Great food & even better service.
Recently attended a rehearsal dinner here and was amazed at the quality of the food provided and the attention from the servers. Â I wish I could remember our server's name because she was probably one of the best I've ever had. Â I'll be sure to stop back by this place again.
I love this place. I always get the filet, but I need to try their fresh seafood and other things sometime. I like the whiskey bread pudding. The filet, a couple beers and that bread pudding ends up costing $40-something. Very good service - the people are very nice. I go back every time I travel to the Evansville area.
Review Source:The Place- Not SUPER formal, but I wouldn't go in jeans. Â Perfect for date nights and family dinners! Â Ambiance: well lit; leaning more toward diner than fancy restaurant.
The Service- Attentive and friendly.
The Food- Â The meat gets 5 stars, especially considering the price. Â French onion soup was a-ok, prime rib was amazing. Â Dinner buddies were equally happy with their filet mignon and surf and turf. Â Wait actually no, the lobster was reported "meh". Â (It's Indiana!) Â Meat was great though; oysters rockefeller and tournedos medallion were both highly recommended by others who'd dined there. Â Calamari appetizer and mushroom side dish both flavorful and done right. Â Good selection of meats and a wide range of prices (meat entrees alone $16 to $40s)
Not sure why people are comparing this place to steakhouses in LA and NY, (I'm from both) as this is Indiana. Â So for what it is, Haub is a prreetttyy good choice!
I'm from LA and I had never really been in the Midwest before. My boyfriend (now husband) at the time took me to this destination steakhouse for dinner. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere and it was most noticeable that this Korean girl was not from around these parts.
You're definitely not there for the ambiance, though it's as Midwest as it gets. I found it rather charming (we don't really get this out in LA). You're there for the meat. My steak was pretty darn good, not the best piece of meat I've ever put in my mouth good but still cooked just the way I liked it. Huge portions.
I like their hand drawn map on their website.
My girlfriend and I were on our way back to Indianapolis after attending a wedding in Evansville. Â We wanted to stop at a non-chain restaurant for a good meal. Â We saw signs for Haub Steak House, and my girlfriend (from southern Indiana) had heard great things about it over the years. Â We checked out Haub Steak House on Yelp, which showed overall good reviews.
The service. Â I was curious to see how the service was because at least one Yelp review commented on poor or "immature" service. Â We thought the service was fantastic. Â The waitress and bus-boy were young but very attentive. Â The food was delivered promptly, our drinks were never empty, and used plates were taken very quickly. Â We had no problems with the service whatsoever.
The food. Â I have eaten at most of the "high class" steakhouses in Indianapolis. Â That being said, I felt that the food at Haub Steak House was outstanding, especially for the money. Â The appetizer of stuffed mushrooms was awesome. Â The salad was average. Â The steak was very tender and cooked perfectly. We highly recommend the twice-baked potato as a complimentary side dish to the steak. Â Needless to say, we were too full for dessert.
I highly recommend Haub Steak House. Â If you're in the Evansville area and looking for a good steak from a locally owned restaurant, the short drive is well worth it.
I might be spoiled by the Steakhouses in NYC. Â I found Haub to be charming and mainly because of the history, but besides that ,I find it to lack at lot for a place with such reputation.
Food was just OK and not amazing or unique; I had high expectations for this place due that I heard so much prior to visiting. Â But it lacked on almost every point.
The service was very immature; and by that, I mean it is run by a staff that probably still in High School. Â Some girl wearing some goth makeup and an attitude bigger than herself. Â I shouldn't critique much, since they were also some nice young kids refreshing the water.
Overall it may still be a good place for an older, local clientele; but maybe not for the traveled one that have experienced some other more fine establishments around the country.
Haub House is an innocuously charming and innocent restaurant in the heartland of Indiana. Â The innocence stems from the post-ironic kitschy decor, reminiscent of my Grandmother's parlour, and the unbelievably outdated menu of steaks, chops and seafood.
Being a child of the 80's (though my parents fiercely clung to their 70's habits of fine dining), I recognized many of the menu items from my childhood - Orange Roughy (now perilously over-fished and endangered), baked scrod (what marketing genius named this fish?), bacon wrapped liver (don't spill any on your polyester suit), sherry with your soup (*hic* I shwear, this soup is the best!), cauliflower salad (gotta watch that svelte figure for Studio 54), cottage cheese and fruit (usually comes complimentary... when you're in the hospital), Â rice pilaf (Joy of Cooking, circa 1971) and oysters Mornay (Troisgros, circa 1961).
I did like my Caesar salad - modestly dressed and crisp, though completed by whole anchovies. Â Some at our table were turned off by the anchovies, but I enjoyed the (outdated) touch. Â
A New York strip, served on a sizzle platter (apropos of the theme) and garnished by a strip of parsley (again, apropos), was cooked perfectly to my requested medium rare. Â However, the quality of the steak was a bit south of what I would expect in America's heartland.
On the other hand, I'm used to my brussels sprouts roasted with shallots (a la Scott Bryan), or perhaps bedecked with puffed rice and oyster sauce (a la David Chang), so I was a bit shocked to receive mine simply boiled and buttered - it reminded me of why I disliked them as a child. Â
While the culinary throw-back stopped just short of a beef wellington or flambe, Haub House innocently slings honest though clunky food. Â For some hearty comfort food or a trip down a culinary memory lane, Haub House delivers.
One of my favorites for years. Â Don't pass up the mushroom appetizers. Â As a side the twice baked potatoes should also be on your list.
Service is great due to many of the wait staff being long time employees. Â
Since the resturant is on Central time we can take advantage of the great early bird special.
Our groups have had dinners there for up to 80 people and the service and food it top drawer.
I was in a hotel a few miles away from this restaurant with some of my husband's family to do ancestry work up across the Illinois border. This restaurant was a great find. It was in a beautiful old brick building (1900ish) finished out to the period of the time. The service was nice and those who had steak in our party said it was really good. (I wasn't hungry so just had a salad.) Everyone was happy with our choice.
Review Source:My girlfriend and I went here as a treat to each other after a few long weeks at work. The greeter was very nice and accommodating considering we didn't remember the time change and showed up over an hour before our reservations. While it wasn't too busy while we were there, reservations are recommended.
The atmosphere was OK. The bar area was really neat but the dinning area which we sat in, the ceilings had water stains around the vents. The walls around the windows looked like no one had tended to them in awhile. The dining area we sat it was spaced apart enough that you didn't hear what everyone else was saying and could hold a conversation without four people knowing your business.
The service was very good, although to get a refill on my diet which they only allow one refill or you get charged for another drink was slow at times. The food was brought out hot along with the appetizers being hot.
The food. My date got a filet and it was very good in her opinion. I got the swordfish which was rather bland and dry. The breadstick appetizers were very good.
Overall my bill for the 8 ounce Filet, swordfish, two sodas, breadsticks and tips was $65.00. Would consider a higher rating but I don't like to pay $25 for a meal which is bland and dry.
The best steakhouse at which I have ever eaten. Who would have thought that out in the sticks you might find a rack of lamb, escargot, oysters mornay, 3-digit wine/champaign, and the list goes on. Haub's is a pearl among swine.
Note:
The price range would be better suited for $25-$35, while a meal can be had as cheap as $15 or as expensive as a month's rent in some places.
