I`m giving this review 2 stars because I was with a party of 10 and the food (we ordered nachos and quesadillas) was decent. However the server was extremely rude and would not allow our party to join tables, so we had to awkwardly sit apart from each other. In addition, there didn`t seem to be a good sense of what was available, as 30 minutes after ordering a beer we were later told it wasn't available. The server also told us after we asked to order drinks that we were "going to need to spend some money" if we were to sit on the terrace. Obviously we were planning to do that as we had already expressed interest in the food menu. Overall, decent food but truly terrible service.
Review Source:We enjoyed the food and drinks here here. We got the Navajo Pumpkin Pasta with Chicken and Red Curry Duck. We walked in without a reservation at about 7:30pm on Saturday night (not knowing this place got super busy) and were not able to get a table. We ended up sitting at the bar after waiting about 5 minutes, which was fine with us. The food was a little pricer than I expected it to be ($20+ entrees, $9-10 mixed drinks) but ended up being delicious!
Review Source:We just had another great meal at the Gypsy Cafe. I've been to this restaurant many times over the last 10 years or so. I figure its time to give a review. The restaurant was fantastic when the original owners opened up but we stopped going when it switched hands. However over the last couple years, it has made it back to our restaurant list.
I've tried the majority of the menu. Here are some of my favorites:
Mezza plate for appetizers
Falafel for lunchtime
Entrees - Curry Duck, Australian spring lamb chop with raspberry chipotle sauce, and the new addition and new favorite dish - ribeye with sweet habanero sauce (if you can handle the heat).
Definitely get the fruit frozen margaritas when you're there, prickly pear and mango are the best flavors.
Yum!
If you pick one place to eat at in Lincoln, pick this place. Â The food is amazing and very unique. Â From the viewpoint of somebody that is an extremely picky eater, their menu can be a bit intimidating, however, there is always something there for me and it is always amazing. Â I always try something new when I go there and have never been disappointed!
For those that have given this place a low rating based on the fact they could not be accomodated due to the restaurant being busy, you need to understand the lay of the land: This is a small town with one main road and a skiing area, some small shops, and some restaurants on that main road with the exception of a McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, and Rite Aid. Â When skiing gets out, all of the cars flood the main road in search of warmth, food, and spirits. Â These businesses have a very small window during ski season to make their revenue as the other seasons after foliage and winter tend to be very quiet. Â I have seen many great restaurants have a hard time making it in the area over the past 30 years due to this reason. Â Heck, there is an entire Mill across the street that used to house all sorts of stores that has many vacancies. Â
There are very few restaurants that have lasted in the Woodstock/Lincoln area and the Gypsy Cafe, thankfully, has turned into one of them.
While spending the week at Loon, I searched Yelp for a good place for dinner and found the Gypsy Cafe. Â Luckily, I read that reservations are a must, so I called ahead and we were sat right away. Â The service was amazing! It seemed like the owner (possibly) was working front of house and she greeted many patrons with a warm welcome and most (regulars) with a hug! Â The decor was imaginative and colorful. Â The food, like everything else, was amazing. Â I had the Thai Red Curry Duck and my boyfriend had the fajitas. Â Everything was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. Â I would highly recommend the Frozen Fresh Fruit Margaritas. Â I had the Mango and it was to die for! Â Smooth and boozy - fresh fruit puree! We plan on going back again before we leave to head home.
Review Source:We've passed this place before and seen the colorful decoration, and assumed it was a tiny off-beat hippie haven. The parking lot had room for only four cars. To our surprise, when we got inside, there were seats for upwards of 80 people, and they were filled, despite being off season. Because of the crowd, the service was not as attentive as we would have liked, and there were two particularly rowdy tables near us, lowering our overall experience. Normally we would factor that into the ratings. However, once things quieted down, and we talked with the staff, we're convinced that this experience was not normal.
The decor was as bright and colorful inside as outside, and the food an eclectic assortment from around the world. I had malai kofka from northern India, which was excellent. I was wondering this was doing in a Gypsy cafe, but after some research discovered that Gypsies actually originated from northern India. We're not sure what would constitute Gypsy food anyway.
One of us is vegan, and there were some choices, although not as many of we would like. They did provide a menu listing which items had dairy and which were gluten free. Among these, the humus and baba ghanoush, two staples that we try almost everywhere, were particularly good. We'll definitely come back and try it another time.
This place is very good. Â All the food is tasty, even the deserts. Â The waitress was sharp and on the ball, and the other people working there were quite nice too. Â It was a Thursday night in March and we had to wait for a table. Â That's a good sign. I will go back next time I'm near Lincoln.
Review Source:Admittedly, this is not a fair review. I haven't eaten here. I did want your attention though so you don't make the mistake we did! We tried to eat here on a Saturday night and were turned away at the door. This place does not save any tables for walk ins if they fill up with reservations, apparently. When we entered the very tiny and busy establishment, we were approached by a woman who asked if we had a reservation. When we said no, she said, well, we are very busy as you can see, we won't be able to seat you. I was really turned off by this so I don't think I'd try the place again, but I just wanted to give the heads up that you should CALL AHEAD!! The reviews claim this place has great food, but it didn't look like much of a cozy sit down place, was very cramped, looked more like a deli, and apparently you are turned away if it is a busy night!
I thought most places saved some tables for walk ins...
Be sure to call ahead if you want to try this place out and give it a fairer review than I am.
A return visit and unfortunately this visit wasn't as good as my previous dining experience. Â The waitstaff has either been increased without sufficient training; or, the original waitstaff has lost some of their shine. Â We were a table of four diners and we had asked for the water pitcher to be left at the table. Â The server couldn't comprehend this request and promised instead to keep filling the water glasses. Â Ahhh, that might have been what we had been trying to avoid.
Second, the server informed us after we had ordered a steak wrap that it wasn't available. Â When she asked the owner if it was available her reply was: "I have no idea." Â Really? Â You have no idea what's available in your own kitchen?
My long bean stir fry with cashews was enjoyable. Â It's too bad however that there must be a shortage of cashews in the nut market because I had only about three broken pieces in my entire entree. Â We also ordered the quinoa fritters with passion-fruit and banana sauce. Â The fritters were interesting if not delicious. Â The sauce tasted like a piece of chewing gum.
There was also lots of loud exchanges between the waitstaff again returning to my question if the waitstaff has changed and not been trained properly. Â Granted, the Gypsy Cafe is miles ahead of the other dozens of restaurants in this ski town in that they serve interesting food. Â However, the owner of this restaurant should be paying closer attention to the service.
Brian is great bartender! Very friendly and fun.. Food is superb!! Â Pretty impressed that a restaurant with such a variety of menu items can execute each dish with much love and care. We had a group of eight, everyone loved each dish!! Bread is exceptional. Mac and cheese divine. Must order soups! Mushroom Brie soup ohmm nom nom yum! Oh yea chili is even better!
Review Source:I tried to check in here yesterday for lunch with my friends, but Lincoln, NH HATES T-MOBILE. Curse you!
On the bright side, this pretty restaurant offers delicious meals and awesome interior decoration for its space. I love the handmade painting on the walls and the colorful mosaic tiles and pieces. Even the bathrooms are nice (did you see their wooden sink?)! It seems like each furniture in the rooms are a piece of artwork to check out for good conversation starters. The menu has a variety of food to check out, and clearly have each cultural influence on the flavors and such.
I had the Gypsy Nicoise and it was a huge and delicious salad! The presentation of it is just as eye-catching. Hard boiled eggs laid into flowering stacks around the plate, stir-fried asparagus, grilled tuna steak that looks like chicken (with the pink middle), red bell peppers, olives (well I didn't eat that because I don't like it), and lime-cumin dressing (in a very cute mini pitcher for pouring). I can guarantee you that it will keep you full and light at the same time!
Had a pretty friendly waitress who helped us with deciding on the meals. Some of the staff were slightly occupied with seeing other people I guess (thing is, when we came in, we were first directed to this one waitress but she was too busy being in a conversation with an another customer...I guess service needs more work), but there were no issue with this one.
Parking is across the street or if you got lucky, some on the same street in further blocks. Just don't park in the medical center next to Gypsy Cafe!
If I decide to come back (whenever that is) for the snowboarding season, I will be sure to make the effort to come back here!
I was passing by the area and decided to stop by Gypsy cafe for a bite to eat. I was extremely impressed with the food selection and the service. Everyone was kind, prompt and polite. The decoration was quite eclectic which added to the general ambiance of the place. I didn't love their mural though but everything else was great.
My entree was tasty and what I considered a very fair portion (for reference, I am not a fan of small portions). The price was very fair. I would certainly consider going again if I were to be in the area and I will certainly recommend it to a friend should they be in the area.
Not so much.
Came here hoping for the ecletic food experience described by the yelp family.
Found the service and food lacking.
Sat outside to enjoy the passers-by and view of the mountains on a nice summer night. Â Even called ahead to place a rez.
Waited fifteen minutes for service before finally being waited upon (moments before getting up to leave).
Truth is - we should have.
After ordering, the drinks were slow to arrive. Â We did not even have water at the table to sip while waiting. Â I would say it was a good twenty-five minutes that we remained without any refreshments of any kind.
A sudden rain storm brought us inside to the bar. Â Even seated at the bar, our second drink order wasn't taken for a good ten minutes while the bartender "caught up". Â
Ended up cancelling our food order since it hadn't arrived after a leisurely sip through our second beverage.
Sadly, not what I was I was hoping for.
I love this restaurant. Â I really, really, really wish they were closer to my home. Â Every meal I've tasted here has been phenomenal. Â The drinks I've had were amazing (I'm especially looking at you Blue Cosmo). Â Do yourself a favor. If you are in the area: GO HERE! Â I would strongly recommend calling ahead to get a reservation since this is no longer the hidden gem it once was. Â Happy to see them thriving, but sad that it means there can be long waits.
For the parents out there, they do have a good kids menu even though it doesn't show on the online menu. Â I can only speak to lunch hours, but they have done a good job of being a little upscale without looking down on parents and kids.
Maybe they should update their Yelp page with their hours. It would be nice if it reflected that they are open for lunch from 11:30 - 4 and then closed until dinner at 5.
We showed up at 4:20 and even though there were diners still eating on the patio, we were told that they weren't serving dinner until 5. Well that was a waste of our time now wasn't it.
Mac and cheese with cranberry sauce, potatoes, and bacon. Do I have your attention yet?
The food reflects the decor perfectly; colorful, bright, bold and creative. Aside from eating the best nachos of my life, the warm welcomes and great service, the food is the absolute baba-bomb! The New England Macaroni and Cheese was something that stood out from the menu where all the crazy ingredients just worked. The pulled pork in the nachos exploded in flavor and the cheese was broiled to a perfect crisp. The sandwiches were just as good as the appetizers, where the Reuben was filled with delectable and juicy meat, and the Zuni Wrap was stuffed with turkey and brought to life with basil mayonnaise, scallions and a raspberry dipping sauce on the side.
I haven't been to a 5-star restaurant in a while, but Gypsy Cafe is my new favorite destination restaurant. The non-alcoholic drinks were delicious (strawberry ginger cooler) and the blueberry soda from Maine was very memorable.
Looking forward to my next New Hampshire trip! Thanks, Gypsy Cafe : )
Book a reservation in advance. It gets booked quickly.
Ambiance: Colorful & international decoration
Food: Delicious. We had the Ethiopian Salmon and the Argentinian Fajitas.
Price: Reasonable.
Service: We sat at the bar. Our waiter/bartender was friendly and prompt. The host made sure people were warm and comfortable.
On a fall weekend last year, we stopped in at the Gypsy Cafe for lunch and a couple drinks. The margaritas mixed up by fellow Bostonian Brian were fantastic! I had a Greek Wrap and he had a Surf N Turf Burger. Both were really good. The whole menu is super creative and has many international influences. We came back over the winter after a day out skiing and had a couple bowls of soup. The mushroom soup was awesome, and of course, we had a couple margaritas to wash it down. All in all, I'd definitely recommend this place!
Review Source:Driving by the Gypsy Cafe, we could tell that this was a popular place to eat. We walked in without a reservation and ate dinner at the bar.
We enjoyed the company of some interesting guests and the bar tender (Brian), and started with the appetizer special, Spanish Meatballs -- excellent. The Zuni Wrap w/ raspberry-chipotle sauce was hands down the best sandwich that I've ever tasted, and the deserts, Flan and Triple Chocolate Trifle were of equally superior quality.
Overall, I have absolutely no reservations about giving the Gypsy Cafe five stars based on quality, affordability, and overall atmosphere; however, I would recommend calling ahead before you arrive.
I came here with friends during the Scottish Highland Games in September 2011. We were a bit disappointed when we arrived and asked if we had reservations (we hadn't) but we got a table in the back room rather quickly. The restaurant is very funky (flying pigs hanging from the ceiling and brightly colored walls).
I had chicken enchiladas and a delicious mai-tai that had me stumbling from the table after the 2nd drink. The prices were moderate. I'd definitely return next time I was in the Lincoln area.
Sure wish I could give 1/2 stars so I could make this a 4 1/2.
Probably the best food we found in Lincoln during an off-season (late October/early November) stay. They were only open from Thursday thru the weekend but was worth the wait.
We started with a minced beef in grape leave appetizer with a chili dipping sauce. Not really dolmades since there was no rice. Great flavor and perfectly cooked.
For dinner we got the Greek lamb chops that were delicious but upstaged by the homemade hummus. Made me wish we'd gotten the hummus plate appetizer after all. Fresh and flavorful. We also got the Tamarind and Basil Shrimp on Jasmine Rice. The shrimp were nicely cooked and the sauce had good flavor but was just a little "muddled". A touch of acid would have helped brighten the sauce.
For dessert we got the Wildberry Pie and the Pumpkin Crisp, both with vanilla ice cream. The pie was delicious with a flaky crust but the pumpkin crisp was the star of the show! In fact, it was the best pumpkin dessert I'd ever had.
There was a nice local beer selection and the Woodstock Red Rack Ale paired nicely with the shrimp entree. The wine list was respectable with some nice choices.
If you are in town and the Gypsy Cafe is open, go!
I went here on a busy Saturday afternoon, looking to get a sandwich for take-out. The place was mobbed and my friend and I didn't have a lot of time, and we were also tourists so didn't know specific places to get sandwiches to go. The hostess was fantastic and checked with the chef, who agreed to let us get take-out even though it was so busy. Thanks! It was worth it.
I had the falafel sandwich, which came with a side salad. The falafels were crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The flatbread was a delicious take on the pita I'm used to eating. The star of the show, however, was the tahini sauce that came with the meal. BEST. TAHINI. EVER. It was heavy on the garlic, with quite a bit of spiciness. I've never experienced anything like it! I would like to buy vats of it and spread it on everything and eat everything OMG.
The side salad was also delicious. It included olives and some delicious olive-y dressing, but I'm not sure exactly what was in it.
Great staff. Great food. Great experience.
Gypsy offered us decent food with a VERY interesting twist to service! As we were seated, we couldn't but help to overhear the ladies next to us complimenting the waitress, the woman that was to be our waitress, too. The ladies were finishing their meal and proclaimed to the waitress "you offered us the best service we've ever had!" High praise, indeed. You can probably guess what happened next. The same waitress:
Made a mistake with our order;
Never brought a requested piece of cutlery;
Never filled the water glasses;
Was slow to bring the check.
Interesting dynamic! Still, we enjoyed the ambition of the multi-cultural menu and the execution of the food. The salads were nicely composed with fresh ingredients and out entrees were good. We would come back but hopefully will not interact with "the world's best waitress."
We had just finished a pretty rough hike and were looking for something... Warm. We picked Gypsy Cafe and started with some hot tea and soup. I tried the mushroom and brie soup based on reviews, and wasn't disappointed. It had a really nice mushroom-y flavor to it, and was creamy without being super thick and heavy. My friend had the chicken chile verde which was ok, but not as good as the mushroom.
The Zuni roll was a hit with my friend. Simple, but had all the right stuff inside. I had the thai peanut noodles with shrimp and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Peanut sauce was nice with some tang and spice.
Add all this to the funky but clean decor and we'll definitely be back.
We stopped here for lunch on our way down from Canada. Drove past the sign, pulled up Yelp on our smartphones, and figured it had to be a better option than Subway or another tired old rest-stop mainstay.
The menu had an excellent selection of tasty food to suit all palates and preferences. I got an excellent Syrian Chicken wrap served with harissa and a fantastic little salad on the side.
My dad's burger came with an unusual raspberry-chipotle mayo-- a house specialty-- that really added something special to his meal. (And made a great accompaniment to his side of chips, as it turns out.)
My mom loved her veggie wrap with sauteed portobello mushrooms, and my brother liked his shrimp pad thai...although the linguini was perhaps an odd choice in lieu of rice noodles.
The ambience here is what really makes Gypsy Cafe great, though. All through our meal I kept finding new murals and mosaiacs to look at on the walls. And the bathrooms have ridiculously gorgeous mosaiac sinks, for whatever that's worth.
I much prefer stopping at quirky local places if at all possible. The ability to find them with a mobile phone has revolutionized travel for me. Rest stops and Roy Rogers no more!
After snow tubing at Loon Mountain, Gypsy Cafe was the perfect spot to get a late afternoon lunch with friends.
The restaurant is a small independent place and quite cozy. We were seated at a table directly next to their fireplace, which helped us warm up after playing in the snow. Another thing that made the ambiance of Gypsy Cafe so inviting was the natural lighting. The dining room we were seated in was surrounded by windows, allowing the sun to shine in. Hand-drawn images of flowers and gypsies covered the walls.
The menu was very decently priced. My friends ordered quesadillas (chicken and portobello.) Be warned they come with jalapenos, so if you can't take the heat, be sure to request to have them left off. Meanwhile, I ordered the turkey burger, which was juicy and flavorful.
The server was very friendly and was quick to keep our water glasses full and to deliver our food in a timely manner.
All and all, Gypsy Cafe was a nice low-key lunch spot for this city girl.
Here I go again wishing that Yelp allowed half-star ratings. I don't like to give 5 star reviews because to me, that means perfection. I really loved the Gypsy Cafe but I can't bring myself to give it a 5 star review and I am not sure why.
My boyfriend and I went there after a 3-hr Snowmobiling tour. He had a coffee, which was just okay. I stuck with water because I had enough to drink the night before. However, we were both very tempted by their wonderful beer options. We started the the vegetable potstickers, WOW! The sauce that comes with them is incredible and the potstickers were a yummy start to the meal. I had the falafel because I was in the mood for it. I did not expect it to be the best falafel ever, and it wasn't, but it fulfilled my craving. The tahini sauce was yummy. My boyfriend had the Tuna Nicoise Salad. That salad was beautiful. The piece of tuna was HUGE. For the price, 12 dollars I think, I expected three bites of tuna, not a dinner size steak! Not only huge, but perfectly seasoned and cooked. The accompaniments were delicious as well.
We did not order dessert but we were very full and happy after our meal at Gypsy Cafe. My biggest complaint was that the floor looked like it had not been cleaned in years! I understand that people are walking around after being out in the snow and that it was the end of school vacation week, but there were food leftovers and sauce that were more than a few days old.
If I were back in Lincoln, I was DEFINITELY go back to the Gypsy Cafe!!
Mushroom Brie soup was delicious,
San Fransisco sandwich ( Portabella mushroom, red peppers etc. ) was tasty.
Chicken souvlaki pita sandwich was delicious too but with only few chicken (4-5 small ) pieces. Came with salad on side. If they would have stuffed the salad in the pita the sandwich would look bigger.
The service was great. The manager ( probably owner ) came twice to ask if we  liked the food.
The ambiance was nice. The decor was apt for the name.
I love this restaurant. Â The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is great- they have a very nice and interesting decor.
I highly recommend the black bean burger and the malai kafta- both of which are vegetarian, but they also have other options as well. Â The salads and appetizers are wonderful, and the desserts are very good as well. Â I come here almost every time I go out to eat in town.
I don't give 5 stars but the food here as well as the atmosphere, reasonable prices and waitstaff are EXCELLENT! We went here twice. Once w/ a big party of 22 and the second time just 3 of us. Both times were super experiences. The art placed around the restaurant/old renovated house are really unique and fun to look at.
If you like spicy shrimp, try the "Caribbean Shrimp" it's amazingly yummy!
Enjoy~
Alright Gypsy, I'm giving you the high 5! (stars that is)
A group of us went back to the Gypsy Cafe this weekend and the reservation was correct, our table was there waiting for us on time and the food is still out of this world amazing. Â We had a party of 7 and all but two of us ordered different dishes. Â All were flat out awesome. Â
The soup of the day always seems to be the brie and mushroom bisque, which I am not complaining about AT ALL because it's just about the best soup I have ever had. Â The red curry duck never disappoints, ever. Â The sangria has a tasty cinnamon kick.
Our server was so nice and genuine. Â Great people. Great food. Great atmosphere. Â What else do you need?
Ahh the Gypsy Cafe. A cute little spot right on Main Street in downtown Lincoln, NH. Â Amazing service. From the bar tender to the waitress everyone is friendly and quick to offer a good suggestion for those looking to try something new. Great selection of appetizers, good burgers and a full bar.
After a day of skiing at Loon Mountain, check out the Gypsy Cafe for dinner. A wise choice.
Gypsy Cafe is one of the more serious food options in a delightful, casual setting in NH ski country. Â Located opposite the movie theater complex on main Street in Lincoln, NH and run by a mother and her son, (mom's front of the house, son is the kitchen). Â The son can REALLY COOK! he is a culinary school grad and travels around internationally off season to do recipe reconnaissance, and comes back with some winners. Â (Mom also speaks fluent French, for those of you from up north)
They offer daily specials based on local availability, and have inventive apps like duck quesadillas, but what stands out visit after visit is their Tuna Nicoise salad (at $11, as  Barry and Elliot would say, it's  wicked under-priced!!)
You get a HUGE chunk of grilled, rare, sushi grade tuna over mixed greens with olives, asparagus , egg, and frisee, but the cumin-lime vinaigrette puts it over THE TOP. Â The Tuna alone would be a $25 entree anywhere in Boston!
And as run-of-the-mill as they may sound, the Calamari are lightly fried in a cornmeal batter which is a divine change from the usual glop they tend to be coated in, and come with aioli as a garlic delivery device, since we all know about the vampire population in cow-hampshire.
they ALSO have by far the most impressive array of tequilas located anywhere north of, Â say, Cambridge, for those of you so inclined, and make top shelf margaritas just like mom used to make ;-)
Wine list is friendly ( I find most wine lists friendly, they always speak to me...)  and well positioned price wise  for the area, ($22-45)
If the rain ever stops, they also have an outdoor deck!
