Smoker friendly, decent drinks and the sound system ain't too bad. Definitely better venue than most Central Houston spots, like Walters. Plenty of parking, good bar service.
Only complaint I have is that my friend's band that played there didn't get paid at all while to door made upwards of $300.
Gary's Spot is the Scout's Bar of Tomball, where local bands get their 30 minutes of fame.
My nephew is the drummer for a band called "Bullets in the Sun. " They were one of three bands performing last night at Gary's Spot. Determined to support him and the band, I put my ducks in a row, leaving the house with camera and map.
Everything was smooth sailing up until the last turn of the directions. I couldn't find FM 2920 for the life of me. The staff member that took my calls was not familiar with the area, and the other employee she asked was not much helpful either. They were unable to give me clear directions. I was heading home, when I said I would give them one last call. Fortunately, the third person who took my call was able to give me directions. 40 minutes, 5 calls to Gary's Spot, and 6 u-turns later, I found Gary's Spot.
The deafing sound of rock exploded from the speakers. Unintelligable words were drowned out by amazing guitar riffs and beats of the drums. Head banging, spins, bows, and other rock star moves were used by the players as they jammed away. The motto must be play hard and loud.
I scanned the crowd and spotted my nephew. I was glad that I hadn't missed his band play. It is kind of odd to have a nephew that is 4 years younger than me but it's cool at the same time. I just love the song called "Sweet Sound." It's has a funky beat to it, which was a nice break from the first bands heavy metal.
The smoke from cigarette smoking patrons blended with the fumes from the fog machine, where one began and the other ended was. My hair and clothes reaked for smoke, I knew it.
Rock of Love, from the TV show, is coming to Garys Spot in August of 2009, which sounds pretty cool concert. August 2009, they also have a ladies night featuring adult dancers.;o)
Gary's Spot also makes money from the sale of its calendars, featuring nude women. At first I thought the woman was wearing a flesh like bikini top, a closer revealed bear bossom. hahaha I didn't ask how much they were selling them for, but I did see a patron eagerly pay for one and wrap it up.
The bartender put on a good show. A thin trail of fire was lit all along the bar, probably 10 feet long. It was an amazing sight. It smells like lighter fluid used to light BBQ pits. Yuck. The bartender later went on to show his firebreathing skills by blowing flames behind fellow bartender's back. Talk about an occupational hazard. I cringed for the girl with long hair, who continued to work not knowing the flames behind her.
For great local talent, Gary's hits the spot. For the sake of my ears, next time, I'll bring my ear plugs.
