The best food in Alvin, Texas overall and by far the best beer selection.

They have really upped their game, especially in the craft beer department as of late.  So many good beers on tap, it makes for a hard decision each time I visit.

Service isn't always perfect.  Sit at the bar if you can.

Not all of the waitstaff is up to date on the craft beers they have, but Kyle is knowledgable.

As for the food, there are three items that I love and rotate through.  The Buffalo Chicken sandwich is one of the best  of its kind that I have had.  I get it hot and the breaded version.

The Junky Monkey is a chili cheese hotdog. The catch is they make their own sausage and it is delicious.  The house made chili, which is a Texas red chili is also fantastic.

The Smoked Cheddar Burger is also fantastic.  Smoked cheddar cheese, a half pound smoked beef patty, topped with smoked bacon and a house made bbq sauce. I love the sauce so much I always ask for more on the side to dip my fries in.

As for appetizers the Chili Cheese Tater Tots or Gravy and Cheese fries are the best in my opinion.  I used to like the fries even more when they cut their own waffle fries, but now they have gone to using a more traditional string fry cut.  They don't hold up as well in the brown gravy.  It's basically an American version of Poutine I guess.   Shredded cheese instead of cheese curds of course.

Adorable little pub in downtown Alvin. The burger was huge and wonderful, the only (semi) downside being spending $15 on the burger alone, no sides, no drink... But I'd definitely return if in the Alvin area!

Dropped in the mid afternoon for a couple of beers and an appetizer...One guy was at the bar and one table of four people...Got my 1st beer...The girl bartender paid attention to the single guy then took a burger order from the 4 top table..Then my beer was empty...I wanted to order some food and another beer..The girl bartender was WATCHING VIDEOS ON HER CELL PHONE! Apparently, that was more important than taking care of her customer...(She would have got $5-8 for a tip)...BAD SERVICE!

My husband and I have been here 3 saturdays in a row. We get there right when they open - at 11 - and this way we get our choice of where we sit. Twice we've had the same waitress who was very helpful, honest, and knowledgable about the menu. She was also very attentive. Every time we've gone we've had very VERY good experience and the food was always fresh. Nothing has tasted cookie-cutter or frozen. Another great perk of going on Saturday (early) is that they serve $5 liter pre-prohibition beer. My husband and I enjoy going there for a casual lunch without having to contend with a crowd. We will continue to go there as long as they keep up the good service and great food and terrific beer special. More about the food: The Junky Monkey is delish: a juicy hand-crafted hot dog with a good snap smothered in terrific chili. The burgers are juicy, fresh, and served on Hawaiian sweet rolls. The Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich - wow! Great sandwich. I'm going to try everything on the menu.

The two stars are for the local beer. The lack of stars was for service. If your not going to sit at the bar, then expect some bad service ( unless your in a party of 5+). Bar tenders are less than knowledgeable. I was told all the beers on tap were foreign. I didn't know shiner bock was foreign. Sum it up bar food good, beer good, service bad.

This review is for the service; or I should say, lack thereof.

Attempted to eat lunch here today after early voting nearby at the library. Was pleased to see a pretty good lunch crowd when we walked in. No one greeted us, so we seated ourselves next to the wall. Then, we watched as the bartender and two wait persons completely ignored our presence for the next 5-7 minutes.

No one greeted us, as I said earlier, and the wait people were obviously just too busy helping other people to even shoot a glance our way or shout out to say they'd be with us in a minute. Perhaps it was my black and blue hair. If that was the case, I don't want to spend my money here anyway. But, I don't know.

If service starts out like this, I can only imagine what this might be like when we're done, ready to go and now waiting on our check or change. Sorry, but we had to leave.

Written in my travelogue: A huge turn-off. Will probably not go back. Heard the food wasn't that great anyway.

Great people and food but I was hoping for more of a bar instead of a restaurant. You can get the same food at the burger bar so just go there and let us people who want to hang out and drink do that. 5 stars when that happens.
Also do not bother going on Saturday night. My buddy and I were going every Saturday night until they started having bands and other entertainment taking up the middle of place. Not even good entertainment.

Really nice tavern with good draft selection of about 30 taps of craft beers (excellent selection when considering what else is out here)...nIce decor and atmosphere, attentIve staff, good food wIth more than the usual bar food, really comfortable chairs and booths (important for us 40 somethings), and clean restrooms. A nice place to come with your man and watch sports, drink beer and have a meal. Second time here. I would highly recommend Gordon Street!

My husband and I visit the tavern at least once a week. The servers are friendly, the burgers are great, and the beer selection is awesome.

Alvin finally has a place where we can hang out and enjoy a few drinks with our meal. Long gone are the days of leaving town just to get food and craft beer. It is very refreshing to see family owned businesses developing in Alvin.

If you like a local business, then support it. That is the only way they will be able to stay open.

Hubby and I were looking forward to trying the "tavern" since there has been much hype in the local Alvin newspaper.  This place is adjacent to the Barbed Rose and the Barbed Rose Burger Bar so I assume they share the same kitchen and chef since the Barbed Rose's Chef Jason made several appearances at the bar while we were there.  We arrived about 6pm to a parking lot with several cars and more than a few Harleys.  We seated ourselves and within a few minutes our waitress arrived.   Hubby ordered Shiner with a starter of queso and chips.  Queso had the consistency of Elmer's Glue.  It tasted okay, but it should have been served at a warmer temp.  When we attemped to run the chips through, they would break- we ended up using our forks to scrape it onto our chips.  For entrees, Hubby ordered the large size Frito Pie and I chose the small order of Fish 'n Chips.   Hubby was satisfied with his selection, I was not.  I got a small aluminum bowl of frozen waffle fries topped with two cod fillets that after biting into one, left me asking "Where's the fish?".   The "plate" was an aluminum pizza pan covered with a "checkered" black and white waxed paper that shredded as I cut into my fish.  I ended up eating the fish planks with my fingers, adding spritzes of malt vinegar before each bite. The manager (all tatted up) came by our table to suggest we try a different beer next visit.  He seemed more occupied with the biker crowd at the bar (who didn't order food) who were spending $$ on liquor. To sum it up? Service was better here than in the Burger Bar, the portions were okay, the quality of the food was not.  So disappointed.  May give it one more try.
