Visited the Harbor Haus several years ago then just recently. Â Pretty sure it was the same menu. Â Food is mostly tasty but in a time warp....my bet is that the chef went to culinary school in the 80's. Â Portions are WAY too large and as stated, the menu needs to be updated. Â Super view but tacky server uniforms and the place needs a makeover.
Review Source:Full disclosure: writing this on behalf of my upset girlfriend.
She said that the view was beautiful, but the food was overly salty and somewhat greasy. Â The potatoes au gratin were "too oniony". Â But the biggest problem was the duck. Â She's not an experienced duck eater, but odds are it wasn't prepared correctly. Â They tried to feed the leftovers to some dogs, who wouldn't eat it either. Â
Later that night, she became quite ill, with every sign of food poisoning. Â They called the manager the next day, who was rude and said it wasn't food poisoning and that she was going to just get sick anyway - therefore not their problem. Â A little compassion would have been nice. Â Most classy restaurants would have handled the situation better, and my girlfriend was upset that what should have been their nicest meal in the UP turned into a bad experience.
I would give the Harbor Haus 6 stars if i could. Â I had a most delightful meal. Â I've read how others said they thought it was so expensive but, I thought the prices were reasonable for what you get. Â There were several entrees for less than $20. Â I chose one slightly more expensive, the seafood variety but it was worth a little more. Â It included lobster, crab, shrimp, trout, whitefish, oysters and clams with sides of spatzle and fresh vegetables. Â My wife had the whitefish special. Â Our server was very good and started us off with fresh hot bread and a delicious dipping sauce. Â She was helpful in describing the specials and the other things available on the menu. Â She gave us very quick service and was extremely friendly. Â The dining room is very nice and the view of lake Superior is outstanding. Â Our table had a view out the large windows and we got to watch the Isle Royal ferry return form the island. Â As it came close all the servers went outside and waved to the passengers. Â Seems they do that every night. Â That was fun to see. Â I will definitely return here the next time we visit here.
Review Source:We certainly didn't expect this gem in the middle of nowhere, but were very pleasantly surprised when our parents sent us here for a belated anniversary dinner while we were visiting them on vacation. While it wasn't the very best meal we've ever had, it was definitely good food and worth the cost.
The best parts? The service, the Bacon Bloody Mary, perfectly cooked steaks (both filet mignon and bison porterhouse), the vegetable medley, the smoked shrimp appetizer, and the bread and dipping oil.
The good parts? The pancetta spatzle, the blueberry and blue cheese salad, the Belgian chocolate souffle, and pop refills that were only $1.50.
The meh parts? The mushroom risotto (it seemed a little overdone or maybe it sat too long before getting to the table) and the beet salad (it was just a huge pile of beets on a bed of chopped romaine--it really needed some goat cheese or walnuts or something).
Overall, definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Reservations aren't required but are recommended.
First step: don't eat for a few days. Second step: haul your butt up to the edge of the earth, aka Copper Harbor, for a few days. Third step: eat at Harbor Haus. It is a gem of a restaurant! We were a large group so folks tried a bit of everything. The portions: huge. The preparation: meticulous. I felt like there were classically trained chefs in the kitchen and true to the Germanic name, the selections tended toward the northern European with a hearty dose of local. The garden salad tasted like the kind of greens mix you'd get from your mother's garden -- completely fresh. The meats and fish are succulent and savory -- and huge. We all had leftovers which carried us well into the next day (and were delicious heated up - the spaetzle, for example, tasted better on day 2). Order the desserts, they make them by hand while you eat dinner. The chocolate souffle was everything a real souffle should be without being too precious and the berry crisp tasted like summer on a fork.
Review Source:Dinner was great, but we were most excited by the salad that came with the dinner. It was the only salad with romaine lettuce we had in UP. We were craving some cool, fresh greens and we got plenty there. Just be sure to ask for dressing on the side as it was a bit drenched. Â Fish was very good, though was surprised that it had a light breaded coating. Wish we had room for dessert, as they looked good.
Service at front desk was a little chaotic - person assigning seating was also answering all the phone calls, but things calmed down. Nice spot with lake view. Very pleasant
All things are relative, I suppose--if this were in Chicago, it'd get 4 stars. Â Which is nothing to sneeze at. Â German, but with a nod to French, it's probably one of the best restaurants in Michigan, and certainly on the Keewenaw. Â Others have rhapsodized on the food, so I'll just put in my $0.02 to say it's a must-stop; I don't know how I've missed it for so long. Â Expensive for the area, more than affordable compared to equivalent quality in my home town, and nothing was a disappointment on my first visit. Â Go.
Review Source:Amazing fish - both the white fish and lake the trout were perfectly cooked and the portions were happily generous. Â The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the view of the harbor and lighthouse was beautiful on the rainy/foggy day we were there. Â Looking forward to dining here again the next time I make it to the Keweenaw.
Review Source:Best place to eat in Copper Harbor. Â Only place within 300 miles that has a menu not primarily based on the Value Proposition.
Lake trout is a classic. Â Wild game platter is unique.
Get to know the owner/chef and he'll cook with your ingredients. Â If I lived up here with my parents... it would probably be the only place I would eat out at.
We stayed in the crows nest for our honeymoon the night before leaving on the 8a ferry to Isle Royal and the night we got back. Â
The room at Harbor Haus is beautiful!  It is all windows and looks out onto Lake superior.  There is plenty of room to spread out, to  enjoy the view, drink wine and just relax.  The breakfast that comes with the meal the next morning is delicious!  You get to choose from several different options of eggs, fruit, bacon, omlettes etc.  The coffee is strong! and tasty!
We ate dinner at Harbor Haus both nights we stayed at Copper Harbor. Â Each meal was really good and comes with a starter salad + two sides. Â It's a lot of food, but worth it. Â The service was also excellent. Â Our waitress was knowledgeable, friendly and quick to answer all our questions.
I would definitely recommend staying here on for special occasion.
When traveling to the end of the earth, this is perhaps one of the best restaurants in the Upper Peninsula. Harbor Haus is always packed in the summers, for good reason...the culinary offerings are magnificent!
Choose from fish, lamb, duck, beef, venison and many German offerings...my personal fave is Beef Rouladen, Berlin Style, with Braised Red Cabbage, German Potato Salad. All meals should be enjoyed with a selection from the extensive beer and wine list.
Don't leave without enjoying dessert, warm Raspberry Cobbler for two with a Bourbon Cream Sauce. Yes, it says it serves two but I'm selfish, I love good food and I won't share this one, it's all MINE. I recommend that you don't share it either, life's short so enjoy dessert :)
Harbor Haus is a chef owned restaurant dockside in Copper Harbor.  We dined twice there during our U.P. vacation.  The first night I had the griddle whitefish with wild mushroom risotto and the Caesar salad.  The fish was adequately prepared  if a bit bland, the risotto was overcooked and overly salty and the Cesar salad was a tad heavy on the dressing although it at least included anchovy.  My husband had the venison and loved it. The second night we dined there I had the Coho salmon with chili butter, guacamole, redskin potatoes and the Caesar salad.  The dish was outstanding as was the presentation.  No complaints at all. My husband had the Elk and said it was amazingly good. They have a really great wine selection and the servers are outstanding.  It was an unexpected surprise to find such fine dining in this out of the way location.  Also be sure to have the thimble berry cobbler with bourbon sauce, you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:Probable the most famous place in Copper Harbor. Â It is famous for it's female staff going out onto the restaurant porch and every time the Isle Royale Queen ferry comes in the staff will do a dance and bow down and show their "knickers." Â It is a fun tradition and one I hope never dies.
The food at the Harbor Haus is damn good and very authentic, both in the food and drink. Â It is worth a stop if you are just here for the national park or traveling the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The Harbor Haus is famous for its cheese soup, tasty fish (I don't want to say seafood...it's lakefood!), and a taste of solid German cuisine. Â There is a pretty good selection of German beers here, a pleasant atmosphere with a nice view of Copper Harbor. Â The chocolate torte is good, and for entertainment it is a tradition for the waitresses to run outside and do a rockette-like routine whenever the Isle Royale Queen returns to the harbor.
Review Source:Truly a UP-er charm!  And full of childhood memories!  Well it's one of the few Copper Harbor food spots but it would create competition if others existed.  It has gorgeous Lake Superior views, wilderness decor/feel, and a delicious selection of European delicacies.  The workers are always friendly and wearing their lederhosen.  Definitely don't miss out on the fresh seafood and tasteful desserts (like the Belgian Chocolate, Toasted Hazelnut & Frangelico Soufflé for Two with Crème Anglaise).  I definitely get my lingonberry fill here, so you should too!  Be sure to know that they close from mid-October until the end of the winter season!
