I'm a recent college grad and I really like the Green Door. The food I've had there is pretty good, the drinks are generally reseanobly priced, and they always seem to have great live music. I've been there for an 80s cover band, blues band, and a few others. Sometimes they charge $5 cover when they have bands which is kind of a bummer, but depending on who's playing it may be worth it.

Used to be the best happy hour anywhere. Now? Not so much. No deal on drinks and appetizers used to be half off, now it's just some pizza thing. AND they charge $1.25 for "on the rocks" alcohol. Still a good place for dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.

The cover charge is ridiculous! Aside from that the people watching is top notch, the bands are usually good, and the staff are nice. Fun will be had.

I am hesitant to only give The Green Door three stars because in certain ways in deserves four. First, I'll point out that the food is actually not half bad for bar food, and to this day I'll still crave their chicken wings at times. Also, most days the live music is great and even worth the week day cover charge.

Despite these high points the crowd really is all townies, with the exception of a younger crowd coming out for Steppin In It on Mondays. That and, as I mentioned previously, there is a cover charge on weekdays even, which is simply ridiculous in Lansing, especially when they rarely have respectable drink specials.

The only other review for Green Door is from 2006, so I'm going to try to give it an update, as it sounds like they've cleaned up significantly since then. The clientele still has its fair share of geezers and older women in early-years Britney Spears outfits, but frankly, it's a nice break from the undergrad-infested college bars of East Lansing. It doesn't strike me as creepy at all, and I'm definitely younger than the typical Green Door patron.

Green Door no longer has the tobacco-hotbox thing going on (thank you, smoking ban), drinks are normally priced, the live music is great, and the dance floor is usually kicking (and entertaining for people watching).  Unfortunately, I do have to subtract points for an awful beer selection, although it's pretty much par for the course. But I'd have to say my favorite thing about it is that the vending machine in the women's bathroom sells condoms, tampons, gum, and glow sticks. Oh, Lansing... you will never disappoint.

Don't get me wrong, I like Townies.

    And I like Townie bars.

But, The Green Door put a whole new spin on Townie bar.  It has now since cleaned up its act, (eh. well...ok almost) but the Green Door was a faceless building with no windows; a chinese finger trap waiting for you to walk in and get stuck there, wrihing to escape the whisky-breathed affections of some poor tool with bad teeth and a leather jacket, attempting to overcome his midlife crisis.

The Green Door Blues Bar used to be Meat Market central.  There were always a ton of old geezers in there waiting to prey on you, so girls leave the party pants at home.  You'll find mostly Townies (local older blue collar folk, the kind that league bowl on Sundays) and slightly older women dressing in Britney Spears style DEBshop clothes (eh a lil scary), but the Green Door gets its fair share of kickass Michigan bands including Soulstice, Global Village, and Funkilinium.  The music is great, the drinks are fairly cheap, and now they've got a window in front, which makes it a little less creepy.

I would've given the Green Door 3 stars normally, but since they've got new management and cleaned up their act a bit, they get 4 stars.  Just make sure you wash your clothes thoroughly after leaving though or else you'll smell all hotboxy.
