I had Panini and french fries after 2-day hike (total 18.2 miles, 4700 feet elevation gain). That means food is delicious. I always like eating American burgers/sandwiches after a big hike. Only burgers and sandwiches. If you don't like American food, it's not for you. but I really like here!

If it was not for the location in the park, this place would surely be out of business.
I really regretted not looking at the Yelp reviews before going there.
I had a ridiculously small and sad spinach salad with only a few spinach leaves (probably from a bag) and a few walnuts and berries for $12.95.
I decided to stop the experience here, as the rest of the menu looked really boring and expensive. I left this place hungry and feeling like I have been robbed.
Unfortunately this seems to be one of the only option in the park. If you are at one of the campground around, you better buy something at the supermarket next door and cook something yourself.

National Park concessionaire restaurants are never wonderful places, but I've never seen a place as poorly run as this. You'd get better food and service if you went into the forest and waited for a bear to come by and crap on you. There doesn't seem to be anyone manager-like running the place, so it was run on the night we visited by three waitresses who didn't enjoy their jobs and were in the middle of an extended fight with the befuddled boy seating people. We waited 10 minutes to be seated in a practically empty restaurant, then waited another 10 minutes for a bitter waitress to bother showing up. She brought us pieces of charcoal to eat about 20 minutes later, then told the befuddled host boy that she was leaving, and that he could have whatever tips she might get. I never stiff a waitress, but neither she nor the befuddled boy got anything from us. If you absolutely must eat, drive the 40 miles to Fresno. It's worth it.

This restaurant has a limited menu, but the portions are great. Burger is average. The best things are the trout almondine, the cobb salad with chicken (which is massive), and the grilled eggplant with onions. And, you're inside the park, so the prices and quality are about what you'd expect.

However, it seems like this restaurant doesn't have a manager, as it is understaffed with waitresses that take a very long time to come around to your table and if you don't go early, you'll have to wait (and there's really not a good system to handle waiting people).

The Grilled Eggplant sandwich with sweet onions was tasty! Pile it up with lettuce, tomatoes and more crisp red onions with a side of fruit. I would definitely come back and have this same dish next time. I also got a scoop of their Strawberry ice Cream and it had nice chunks of strawberries in it- yum!

It is located right across from the visitor Center.

As others have said you are stuck if you want food within 30 minutes of Kings Canyon. So we reluctantly ate here. The service was slow, and they weren't all that busy. The meals are priced sorta fair, given the remote location. The quality of the food was below average. I had Chicken that was salty and soaked in butter. The white rice side and vegetables was slightly better. They had asparagus soup on the specials board, but Lindsay our server said it was out all gone yet still on the board. Then the table next to us ordered asked to order the soup and she let them saying it was just being made. The staff knew all the right things to ask and say, but yet I felt the service like they were trying too hard to compensate and fell short. Avoid this place if possible, but if you haven't eaten you probably will end up here like everyone else.

The menu is limited, the ingredients are of mediocre quality, the kitchen is unable to make substitutions or menu alterations for allergies, and it's got tourist prices. But it's the only place around, and it's food.

The best part of the meal was generally the rice and vegetables, because they were doused in butter, but portion sizes are tiny and totally insufficient for someone coming down off a long hike. I was hungry after every meal, even with appetizers. The eggplant sandwich had literally two small slices of eggplant hidden between the buns. The milkshakes were OK.

For breakfast, the eggs are sloppily cooked and the hashbrowns are a small, thin patch of hard potatoes fried into a crust, but the coffee is strong.

Great area for hiking, camping, sunsets, and so on. Terrible food.

Apart from our server Lindsey - who was a delight - this place is a sh*thole.
We were very hungry after a day's hiking, but should have paid the quadruple over-price for propane and cooked for ourself.
We paid $15 for 3 slices of eggplant and a 1/2 cup of rice. Tasted crap.
I guess an example of a place that knows it has a captive audience and can charge a premium for a crappy product.
Only downside to our visit to the beautiful Sequoia National Forest.

Waited forever for my food. When i got it, the chicken breast was dry and lukewarm. The grilled veggies were downright cold, a was the rice, which was also insipid. Prices were somewhat inflated. Avoid

I've eaten at many national parks and eaten pretty decent food at these restaurants. But this restaurant seems to only stay in business because it's the only place around. We had discussed driving 30 minutes to eat dinner, but opted to eat here because it was closer. We later wished we had driven for a better (and cheaper) meal.

Bottom line: Bad, very overpriced food in a beautiful location.

They can't even make decent breakfast. And the chicken breast at dinner was so overcooked you could use it as firewood.

Next time, I'm packing in my food.

There is nothing exciting about the restaurant, but I didn't expect it to be some four-star dining establishment. Besides, it was our only choice since we didn't bring our own camp food :) Prices are inflated because they know they're the only sit down establishment for non campers to get some grub.

I ate three meals here but breakfast was probably the best. It usually is, in my opinion... it's kind of hard to mess it up. Breakfast hours are 7 am - 10:30 am. There are daily specials, but I ordered off of the regular menu. Pancakes were okay, eggs were fine, but the toast could have used more time getting toasty, and the bacon was a thick cut. My friend's biscuit was apparently delicious. I didn't try it myself.

Lunch hours are 11 am - 2 pm, and there are daily specials for the lunch hour as well. I had their special for the roast beef BBQ sandwich, which was quite tasty, and messy. I threw in some onion rings to make it decadent and was quite content. There was nothing special about it, and I wouldn't crave it again.

Dinner hours are 5 pm - 9 pm. I ordered the grilled chicken with veggies. The sides were fine, but the chicken was a bit overcooked. It did have a good flavor, though. Beer and wine is available for purchase if you wish to get your drink on. The triple chocolate cake (hey, it was my birthday!) is quite rich and very fudgy. Everything a girl needs in a chocolate cake. I'm 99.9% it was store bought, but at least it wasn't Costco cake.

This is going to sound silly, but I honestly think the best thing at the restaurant was the water - not from the bottle! I'm a city girl through and through, and I've had some horrible tasting tap water in my life. Even my friend commented on how good the water was... it tastes how you think water should taste! Not murky, muddy or chlorinated - just fresh and pure.

Service was pretty good, though the best server we had was Angie, for our breakfast. She was very personable, attentive and quite efficient considering how many tables she was juggling. I was there in the off season, but I can see how it can easily back up during the busy season. There's probably only one or two cooks in the back cooking for the entire floor, and their tools are probably just as dated as the front of the house.

*For Grant Grove Pizza Only*

In the park, I was starving and options were limited. I would have eaten paper napkins if they'd give me some ketchup. But here it is guys, Grant Grove Pizza is actually really good. $8.75 for a small two topping pizza that was delicious, with lots of good cheese and chewy crust. The cheese garlic bread looked insanely good but the portion would have been gigantic. I inquired about getting a half order and the nice girl behind the counter made it for me and didn't even charge.

Being in the pitiful state that I was in (with a camera battery charging behind me), that sort of kindness really felt good. This place being in a prime location to rip you a new asshole with bad food and high prices, choose not to do so. The pizza was great by any standard, service friendly, and everything is reasonably priced.

we spent some time in the park during the winter and did some hiking. for convenience we went a couple of times to the restaurant for lunch.
the food is ok (american), service was fast and nice. the waiters were definitely trying.
food options itself were not that many but I appreciated the fruit salad options instead of fries for kids and grownups. the fruit were fresh and yummy, not like in many other places.
burgers were fine, too. i liked this place more than the much more expensive and less friendly wuksachi lodge restaurant.

Uninspiring menu in such a fantastic location. With a captive audience of tourists I guess that's what you get. Very limited menu choices for vegetarians unless you like eggplant and cheese. Nothing fresh? No burritos! No avocado! No pizza ? And this is California! Servers were friendly, prices over-inflated, menu boring and unhealthy - don't expect to recharge batteries after a days hiking.

Local shop -when open - has decent beer selection, but again nothing fresh.
Location awesome and lodge well priced in winter. Nice snow shoe trails to General Grant.

Avoid this place. Unless they have new management since the summer of 2011, or you are starving and the pizza place is closed and the market is too...and your camper neighbors don't have anything extra...*and* you want a severe stomach ache (always fun when you have to trek to the potties, lol)...AND you want to hear the manager yelling at the waitresses that have zero direction. That's the best!

That might be enough of a review on it's own! But no. there is also the food. And the service.

The worst biscuits and gravy. EVER. I think it was a type of cement, not gravy. Poor Cook - BET you a million that s/he is forced to use a packet. Tasted like glop.

Sure the bacon was good - but even charred, bacon is good! (ok, unless it's raw - that's not their problem!)

Scrambled eggs HAD to have been rehydrated. They were dry and tough and tasteless.

Waitresses and servers (seemed to be all female) have no direction, no management and with that yelling, angry woman "directing," who would? I Now, I know that blaming staff has a place, but I also know that poor management is what *really* kills service. Waiting for water, waiting for coffee, waiting for food, food coming out at different times...Gosh was there anything besides the bacon that was ok? Oh! The water. Once we got it, that is. The hot chocolate had whipped cream...ya think Cook made it? Ha, ha, ha, ha...did I make ya giggle?

Prices ARE gouging (the Market doesn't gouge - it's just costly, as one would expect though). As many above me here have said - skip this place and get the pizza! WAY better for the cost and the taste and even the atmosphere...even though it's literally in the same "room" of sorts, it has a fun vibe. I will review that, later, separately. I hope. It too has its pros and cons.

It's a shame that this isn't any better. It's taking advantage of the campers and it's tacky. It's the only negative thing about Grant's Grove.

So avoid it. Bring food - it's not too hard to live out of an ice chest and have a pizza or a bit of a snack from the market.

I just had an epiphany! Let's send the chef from Restaurant Impossible" in! It needs it! And even if the owners and the management don't deserve it - the patrons DO!

So... you're in the middle of the forest. And you're hungry. Where do you go? Well... here. It's kind of your only option, but that doesn't mean it's terrible.

After wandering in the store for a while, I walked back to the restaurant and was seated within a few minutes. It was relatively crowded (about lunch time on a Saturday), but the service was great. My server brought me plenty of refills, checked on me often and never rushed me. I ordered the grilled eggplant sandwich which was pretty good. I remember it has a roasted red pepper tapenade that was basically heaven. The prices were reasonable, and seriously? You're in the middle of the forest. And hungry.

We should have read the reviews before we stopped by here for a quick lunch on our trip, then we would have known not to come here. Besides the pricey menu, the service is TERRIBLE. I can understand they charge more than usual as the source of food will be more expensive here, however, the service should not be this bad. We came into the restaurant at noon and there were no other people waiting for their food. The guide lady sat us down immediately since there is NO BODY else was waiting and after waited for 10 mins, NO WATER, NO WAITRESS. Both the guide lady and the 'waitress' were cleaning the one table while there were 10+ empty clean tables. I went to the front desk and told the lady that we are ready to order, she did NOTHING! Then, two guys wearing business suits sitting next table were ready for their check, the waitress finally showed up and gave them the check and told us she will be right back with us.....then the two business men said they need another soda, waitress came back with their soda, still ignoring us....then the two guys said they need to get an 'official' bill for their expense reimbursement or something, then the waitress came back with their 'new' bill.....still no food for us.

Finally after 20 mins of waiting, we decided to walk out of the restaurant, the waitress and the guide lady did not even both to say 'thank you' or sorry to us while watching us walking out.....What a TERRIBLE service place. DO NOT GO IN THERE.

There is hot dog stand outside. $3.25 for a hot dog. You can finish in 15 mins and enjoy the nature scene more, rather than wasting your time sitting in a pricey restaurant with no food and poor service.

Had a bit of a wait as there were 6 of us. When we asked what the special was our waitress, Trina, kinda rolled her eyes and said they were out. She never bothered to refill our drinks and when asked for some sugar, got an audible sigh! Food was waaay over priced but after camping for four days, wanted a sit down meal. Wouldnt have left a tip but it was included in the bill. Didn't get a good bye, just a here's your bill.

If you are staying in Grant Grove, I suggest you bring your own provisions, Grant Grove restaurant has horrible food at a really expensive price. If that's not possible, head straight to the pizza parlor in the back of the restaurant and order yourself a pizza and all you can eat salad bar. It's cheaper, tastier, and more satisfying than anything on the regular restaurant menu.

Since this is basically the only real restaurant in the area, I guess they can charge what they want, but it's essentially huge portions of junky food that takes forever to come out!

The first night in town, I ordered the trout amandine based on the recommendation from the waitress, thinking I would be getting fresh local trout. After I ordered, I asked her if the trout was local, and she told me it was farmed trout from Chile! Lame...To make matters worse, the fish was overcooked and dry, and the rice it came with was mushy and bland. A dish that was close to $17! Gimme a break. The only saving grace about the meal was the side of veggies which seemed to be fresh - sauteed zucchini, squash, mushrooms and onion. Since we didn't bring our own food to cook for the trip, we had no choice but to eat at this restaurant night after night, after the trout, I had a meat lasagna which was much better than the trout, but still, it was just average. By the 3rd night we finally wised up and hit the pizza parlor, and it was pizza every night from then on...

However, my biggest beef, is that all of the meals on the kids menu are pure junk! Mac and cheese, pizza, PB&J, chicken nuggets, frozen fish sticks...?! Come on now...It was even worse than the regular menu! We are in the middle of a Sequoia forest celebrating mother nature, trying to teach our kids about a healthy active lifestyle and there isn't a single menu item for kids that has a fresh fruit, vegetable, or whole grain in it? Pathetic!

I added a star because although this restaurant was pretty bad, it was still better than anything else in town...

The Grant Grove restaurant has basic offerings that you'd probably crave if you'd been hiking or camping that day or previous week. Meat, potatoes, beer, pizza... stuff like that. They also had three specials on the dry erase board by the host, which included prime rib. I chose the NY steak done medium rare http://www.yelp.com/biz_…. It came to me like I wanted including plenty of butter slathered on top. The veggies were steamed fine and also slathered with butter. I'm fairly certain potatoes had a good amount of butter in it too. Yay butter. Yay calories.

Suggest you eat in the Pizza Parlor next door.

It takes a long time to get your pizza after you have ordered it, but they have Wi-Fi so it's a good time to check your email.

The pizza was very large, and quite good.

The restaurant next door is OK. The food is quite tasty. The portions were a little small. Service for us was very fast and good.

Great breakfast, great coffee (Starbucks). Lunch not so good, but what are the choices??? Dinner is also just OK. Has homestyle type specials which does make it special. Get there before 7pm to avoid the rush. Service is a little slow but whats the hurry, gonna miss the 1st act of the Opera?

BTW: Breakfast at 7am for you early risers, during the summer, also a expresso bar in the courtyard also open at 7.

The food was just your normal food. It wasn't memorable nor was it horrible. It's what you would expect. I would say the special of the day (fish and chips) was the best meal. The rest of us had burgers...just your typical burger. Oh, service was good.

On a recent trip to SEKI, I had the opportunity to eat both dinner and breakfast here. We had a large group but they had no problem seating us immediately. The dinner menu is limited but they do have choices that satisfied both meat lovers and vegetarians. The dinner special was prime rib but unfortunately they were out of the special. I ordered NY Steak and was actually impressed with how good it really was. Other choices were pastas with meat or without and fried chicken. A few people ordered the Blackberry Pie with ice cream. Our server actually brought an extra bowl of ice cream just for 'the table'. As I mentioned, there was a large group and we each asked for our own check. This was not greeted with a roll of the eyes but a very pleasant 'not a problem'.

Since service was so good we went back for breakfast. Again we had great food options, decent pricing, and wonderful service. Skip the oatmeal in camp if you are in the area and splurge on a hot fresh meal. This may be the only restaurant around, as mentioned by others, but the quality of the food and service is not mediocre or average as you might expect given the remoteness of the area.

The best one could say about eating here is that the restaurant offers decent, hot, prepared food at 6500 feet (whether or not two feet of snow is on the ground), and when you walk outside afterward you'll be in the heart of perhaps the most beautiful forest in the state.

The food could hardly be less interesting, and it's overpriced by any normal measure of things, but considering that you're supporting the parks system and no one has ever come here for the food, you won't actually be disappointed. It's not like you were going to remember the meal anyway.

If you're in Kings Canyon National Park and want a hot meal, you don't have many choices on where to dine. If you've already brought your own food and stove, find a campsite and make your own. If you've not so prepared, you can buy a sandwich at the Grant Grove Market or go to the restaurant. We chose the latter.

The cheesesteak sandwich is covered with a sauce that makes it best to eat with fork and knife. Not bad, but not great. My daughter's corn dog was what one would expect. The teriyaki chicken bowl is nothing a Japanese tourist would recognize as being of Japanese origin, but my wife didn't complain. Lunch for two adults and one child came to $27 plus tax and tip (including softdrinks).

We arrived right when they opened for lunch at 11:00 AM, so service was quick. Our server was nice and attentive.
