We went here last week for Friday fish fry.  We lived in Appleton for a few months a year ago, but we only went to a few restaurants.  Now we live here, and we wanted to find a good fish fry, so my fiancé asked some people at work, and this was the top choice.
I was a unimpressed with the exterior of the place. Â I was hesitant to go in, because even in our very limited Appleton restaurant/bar experiences, it seems that there are a lot of places where everyone in the bar turns around and stares at you when you come in. Â And then continues to stare at you. Â A very unwelcome "who are you and why are you here?" stare - as if the regulars are there to defend the place against random interlopers /outsiders. Â It's creepy and disconcerting. Â So I was expecting that, and I kind of just wanted to leave. Â Plus it was dark out, and the place kind of just looked like somebody's house, which also put me off.
Anyway - we went in, it did seem that conversation stopped and we got a once over from the bar's clientele, but that's to be expected when the door is right in the center of things.
I was still skeptical when we went in, but the menu was really impressive, I was happily surprised. Â We already knew what we wanted, so we ordered right away. Â There were several options for the fish fry (haddock, perch, cod, I think?). Â Right away, our server (very nice, friendly, attentive without hovering, perfect!) brought us a little basket of bread along with some herbed butter (SO good!), and then our salad/soup. I had the salad and that produce was SO fresh!! Â After shopping frequently at the Madison Farmers' Market - I can definitely taste the difference between grocery store produce and fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce. Â These were definitely fresh, probably local.
The fish fry itself was excellent. Â Once I tasted one piece, I had to eat the rest immediately, because with the fries & bread, I knew I might not be able to finish all my food, and I wanted to be sure I ate all of the fish :)
The prices were INSANELY cheap, considering the quality of the food and the awesomeness of everything we tasted. Â Usually, when it's cheap it tastes cheap, but I would have been willing to spend quite a bit more, after tasting their food.
We're getting married in a year, and we have talked about possibly using their event/caterer services... but we haven't really checked into it at all yet.
Just one thing - there were regular tables & booths. Â The booths were rather small, and since the tables are built in, it's a little difficult to maneuver into the seat - but the place was built in the 1800s and they've preserved it beautifully, it's a historical landmark. Â But if you're with anyone of above average height or weight, I'd suggest taking a table.
