OK. Stop looking at all the reviews and trying to justify going here because it sounds "local" or that the beer list appeals or because a beer and burger spot is just what you need right now.  "The goat" is NOT it.  Some reviewers mention the "fly problem".  It is no joke.  At one point there were ten plus flies crawling across the food on our plates.  No amount of shooing could keep them away.  The place is a massive dump, with broken furniture, sticky surfaces and old kegs and debris piled within feet of where food is served.  I am really curious what the Health Code rating is for this place.  Frankly, it should be shut down.  Go anywhere else.   Really.

    Confusing arrival/seating system.

Only outdoor seating on the day we went.

    Lots of flies.

    Long wait.

    Loonnnng wait.

Out of their most popular item according to the locals who took me (some kind of house-made veggie patty), so I got a mushroom burger.

Pretty sure they gave me the wrong one because it said spinach but that was nowhere to be found when the dish came.

You were alright, mushroom burger sans spinach. The garlic fries were tastier than you, though.

    So long, Goat Tavern.

No story telling...I'll keep this short:

Atmosphere/ambience- Funky and cool sitting outside with rocky mountain blues music. We are outside so they were flies.

Service- Our waitress was attentive, friendly and fast

Food- I ordered the "best burger in the world" and it was delicious, but not the best I ever tried. My wife had the wino burger and she said it was delicious. My 16 yo son had the korean bbq ribs and he loved his meal, but then he loves anything.

Overall- This is the type of place I love to go and share my experiences with others. Unfortunately our battle with the numerous flies knocked off a couple of stars and ruined our dining experience.

I'm giving this four stars in large part due to its location.  Honestly, Mount Shasta has very little to offer on the dining scene.  If The Goat Tavern was anywhere else, it'd be three stars and possibly less.

First off, it's a bit confusing as to where to enter.  I might think I was the only person with this problem but I noticed other groups later wondering where to enter.  There are signs but you kind of have to walk around the restaurant a bit to figure out that you need to walk back to what you originally thought might be the entrance.  You won't necessarily find anyone to greet you.  You can seat yourself.  We walked inside the restaurant and I only saw one table that sat about four.  Not sure if there was additional seating around the corner but there wasn't that much space inside so I question how they can seat very many during the winter or during the months when you can't or don't want to sit outside.  There were flies all over inside the building.  They are also all over outside.  The majority of them are close to the kitchen window and the door to the restaurant so sit as far away from that scene as possible if you want to limit your exposure to flies.

I will say the day we were there it was not easy to find a table for four outside.  The chairs are not well maintained on the barstools inbetween trees where we sat.  The padding on some of them was torn up.  This is by no means the cleanest or neatest place.  I'd like to see that they passed some sort of inspection.  Didn't notice that during our visit.  I'd be very scared to use the restrooms, but I admit none of us used them.  I can only imagine that it's not the best scene.

Beer selection was decent for Mount Shasta.  They have about 8-10 beers on tap.  We were pleasantly surprised that they have a veggie burger that is not listed on the online menu.  The veggie burger was good and they serve it on ciabatta bread.  It was pretty good.  The fries were alright.  The onion rings as an appetizer were great.  They don't have a kid's menu and my son called this place "not kid friendly."  However, they did make our boys grilled cheese sandwiches with fries even though they aren't listed on the menu.

I would recommend they try to combat the flies better outside, that they get better chairs, work on updating the online menu to reflect their actual offerings so that vegetarians know it's a safe place to eat and that they develop a kid's menu so kids feel like it's more "kid friendly."

So if I could I would give no stars for this place. I am a fellow waiter so I know about steps of service but this was offensive how there was a lack of basic service given to me and my group of 6 motorcycle riders who came from chico.
We first had called for a reservation and were told that they'd have a table for us. When we arrived at 1:30pm we had to seat ourselves and combine tables ourselves. Then we waited 10 mins to be greated by a young blonde waiter. He asked for our drink order and rudely pointed to the board of beer selections when we asked what beers they had. Then we also all wanted waters because it was so hot. We waited 20 minutes for the waters which had to be asked for again to the bartender. Then we relaxed and waited for our food, and we waited, and waited....finally after 45minutes we asked and our sever who we hadn't seen since the drinks were dropped said they'd be right out. So we continued our cinversations and waited another 45minutes. At that point we were so hungry that our group asked again for our food and the waiter said it'd be out again. We had watched others come, eat, and leave in 30mins that we just got up and decided to leave. We informed our server and he just said "oh ok". No effort was made to even comp our three beers or to apologize. I asked a young man if he would get the manager and he said,"I volunteer here, I don't know who is the manager". I left with a sour taste in my mouth and also a huge dissapointment because I have never seen such a bad lack of basic hospitality. Granted I am not expecting five star service but I could have butchered the cow, dressed it, cooked it, and served it in less time than it took. We all ordered burgers and a salad which shouldn't take more than 15minutes during peak hours. We took our business elsewhere and were treated with such good care there. I hope the manager sees this and fixes the problem immediately because there is no reason food for six should take an hour and a half. By the time we left it was 3:05. We will definately pass the word along.

Here to check out the 'worlds best burger' and a PBR on draft.  Can't beat $1.50 PBR and the burger was fantastic. Pefectly cooked . Nice and airy bun and really good onion rings on the burger. Great (crispy on the outside and soft on the inside) garlic fries. The brie bruschetta was also great with the tons of garlic, pesto, and softer than usual bread. Very unique. Handsome John (name of the server from my receipt) was also super cool. It was evident that I was not a local in what is obviously a locals joint, but was treated very warmly by everyone.  I definately reccomend this place if you are on traveling on I5 and want something much more than the typical fast food experience.

The wino burger was excellent and the selection of local beers is good. There was a little concert when we were there and it was very nice. The management could however make a little effort for the decoration inside. Tables and chairs felt cheap and uncomfortable.

One of the best veggie burgers I've had in a long time. Fries & cream of squash soup were also delicous! Cute, cozy, small town atmosphere.

Wow-I love this place!  Funky, cozy and absolutely amazing food. The wino burger is gooey drippy goodness.  Garlic fries that stand on their own merit, and the grilled chicken sandwich was delish. Don't miss this place!

We found this place totally accidentally.  We drove by and yelped it and saw that it had good ratings and loved the look and the name so we stopped by when we had originally planned to get some fast food.  It has a very small indoor seating area, but all the outside seating was taken and it was kind of cold when we were there so we had no other choice but to sit inside.

We had the turkey sandwich and the pastrami sandwich and split it.  I really enjoyed the garlic fries and the chipotle sauce that came with the turkey sandwich, but I did not enjoy the turkey so much.  I can't really pin point why I did not like it, it did not taste foul I guess it was just a personal taste thing.

The Pastrami sandwich was very good.  It is probably some of the better pastrami I had, I did not get one bit of fat.  My husband like the side soup, which was some kind of veggie soup, I did not enjoy it, thought it was too mushy.

The service was not the best.  The server barely came to our table and it took about 25-30 minutes from when we ordered to when the food arrived (we sat at the table near the clock).  I was a little bummed that we did not get to try one of their burgers, tables all around us ordered burgers and they looked pretty amazing.  This seems like the kind of place you want to take your time in, have a few beers and eat a burger.  If we ever happen to stop by here again I will definitely go back when we are not anxious to get to the hotel which was still a few hours down the road.

I give this place only 3 stars because the food took forever to get to us, the server was not that attentive and I did not enjoy one of the sandwiches that much and they were kind of pricey, but I am sure that the other food is pretty good, it looked good anyway.

Great beer selection, I had the goat cheese and wine burger-- it was just average.

    Garlic Fries are YUMZ!

Server looked like a goat man and was real grumpy bout splitting our check when he wasn't busy.

Some friends and I were staying overnight in Mt Shasta on an annual road trip and decided to stop in on a whim on Saturday evening.  They have a decent selection of really good beer and delicious burgers and sandwiches.  The staff was friendly and our orders came up quickly.  I won't be back in Shasta for another year, but I definitely plan on adding The Goat Tavern to the annual tradition.

The flies of The Goat Stable, I mean The Goat Tavern.  I really deliberated between 1 and 2 stars.

I've been here twice.  The first time was OK, nothing to write home about, but good enough to want to go back.

This time, not OK.  We came in August at about 6:30 PM.  It was busy as expected.  We got a table outside.  The inside was full and loud.  The major problem was that outside was so infested with flies that it was insane.  I mean thousands.  There was food all over the service station covered in flies, and every table was constantly shooing them away with no luck.  The lady next to us was alone and reading.  In between her bites, like 20 flies would land in the pastrami of her sandwich, but she just kept eating it.  My husband wanted to puke.  We kept our napkins on our food.

The food could be really great.  It's just very sloppy.  They are trying to do too much with too little, and your food arrives looking like it.  My food was decent, but thrown together, so was my husband's.

There is one bathroom with one of those archaic rotating cloth towel machines.  I can't imagine how the state has not banned these things.

This place was dirty because it was too busy for the amount of staff and the size of the building.  They seem overwhelmed but perfectly happy with just scraping by.

My husband wants me to add this...

You know the scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where Indy is in the Indian village at the beginning?  Remember how disgusted they were by the fly-covered food yet felt compelled to eat?  All my husband could think of was that old woman saying "eat eat" in her funny tiny voice and Indy saying "You are offending them and embarrassing me...eat".

    We probably won't go back.

Good food and our kids (under 9) liked it too.  At outside and the weather was great.

The waitresses were not very friendly or talkative but it didn't ruin the meal or experience.

Dogs are NOT allowed on the outside deck, but surly service is. The food might be great, but I'm not into rude staff that much, so we left after a long wait of not getting menus and then getting menus with a side of attitude. If you have a big group, can find a table, and can keep yourselves occupied without worrying about how long it's going to take or the service, I'm sure it's a great place.

-- *Road trip 2012 review!* My boyfriend and I took a random, unplanned road trip up the West coast this summer. With a lot of help from Yelp we stumbled across some great (and not so great) finds!*--

Hippie central!! And we loved every second!

No wonder this quaint little place is so highly rated. It effing rocks! No, it literally did on our visit. There was a live jam band playing on the side patio and it was packed. There wasn't an empty seat in the house!

We found this gem thanks to Yelp after a long hike up Mt Shasta and it was exactly what we were looking for.

Beers, burgers and the best people watching Mt Shasta could offer.

The menu had me at "Wino Burger." I mean, c'mon! It must've been made just for me. Beef with cabernet sauce & goat cheese?! I could only eat half. The salad-like toppings were fab & I was a huge fan of the bun, too!

The fella is a self-proclaimed fish taco aficionado and it's official: the one's here are top notch. Corn tortillas topped with flavorful salsa and fresh fish. I can also confirm that these are the sh$%. The fish is a weaker flavored fish so a lot of the flavors were a bit overpowering, but the flavors were impressive and jived really well together.

Creative flavor pairings were all over this menu! Despite my heart being sold on the Wino Burger from first glance, I entertained the thought (but only for a second) of ordering about 5 other things.

A lot of the beers were local and the chalkboard menu on the back patio was helpful since I felt bad asking our server all the beers she had because we were totally unfamiliar.

Prices were reasonable, too. We got away with two entrees and four craft beers for about $50 (including tip.)

Such an eclectic place with a cool vibe, stellar food, a nice beer selection, and the occasional smelly hippe.

Skip the fries, drink another beer
I would have given them 4 or 5 stars, but the fries were a little much. My husband and I love a good burger with our beer after we're done hiking, so we headed here. I got the Wino burger, which was good, but more bland than I expected and my husband got the smoked turkey sandwich, which was amazing. They both came with these thin fries that had fresh garlic all over them. They were delicious, but gave my husband and I the worst indigestion- we were belching the most gross garlic burps for the next 6 hours. The beer selection was adequate and the wait staff was very friendly. I'd go back again easily, but I'd tell them to hold the fries.

Awesome, awesome hamburgers! No frills, small place. Good selection of beers on tap that they apparently change up a lot (look at the ceiling to see the tap levers of all the beers they've had there).

Service was quick and efficient, but still took the time to explain some of the different beers so I could pick one that I wanted and they were very accomodating when it got a little too chilly for Miyuki outside and we asked to move to indoors.

The burgers...OMG! I had the Wino burger - as others have written - amazingly good. Miyuki had the "Possibly the Best Burger in the World". They aren't bragging. Don't know how the prep thier patties - but i could see being addicted if I lived up here.

We may even go back tomorrow before we go home :-).

I was very surprised at this place!
It was in a cute tavern old house kind of place.
Not a fan of the decor inside. Very Messy American bar kind of feel.
However I was extremely impressed by the food!!
    That chef was incredible!
The food looked beautiful how it was brought out as well as tasted amazing!
I went there with some friends from Denmark and one of them ordered a burger because it said that they had the best burgers in the world and he has literally had burgers all over the world. Tried the burger and agreed that it was the best that he has had.
I had a Chechen sandwich that was amazing!
I would recommend this place, maybe sit outside. The music inside is terrible and loud. Other than that. A great experience and inexpensive

Okay, this place definitely has good burgers, but the thought ran through my head "is this one of those trendy theme places i've heard about that have waiters that are rude and insult you on purpose?" I actually mentioned this to one of the 7 friends I came there with. we just looked at each other in shock when we heard things like:

-in response to "do you have half-pints of beer?" waiter says "we only have pints of beer, half-pints are gay"
-in response to "we're ready to order" waiter says "no, we're going to take your drink order first, how's that?!"
-In response to "what's good on tap?", response: "everything on that board"
-halfway through our drink order waiter abruptly leaves mumbling "i've got other customers to take care of"
-in response to "can we split the check?" waiter replies "No, you're too big a group for that" even though we were on two different tables, and likely because he get's an automatic 18% tip regardless of the level of service.

admittedly, he seemed to remember he's in the service industry and started to provide a little friendlier service by the end of the meal, but I was afraid to even ask for some water after that treatment!

The Food: the burgers were definitely amazing, the Wino Burger with goat cheese and wine reduction sauce and a side of garlic fries was awesome, perfect after a day on the mountain.

The Restaurant is small, maybe 6 tables, we had to really squeeze in there.

Overall, we were so hungry and the burgers were so good that i miiight brave this place again, maybe the waiter just having a terrible day and decided to take it out on his customers.

Goat Tavern is a cool little place... not the biggest place ever but it's cozy. I love the mellow vibe that exemplifies the laid-back Mt. Shasta populace.

If you're just grabbing a beer, hang out in the small inside area and take a gander at the ceiling covered in beer taps. Or if the weather's nice, sit outside on their pleasant patio and enjoy some drinks and food. They offer standard pub fare, including great sandwiches and burgers.

This is basically a local bar with a few tables inside (and more outside on the deck), an interesting menu and a good vibe. We tried it after a long drive up from the Bay Area, seeking tasty burgers.

For a small town bar, I will say their food is above average. For the level of awesome burgers I am used to back home, it wasn't much to write home about but was still satisfying enough. What WAS definitely good was the service of the bartenders/waiters who were kind enough to serve us near closing and didn't throw any attitude about us splitting what is to us a large portion, or for not ordering any booze. I also liked the music. The prices were good, too.

Great little place to eat lunch, and sitting out on the deck watching people and cars go by was relaxing. Service was fast and friendly. I had the grilled ahi tuna and garlic fries. My dining companions had nachos that they were raving about. The beer selection looked amazing, but I stuck with iced tea.
We ate there a few years ago, and had a great experience then too. :-)

Two words: Wino Burger.  I came in here after a long day of fishing based on the reviews here on Yelp.  With how quiet the town of Mt Shasta is, I was not expecting "gourmet" fare or an amazing beer selection- but boy was I wrong!  We were there on a friday night, and most of the tables were filled with a fairly eclectic crowd.  They had sports and some other stuff on the TV's, and about twelve beers on tap, mostly microbrews.

After poring over the menu for a few minutes, I settled on the aformentioned Wino Burger: topped with peppered goat cheese, thick-cut bacon, wild salad greens, and a red wine reduction sauce.  Oh, and don't forget the garlic fries.  I also ordered a beer from their solid tap list of microbrews... you can't go wrong with a Racer 5 IPA.

It took less than ten minutes for all of our food to come out. We were all shocked at how quick the service was, and everything was truly excellent.  My friend's kobe beef burger was great, and my dad's fish and chips were good.  The only thing I would want to see different would be a bit more fish in the fish and chips- the pieces were fairly small.

All in all, a great experience.  We tried to work in another visit for lunch later in our trip but we couldn't make it happen.  I'll definitely be coming back though, should I ever make it up to the area again.

    This is the real deal!

Excellent local beer, good bar food and an uber relaxed atmosphere.
It's perfect for the town it's in. A getaway.
Perfect for after the mountainbiking or snowboarding or climbing.
I love to unwind here. The folks are chill.
    The burgers ARE great.

We got exactly what we expected after reading the reviews on Yelp.

    Pro's ~
The menu seemed promising and we were excited to try one of there many different local beers.

Yes, the garlic fries are delicious and my boyfriend loved the wasabi mayo on his ahi burger so much he wouldn't share.

The restaurant itself is very small with a mountain town atmosphere, I can see why the locals like it.

    Cons ~
I was so excited to have a kobe hamburger but guess what? No kobe for anyone on Wednesdays as it's delivery day. The waiter said with a straight face, "kobe goes fast in these parts".

If you're in a rush heads up... There's only one waiter.

All in all not bad for a quick stop on our way up the I-5

This place is great. So great that I went one day and went back the next day even though I wasn't hungry and still managed to scarf down a wino burger and all of the delicious garlic fries that accompanied it.

Service was a bit slow but the awesome food more than makes up for it.

I've been going to the Billy Goat Tavern at lease once a year since it opened, during my annual family vacation up to the area.

After trying "the wino burger" last year, I spent many nights dreaming of my return. With caramelized onions, peppered goat cheese, bacon, mixed greens and a Cabernet reduction sauce, this burger is as savory as it gets for me! The menu has a great selection that goes far beyond "bar food", combined with a great beer selection, friendly service, and a nice outdoor patio area...it is the epitome of content when I'm there. Life seems to disappear at the Billy Goat, a great casual place to just sit and enjoy time passing by.

Unfortunately they just had to change their name to the "Goat Tavern" due to a law suit threat from some place on the east coast...c'mon...like they're such a threat up there in Lil ol Mt. Shasta. Definitely stop by by and have a brew and burger when in the area.

Quirky, independent North California type of place. I went in on the recommendation of the manager at my motel, the evening before I set off on my Shasta climb. I was starving after a long drive up from SF and I wanted some comfort food in a casual, comfortable environment. Goats Tavern was exactly what I needed. It's a small place near the center of town & it's staffed by friendly, no-nonsense types.

There's a good selection of beers (which I mostly didn't recognize) - a subset, it seems, of the vast array of beer taps pinned to the ceiling above me! I went for a Blue Star wheat beer to go along with the "Bird" sandwich I ordered (a strange bird indeed - turkey + chicken, along with bacon, tomato & lettuce and an interesting sweet secret sauce - very good & big and served with tasty garlic fries.)

The food was good. The place was filled with locals - clearly a good sign. (Though I still felt welcome, even though I was on my own & clearly an out-of-towner.) A good choice - I felt full & satisfied as I rolled out & got ready for the big climb ahead...

Our group made our way north from a day hike in the Dunsmuir area just to eat at the goat. I had never been here, but was told by some in our party that it was the best pulled pork sandwich in the area. I ordered the pulled pork, and my girlfriend ordered the "Possibly Best Burger".

We split our sandwiches and shared, both of them were delicious. Everything about the burger was perfect, and the pulled pork sandwich was awesome as well, though it could have used a little more sauce. We'll be going here again next time we're in the area.

After having 2 God-awful meals in neighbor city, Weed, my friend and I went there after looking at reviews here on Yelp. We were not disappointed. She had the "Possibly the Best Burger" and I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich and both were delicious. We also ordered the Garlic Fries with Chipotle Mayo....Yummy!!! Good selection of beers on tap and our server was really nice and helpful.

Only 2 complaints. The place is really small and crowded. AND it was pretty cold in there so dress warm. We, fortunately, were able to sit by the space heaters.

Good food, interesting atmosphere.  We stopped on the return trip from Ashland for lunch -- I had a burger, boyfriend had the pulled pork sandwich.  The food was pretty good, but to us the feel of the place wasn't really...relaxing?  Everything felt a little dirty (we sat outside at a table with that kind of textured plastic tablecover you can never get clean), when I think what we wanted at that point was, I dunno, cozy?

Still, it beats chain restaurant road trip food.  Maybe in a non-dead-tired-road-trip mood we'd've enjoyed the scene more.

Came here for dinner during a stopover en route back to Portland after my extended trip back home.

I can see why people like this place: lots of beer, good vibe (if you're local...it's just one of those places where everyone seems to know each other) and they serve food too. I had the portobello sandwich with a side of clam chowder. The soup was good and the portobello was nice and juicy but I wasn't completely head over heels for it.

I just wished that the kitchen exhaust fan wasn't broken because all the cooking smoke filled up the entire bar and it was STUFFY and there were so many flies buzzing around us which made it hard to eat.

Now if I just came here for beer, I'd probably up my rating so for now, 3 stars.

The food was pretty good and it was cheap. You have a lot of choices and the portions are generous. I really liked my burger.

If you like waiting, this is the place for you!

We went at about 5 p.m. on a Sunday evening thinking we would avoid the dinner rush, but the service was so incredibly slow that it made no difference. We waited a long time between every step of the dining process; getting the table cleaned, ordering drinks, getting a menu, ordering dinner, actually getting our drinks and food- it all took a really long time. To get a beer and a hamburger took 50 minutes. Maybe I'm just used to life in the fast lane and I need to take a chill pill, but that seemed like too long for me.

They do have a nice beer selection, and the burger was fine, if not a little under-done.

I'm going to preface this review with a disclaimer: I had -just- left Mt. Shasta after being on the mountain for three days, up since midnight trying to (unsuccessfully) climb the summit, and dead tired. I probably could have eaten a raw cow and it would have tasted like the best meal on earth!

On the mountain, my friends and I fantasized about getting a burger and a beer once we got down, and this place didn't disappoint. Good selection of beers (the beer menu doesn't even advertise Bud or those other "beers"), and a menu full of burgers, sandwiches, and salads.

I got the "World's best burger" - burger with onion rings, bbq sauce, bacon, and other caloric goodies I can't remember right now, and it came with some damn awesome garlic fries. SO GOOD. I had to stop myself from inhaling the food as quickly as I wanted to so I wouldn't choke.

Our table-neighbors got an amazing platter of nachos - they looked delicious and I will probably order this the next time I come by.

So I may be a bit biased about the food quality since I was so deprived of non-freeze-dried food for three days, but DAMN this place was perfect. Highly recommended for anyone coming down from Shasta.

E for Effort! or A ...Whatever.
This is the place for good food and good service from a great accommodating staff.  You can see why it's so popular.

They welcome you in like family and then feed you like you're in the south  (bigger portions) and paying prices that are in the mid-west (not-expensive) with a menu that was definitely created on the North Coast.

Nice outdoor seating right at the edge of main st.
great atmosphere all around. Even the other guests made us feel welcome. You can't beat that in a restaurant.

I had one of the best lunches ever here. We heard that this is where the locals go to eat and it looked like a neat place so we checked it out. The inside is dark and cramped, just like a tavern should be. A teevee showing sports behind the bar, and loads of beer on tap.

A spunky blonde lets us pick a table and we check out the menu. It's not exactly what you would expect from a tavern in the mountains, kobe beef burgers, fancy salads and lots of interesting but awesome sounding sammiches. I go with their mozzarella and tomato sammich on tasted sourdough and garlic fries. Hubster gets fish tacos (he's been on a kick with them lately) and a locally brewed beer.

Our food comes out and it's the most awesome looking sammich and fries ever! The sammich is perfectly golden toasted bread with loads of gooey cheese, fresh, tomatoes and bright strips of basil. The fries are gorgeous, skinny, crisp and perfectly coated with garlic and salt. HEAVEN. I demolished my food and felt I could die a happy girl. Hubster liked his fish tacos and managed to steal some of my fries.

My tummy didn't like all that cheese and was kind of mad at me later but it was worth it.

We returned for a late dinner the next day and while it was tempting to order the mozzarella sammich again, I didn't for fear of a second bought of severe gastrointestinal distress. Went with a caeser salad with chicken and more of those yummy fries. Hubster got a steak sammich. Again, very pleased with the food. The chicken on my salad was juicy and flavorful (and blackened/grilled nicely), the dressing was good but not overpowering and the croutons were homemade. Fries were excellent. Hubster enjoyed his sammich I think but honestly I was pretty focused on my own meal, the gorgeous sun (we nicked a spot on the patio) and the most adorable little baby at the table across from us.

I would literally drive up all the way to Shasta just to eat here.
