We moved to Nevada City about a year ago and have been wanting to try the Happy Apple. Â Today we did! Â It was wonderful! Â We sat out on the back deck. Â Gorgeous day to enjoy the sunshine. Â The iced tea was very refreshing and tasty. Â The food was fresh and delicious. Â We topped off the meal with a slice of blackberry pie and a slice of boysenberry pie - both with ice cream. BEST PIE I HAVE EVER TASTED! Â We will definitely be back being local to the area!
Review Source:This place is ok. The food is ok. The staff is ok. The location though, is pretty cool especially in the spring and summer. It's a simple little eatery on the side of the road. They opened a little farmer's market stand and that has brought in more business. They're hours are limited.
Review Source:This place was ok. My husband and I took my family there when they were visiting from out of town and they loved the quaint atmosphere. The food was less than fantastic... (well, mine was anyway) but the milkshakes were great! They have TONS of pies and jams and preserves for sale. It's a cute place to go - the service is pretty good, and maybe the food is better than I think, I'll give it another chance.
Review Source:This place is great. Â You get exactly what you expect here, good quality food and friendly service consistently. It's just a simple, unpretentious, roadside burger restaurant in the country. Â I'm not really a 'regular' at any place, but this is perhaps one of the places I go most often since I live right down the road. Â I like to sit on the back porch and drink Arnold Palmers, especially when the blossoms are still on the apple trees out back.
The home made pies, muffins, and other treats are one of the things that makes this place great. Â I like the Ortega Turkey melt, the Chicken Croissant, the Tuna melt, and they make good burgers too.
The farm stand is up and running now. Â They have apple butter, honey, fruits and vegetables that are grown right there at the farm; great produce and plants for sale.
I love The Happy Apple Kitchen!! The environment is clean and has a homey old time country feeling to it. The waitresses are very nice and the service is excellent. The food is very, very good and I love their menu choices. The owner makes the pies from scratch using an old recipe from the 1800's, and they are definately the best around. My favorite is the French Apple Pie, certainly the BEST. I would definately eat here again and again!!
Review Source:When it comes to roadside businesses, Happy Apple Kitchen is a place where great memories are made! The location is beautiful, the setting inside is inviting, the service is friendly and the food is fabulous.
Stopped here for pie and ice cream during a recent trip -- the third time we've visited but the first time in 10+ years -- and it was just as good as we remembered. Wish we'd come for lunch, the food looked great (and the shakes looked unbelievably good!). Two of us had apple pie and the other had peach. The crust, filling and overall taste was superb. And the service, well, we couldn't have asked for better.
On the way out we bought some cookies to take with us. They were just as good as they looked, and believe me, they looked great.
I highly recommend this as a place to see and experience if you're in the area.
Tiny roadside cafe out in the country, the interior of which feels like a cross between your grandma's house and a log cabin. Â They sell fruit in season and pies/jams/etc. Â Only peaches were in-season on our visit today. Â Our burgers were solid and fresh, but with a somewhat mealy apple slice topping the structural toothpick. Â The Ore-Ida crinkle-fries were over-fried, but the (fresh) peach milkshake was awesome. Â Prices were very reasonable.
Great family business -- I wouldn't make a special trip to eat here, but if I were to get hungry on the Colfax Highway between Colfax and Grass Valley again...
I may be a little partial because the place has sentimental value to me since I grew up close by but I do love this place. I make a point to have lunch whenever I am in the area, which is only once every couple of years. But you can trust me on this...their milk shakes are the best and you haven't had a burger until you have tried their apple sauce bacon burger. Remember, this is just a mom and pop country restaurant but it is very cute, folksy and takes you back to a time before chain restaurants ruled the land. P.S. buy a jug of the fresh apple juice that was made just across the street. Bon Appetite.
Review Source:Had an "Oretga chile turkey" sandwich that was very greasy and had no chiles in it. Â The place was packed, the waitress looked harried and I couldn't get her attention. Â My husband had a burger that was average. Â Didn't try the pie. Â Did mention the problem when we were at the cashier and they gave me a cookie. Â Nice gesture but not a good meal.
Review Source:I absolutely love this place. Every time I come home I make a point to come here for at least one meal. If you can imagine a food with apple they have it, apply milkshakes, apple burgers...Yum! It's especially fun during the fall when the orchards are open and the pumpkin patch is in full swing. They also have their pie and fruit stand open during fall. During the sprng all the apple trees are in bloom and the flowers make quite a scene. It's super quaint and has that wonderful small town, homey feeling. Make sure to visit if your your a tourist or even a local.
Review Source:Hey, this place is pretty good! The prices seem pretty fair for your average side-of-the-road-owned-by-family cafe, and the variety wasn't bad either! Considering that I have 2 gaping holes in my mouth from a few-day-old wisdom tooth extraction, their tortilla soup and apple pie really hit the spot, though I suppose anything that wasn't Jell-O *should* hit the spot.
Review Source:Whoa... I don't doubt they've used canned fruit in their pies, but all the fruit they use comes from their farms. Sometimes, in order to make cherry pie out of season, they may have to use their own canned cherries, which obviously preserve well.
I've actually had the fresh fruit milkshakes here and the sandwiches and think this restaurant is REALLY quaint. Unfortunately, it's no where near me... I've tried it because I have a friend whose family owns a home very close by. In the couple times I've been, I've never had a bad experience with the food and the interior of the restaurant is very country, folksy, and cute. Of everything they have to offer, I highly recommend the fresh fruit milkshakes... killer!
They make "homemade" pies here......so WHY are they using CANNED FILLING in their pies? Â We sampled the Cherry Crunch pie, and although the crust and crumb toppings were OK, the filling reminded me of a Hostess Fruit Pie! Â I counted like 2 cherries in my entire slice of pie......NOT RECOMMENDED unless you love canned fruit fillings!
