Holbrooke Hotel

The food is great and the service as well, but avoid the women's downstairs bathroom.  Something is really wrong there .  It feels weird.  I have been there numerous times and am always inordinately anxious to get out of that space.  Just saying.

We went to the Holbrooke Hotel for dinner on June 26th 2013.  We should have know better when they did not answer their phone and asked you to leave a message and our message was ignored and phone call never returned.  First we stoped in the bar and had a drink,  very watered down, it was the worst drink I have ever had in a bar.  Did not taste like it had any acohol in it at all and waitress took forever to both get our drinks and come back with our change.  We decided not to order any more drinks from the bar and went to the desk to go into dinner.  The same waitress from the bar was asked to show us to the dinning room.  She led us to a hallway and pointed to the end and just said it's down there and turned around and left.  Did not take us to restaurant or show us to a table.  When we got to the dinning room it was empty so we stood there and waited until the waitress came back to find out where we should sit.  We did get a different waitress for dinner who I must say was very nice.  My husband ordered the steak and lobster which he said was good but I ordered a vegetable wellington,  the vegetables that were supposed to be in it were listed on the menu but bell peppers were not listed and it was full of them.   I could have delt with that ok but the puff pastry was terrible, soft, undercooked and I could not eat it.  They gave me a whopping $3,99 off of our bill, big deal.  I feel that anyone that cannot cook can at least heat up puff pastry and the fact that a chef running a restaurant is unable to do that makes me wonder.  I sent an email to the Holbrooke before writing this review listing my complaints but it was totally ignored.  I guess now I know why the restaurant was empty.  Would never recommened this restaurant to anyone.

Lovely old historic hotel, right in the middle of historic downtown Grass Valley. Will return when we go visit our niece and her new baby. Food in the restaurant was delicious. Walking around downtown at the various shops was entertaining. Love this area!
