last year that was well worth the over 300 mile day ride. A great day for the Harley and a great bologna sandwich to enjoy at our destination. From their web site: "This isn't just any fried bologna sandwich - it's a 3/4 inch thick slab of the finest bologna, it's our own recipe, you'll ever taste - spicy and garlicky and slightly coarse. It's fried until the outside is browned and crisp and put onto a white bun with the normal condiments of monterey jack cheese, sweet pickles, and onions. It's a combination of taste and texture that works so incredibly well together that it's downright craveworthy." I'm giving it 4 stars.
Review Source:We use to frequent this place for lunch in college when I worked survey crew. Â All I was told was "get the fried bologna, there's nothing like it". Â The guys weren't lying. Â This has to be the best friend bologna sandwich I've ever had.
It's definitely worth a stop just to have a bite. So many people have heard myself and others talk about it and ended up stopping. Â They too agreed, the bologna was superb. Â Definitely a hidden gem in Ohio!
This restaurant is truly one of the best hidden gems in the area. Â My husband and I often order a few beers, two sandwiches, two sides and dessert (I didn't say it was a healthy gem!) and leave with a bill under $30.
The fried bologna sandwich can't be beat and their pies are delicious and a slice is often more than enough to share.
Remember though, this is a cash only place and you leave your tips in a jar at the register. Â
If you ever find yourself around Waldo, you definitely will not be disappointed if you stop in for a bite...unless you are in the mood for a salad.
After seeing this spot mentioned on one of the food shows, I thought we should stop here on a return trip to MI for the...
FRIED BOLOGNA SANDWICH!!
It was off the beaten path for us to get there, but well worth the detour. My husband and I joked with each other about driving for a "bologna sandwich"... but this was so much more! YUMMMMM...
onions, pickles, mustard, B-O-L-O-G-N-A!
I'm not sure why this one was so special. It just was!
Will he take me back again?? I sure hope so. My mouth is watering just thinking about the possibilty. After all, 226 miles is ONLY 3 hours and 41 minutes from home.
I was working in a remote area today and I was told about a restaurant that has world famous fried bologna sandwiches so I had to check it out. Â One of my favorite past times is eating at hole in the wall restaurants so when I found out this was a hole in the wall I was excited. Â I ordered the bologna sandwich with the works and water. Â I needed lemon in the water because of the taste but other than that the sandwich was large and filling. Â They served a thick slice on the sandwich and I had to cut it in half to tackle it. Â II don't want you to think it needed a knife because it was so huge but for me it was better managed eating it in half. Â I thought the price and taste was great. Â As we were eating some men with shirts from the local fire station walked in to eat and my rule of thumb is that fire fighters know how to eat and the good spots to eat reasonably so I was happy the restaurant got their stamp of approval. Â If you are in the area you should give the restaurant a try. Â I think you'll enjoy it.
Review Source:Met some friends for lunch here. Â Been driving by it for years, so I was really looking forward to trying the bologna sandwich, and I was not disappointed.
The place is a typical small-town bar, and that's a good thing. Â There seem to be plenty of locals as well as a few people passing through. Â A fair beer selection, not very big.
The sandwich: not too huge, but with a side (in my case, excellent fried cauliflower) it's plenty filling. Â The bologna is way better than anything you can buy in a store; I hear it's made in Columbus, but I don't know where. Â Fried just right, thick and meaty, and topped however you like. Â I had onion, mustard, and pickles. Â
The bologna salad is a good, different take on ham salad (I'll admit when I first heard about it, I pictured sliced bologna on a green salad...)
Cash only, as mentioned, but not too pricey. Â My sandwich, cauliflower, and a pound of bologna salad to go came to less than $10.
Located on the corner of Waldo's only stoplight intersection, the G&R is waiting to serve you one of the biggest and tastiest fried bologna sandwiches you've ever seen.
Some might say dive, but I hesitate to use this term because I usually think of a dive as being dirty and cheap. Â The G&R is cheap, not dirty. Â Budweiser signs from 20+ years ago adorn the wood paneled walls along with Buckeye memorabilia and a trophy case full of local sports team awards.
You will see: hunting caps, boots, Carhartts, cans of Budweiser, Miller light, Old Milwaukee Light, local soccer/football/band moms wearing pins with their kids picture on it, one standard def TV that doesn't get the Big 10 network (sorry buckeye fans), paper plates, plastic cups, retro vinyl round back chairs, friendly faces.
You will not see: a menu(it's on the wall in an old Pepsi marquee display), high prices, a credit card machine (they only take cash!), a hostes (seat yourself).
I would say 95% of the food here is fried. Â The lady and I got two fried bologna sandwiches with onion, pickles, and cheese and sides. Â me: curly fries, her: onion rings. Â You get a ton of fries with your order, and the onion rings are excellent-- better than the fries which were pretty good, but not seasoned or anything crazy. Â Just curly fries. Â There's not much else to say. Â My girl doesn't really like oscar mayer bologna slices so she was hesitant, but ended up really liking it. Â It's not regular retail bologna and you can taste a difference.
Service was great, but we ate at the bar so I can't comment on servers but really, you're going for fried bologna sandwiches in Waldo, Ohio... you want valet, coat check, or wine suggestions you're in the wrong place buddy.
EPIC FAILS:
1. Cash Only!!! We weren't aware and had to drive up the road and get "handled" by foreign ATM fees.
2. Menu's on the wall and I got a chuckle from the bartender when I asked for a menu.
3. I passed on dessert and after paying the bill, the super cheap two people just ate for 10 bucks bill, I saw the most gloriously massive coconut cream pie that begged to be in my belly.
You like bologna or are bologna-curious, this is your place and is a good trip up here. Â Best way to come here is to make a day of it and check out the nearby Shamrock Vineyards for some tasty Buckeye Red wine, go to G&R for lunch, and head over to the also-close, Lawrence Orchards for some apple picking and hay rides.
I'll admit, the food is, most times, good. I refuse to eat in anymore because so many times I've been in there with family or friends, a few of the waitresses would look over you and be complete snobs. A couple times, the food wasn't made the way I asked them to make it, so that kind of angered me.
The bologna sandwich is still decent, it's good with American Cheese on it too :) For some reason, the bologna does not taste nearly as good as it did 5-10 years ago. A few times in the past several years it's been extremely greasy to where I wouldn't finish it.
If you don't like mushy fries, I recommend asking them to cook them a little longer than normal. It's just a personal preference I have.
Also, if you enjoy clam strips, they have excellent ones. I've only had a couple rubbery ones (which that's hard to find most places).
The pies are extremely good and well priced too.
Upon first glance, G&R looks like a dive bar...but if you get past that, you'll be glad you took the chance. All the appetizers we ordered were yummy--curly fries, munchers, cheese sticks, and fried cauliflower (we all shared apps at our table of 8).
The sandwiches were yummy--even though our friends come from all over the country for the bologna sandwich, and I do like bologna, I had to order something else because I am hard pressed to see a BLT on the menu and ignore it. And it was good! I did try a bit of the bologna sandwich and it was okay, but honestly nothing I would write home (or Yelp!) about. I'd say probably half the people at our table that ordered the sandwich (a lot of first-timers at G&R) weren't too fond of it - with one of the biggest complaints that it came with sweet pickles when they were expecting dill pickle slices. I might also have toasted the bun.
The coconut cream pie was unbelievably good, too! And cheap! Everything was cheap! Our apps and sandwiches and drinks were like $13! The other half of our group had like a $25 bill for four people!
The service was pretty good, although not great. It really depends on the server you get. The waiter our friends had was a big joker and they had a lot of laughs (as we heard from across the room and heard from stories later). Our waiter was nice, but nothing special (and he forgot two salads for our table until we reminded him about 20 minutes later).
So, this place is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Just be sure to bring cash or a check, as they do not accept credit or debit cards!
this is one of those places that my parents discovered years ago and we'd go out of our way to grab lunch on the way to/from lake erie. it used to have an old guy that'd sit under a bumper sticker that said "old fart". the place is filled with trophy cases and old moving beer signs. the menu is limited and simple and couldn't be better. in fact, they could easily limit it to their waffle fries and the bologna sandwich. i've never liked lunch meat bologna, but this sandwich is worth much more than the price you'll pay. it's perfect in every way and the people that work there couldn't be nicer. highly recommended.
