The last time I traveled through Birmingham (which was for an Allman Brothers concert I damn near got arrested @), I noticed this place come up call Golden Rule BBQ. Â My buddy and I went to one (claimed it was the original, hell aren't they all?) right off of I-20 a few miles before Birmingham.
On my way home from Memphis, I was starving. Â So I wanted to go to the same location. Â Unfortunately with snow and pink skies I was distracted, and somehow managed to miss the same location. Â I saw a sign for a Cracker Barrel a few miles down, and I aimed for it. Â As I got to the exit, I saw there was a Golden Rule- so I decided to check it out.
I was shocked there wasn't anything on Yelp on it, so I had to add what I knew about it (not much). Â As I got seated, I kept getting mixed looks from not only the patrons, but by some staff. Â Was someone going to spill a drink on me so they would get their ass beat? Thankfully that wasn't the case. Â Guess I just need to get used to the looks. Â
As I looked through the big menu, I made my pick and started watching TV. Â One of the employees came up to me and started talking to me about my shoes. Â I thought that was kind of odd, as he came up to me 2-3 times. Â Yes, I am aware people can be friendly, however, I find it odd that my credit card (same one I used here) info was stolen just a few days later. Â Coincidence? Â Hopefully for his sake.
I ordered fried green tomatoes to start off with. Â Let me let you in on a little secret- not a big fan of tomatoes, but if they fry them right, I might enjoy them. Â These were decent, but were hotter than hell. I think I burned my mouth 4 times, even after letting them rest. Â I probably could have cooked bacon on top of them they were so hot. Â
Then my meat platter came out. Â It did just the right amount of filling my stomach. Â With the sauce choices on the table, it was pretty good. Â Oh yea, they serve Coke and beer here. Â The Coke is in a huge glass and they will keep it filled. Â I remember this because my trip was extended at least an hour for all of the extra stops I had to take to piss (did not bring diapers this trip). Â
The service was friendly, almost a little too friendly, and that kind of keeps me on edge. Â If they did me wrong with my card, that would suck on their part- because they have some decent BBQ!
