Food was great but really don't understand why the servers don't have a dress code!!! You want to go there for a special occasion and want to wear something nice and your server ask you would like to order as she stands there in her blue jeans & her cut off t shirt. The place should at least have some kind of dress code! Some people come in cut offs and looks life they just got off of their job! I would think Kathy could see all of this! Especially with all the advertising  they do!!!!!

Charming restaurant in Labadie, Mo only about 3.5 miles from Purina Event Center, very convenient for lunch or dinner.  This is a local gem first, so expect burgers, salads, and pasta with a few entrees to keep it interesting.  It gets crowded as it's one of few (only?) nice family restaurants in this area, so your going to be surrounded by really nice local folks.

Big portions on the food (my wife's pasta entree could have fed 3 people), and my grilled chicken breast and vegetables came with a house salad and a side of pasta!  I saw a number of burger baskets go by on the way to other tables, and they looked fabulous.

We sat out on the front terrace and enjoyed the meal amongst the flower pots, bumble bees, and conversation about the local happenings in town.  Service was great, despite being there at peak lunch time, and our iced tea glasses were kept perpetually full.  A nice, happy experience, not a culinary gem, but that's not what you come to this locale for.

Our favorite date resturant.  We first went there 5 years ago on Valenties night when a snow storm prevented us from going down into St. Louis for dinner.  We couldn't have been happier.  The mood is relaxed, the wait staff friendly and the bartenders will make you the perfect martini if you have to wait a minute or two for a table.  The  dark brown wooden walls are covered with paintings from a local artist (all for sale).  We love our children and friends, but this is "our" place for a romantic night out.  The price isn't shockingly high, but it isn't an eat there once a week place either.  The food will not disappoint.  The steaks are seasoned and cooked to perfection.  Get the fried spinich for an appitizer, it's pretty amazing.

I admit that I was expecting to not be impressed with the Hawthorne Inn, especially since we were seated right by the bar, but the dinner and ambiance were great. The bar was nonsmoking and a beautiful dark wood, so we didn't mind looking at it. The servers were super attentive-- maybe a bit too hovering-- but better that than negligence. We ordered salads and chicken for dinner, and it was a B plus. The best part is the spring drive to Labadie, a small town  seemingly in the middle of nowhere. After 30 minutes on the winding road with the hills and forest around we were super relaxed. Oh, and the wine was a generous pour:)

I have written about this restaurant before.  We had purchased two Groupon Coupons worth $15.00 off of a $30.00 meal ticket.  The coupon suggested tipping based upon the gross amount which is fair.

Twice in February (we had 2 coupons that exired 3-6-13) we went to the restauarant and discovered that they unilaterally added a 20% tip to the gross amount.

That may or may not have been the amount that I would have tipped.  Recently at P.F. Chang's I tipped the server 50% because she was excellent.

The service at Hawthorne in is spotty at best, and the wait staff are clearly not professionals.

Sorry but I consider adding a tip which I choose to reserve the right to choose, remember the concept is "TO IMPROVE SERVICE", is just a sleazy way the management uses not to pay their wait staff a wage.

Never again, I will not deal with people who change the ground rules after they are reduced to writing.

Oh neither time did they tell me that they were going to predetermine the tip amount, it just showed up.

The hell with them their food is not that outstanding.

    Dear Hawthorne Inn,

I bought a Groupon, as we like to try new places. By doing so, it gets us out of our comfort zone, not to mention the discount gives us the incentive. First, I really hate it when places who put out the offer, then post restrictions on their front door. In your case, the 20% gratuity on the full amount, and only one discount per table. It makes a person feel uncomfortable presenting the coupon, when it is you who solicited me by signing up for this promotion. You should place all your restrictions in the fine print area on the coupon. I understand some people may not tip on the full amount, but that should be the risk you take putting out the coupon. After all, it is NO longer a gratuity if you mandate it!! When you demand an automatic tip of 20%, the service should be held to that standard. When a server knows that he automatically receives it, what is the incentive to perform? I did see our server by the kitchen with her back leaning on the wall texting right after she dropped off our check saying "I'll leave this here."

Second, you need to implement the old saying in the restaurant industry," If you have time to lean, you have time to clean". Please, go take a look at the things I am about to mention. In the booths- check out the accumulation of gunk, crumbs, etc. between the wall and the naugahyde table cover. This is neglect build up. While there, look at the brass light covers and lamps. Now, look under the booth on the floor. Our booth was littered with napkins and previous debris from the diners before. This makes me wonder about the food preparation area! The artificial tree at the front entrance also needs a bath- check out the dust. Maybe instead of the hostess and the other employee standing at the podium chatting, they could dust it. In all actuality, the whole place needs a good cleaning and maybe some updating.

Lastly, the food. We ordered a BLT Salad to share. My husband had the Cod Sandwich and I the Steak Sandwich. We asked for Ranch dressing on the side. We got it, but the salad also came pre-dressed with the dressing that you use?? I ordered my steak sandwich Med./ Well. By no means should the bun be so saturated with blood that the bun is all mushy. It was like the steak finished cooking under a heat lamp and the blood ran to the bun. *shudder* I removed the bun. The steak meat was tough and gristley. Where was that 20% service to come back to the table and check satisfaction? In closing, I found the Groupon not a good deal in this instance, considering the gas and time to drive out to your place. Kind of a shame...

Good service and good food (smoked trout) at a good price.  Generous portions aw well.  What a fine place this is.

Took winding backroads to get there from St. Louis.  A delightful day.

This place must score nostalgia points for many people, because I just don't get the affinity otherwise. The food is ok. For a $27 steak dinner, I can get much better elsewhere. The $20 sirloin at Tucker's in Soulard is an example.  The drive is nice and the place itself is cool. I could enjoy sitting at the bar here for sure.  I would recommend everyone try the place, if you're in the area. It's decent enough to try, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here for a special occasion or anything.   Our service the times we've gone has been pretty good.

Love this place. The family goes there all the time. A must have appetizer is the flash fried spinach. Not something you can get just anywhere. My favorite inexpensive dish is the steak sandwich. My favorite expensive dish is the Gorgonzola sauce steak. It has a different name than that but I do not remember what it is... all I know is that it is amazing. Best steak I have ever had.

    TERRIBLE SERVICE. HORRID SERVICE.
Bad food.  That's it.  Not even salt & pepper done right.
    BLECH.
I'm all about mom & pop home cooking done right. Trust me. This is NOT IT.  Keep on driving by........

Five of us had dinner here last night.

    It was great!

Excellent food, nice accommodations, and great service!

I wish it weren't so far from us, else we'd make it a regular stop.

I've been here a few times and the food generally is pretty good, certainly worth it if you have a deal to use (which I did).  I had a steak dish (pretty good), a house salad, (also pretty good) and a bake potato.  Is it worth the drive just to eat here?  Not sure I would say that but if you LIKE the drive (hwy T is a favorite of mine) then it's a good destination eatery.  The service is pretty decent if not a bit distracted on this night.

I will definitely be back. Had to wait quite awhile for our salad, and for our dinners, however the wait was well worth it. Delicious pasta special and steak. Portions were good size. I went on a Saturday night and the place was packed for our six o'clock reservations, which are a must.  Maybe it is a good thing this place isn't close too close to my home.  I'd be there much more often.

Been there many times!  Every time I have a friend(s)  visiting from out of town, or want to take a girl out on a dinner date. I take them to the Hawthorne.  Never had a bad meal there yet.  And my dinner guests are always impressed with the meal!  Not bad for a restaurant that's located in a very small town!

This is a place that is as good as it gets. I base my review off of food versus price, selection and service.
The menu has a wide veriety of choices and priced accordingly to the meal. It was so good that we decided to eat there more then one time while we were in town. The first night I had a steak sandwich with sweet patato fries for around $8.00 and the second night I decided to try something toward the top of the menu which was a steak with a mushroom garlic sauce fit for a king, choice of patato and it cam with a large dinner salad for only $25.00. I didn't think that was a bad price for the size of steak we got. It was done to perfection and melted in your mouth savory taste. Everything was hot and the service was superior. The drinks were brought out, the specials were told to us and we didn't wait too long. We were seated right away.
I say The Hawthorne Inn is a must stop place.

We visited here again last night.  We go every two to three months or so.   If you are in west county the drive to Labadie is shorter than going downtown or even mid-town

The food is delicious.  The specials keep the menu interesting.  I have never had any bad food at this restaurant.  We had a seafood pasta special and the Pork Micheal last night and both were very good.  The portion sizes are big enough that we will have left overs for lunch today.

The wait staff really work hard.  The service is terrific and really makes the meal very pleasant.   They really do a good job in balancing good service and not hovering.

My only complaint is the parking.  It is very limited in front of the restaurant and only one handicapped parking space for the entire parking lot.  So if you are disabled and unable to make the long treck from the far away street parking or other lots or unable to navigate over asphalt filled with potholes, this is will not be your go to restaurant.

It fills up in the evening so reservations are really the only way to go.

I debated over writing this review because I know Hawthorne is so far outside of St. Louis. That being said, I figured that if anyone was in the mood for a nice detour the drive to Labadie is pretty and Hawthorne just consistently delivers great food and service.

My family and I have been going to Hawthorne since I was seven. The staff is friendly and helpful, and if you go there often you get to see a lot of familiar faces. The place is large and has a rustic feel with a large wooden bar, big tables and booths, and paintings by local artists.

Even though everyone goes to the Hawthorne for their steaks, which are some of the best I've ever had, the Chicken Christine is my go-to: it's a breaded chicken breast covered with melted provel, broccoli and mushrooms in a lemon butter cream sauce ($18.95). I don't know what they put into that sauce, but it's to die for.

The entree price includes a salad and a side. Their Caesar salad with house-made croutons is right up there with Charlie Gittos in the list of my all-time favorite Caesar salads. Not to mention that their vegetables are crisp and fresh (we're talking broccoli, zucchini, carrots, roasted red peppers) and their white shell pasta is also pretty killer.

I usually top this all off with a margarita, and this isn't some watered down drink so just one is pretty much all you need.

Overall this is a place that makes your food from scratch the right way, serves drinks with a proper amount of alcohol, and offers up really good cuts of steak cooked to perfection. It's nice when a good place stays good and never disappoints.

Amazing food.  Even though this place is a little off the beaten path it's totally worth the drive.  We went on a Friday night and the place was packed.  There is a cool bar area where we had a few drinks and appetizers while waiting to be seated for dinner.  Our food was amazing- I had the stuffed chicken and it will be hard to try something else next time I visit.  The dinner prices match higher end restaurants, but the drinks and apps were reasonable.  Will definitely be back!

Amazing that in a little wide point in the road that a restaurant like this could exist.  Very nice space (though smoking at the bar is very annoying, come on!).  We were staying some distance away at a cabin in Marthasville but made the 30 minute drive.  My gf and I were glad we did and especially glad they were open on New Years Day for dinner.  Great service, delicious salads, and by all means, get the pastas, in whatever guise you prefer.  Delicious - and huge.  Definitely recommend!

Hawthorne Inn is definitely a hidden gem.  If you're in the area or are willing to make the drive, do it!

Two trips ago and beyond, Hawthorne Inn would have gotten 5 stars.  One trip ago, they would have gotten 3, because they took my beloved Stuffed Filet off the menu.  It still isn't back, but their beef tenderloin special made up for it on our most recent trip, getting them their 5 stars back.  Lucky for them as I'm finally reviewing this place.

Hubby and I met my parents and a couple friends of theirs on a Friday evening for my dad's birthday.  The dining room was surprisingly empty for the Hawthorne Inn.  Granted, by empty, I mean the tables weren't all filled until 7:30 or 8 when the place is usually packed to the brim at like 6.  The hostess pinpointed the cause - the start of hunting season.  Ah ha!  Let that be a tip for you!

We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and toasted ravs for appetizers, and they were delicious!  We usually don't go for apps, because there's always so much other food, but I'm glad we got to try them.

The salads are pretty stock house style but good.

For entree, I ordered the special - a beef tenderloin stuffed with gorgonzola cheese and bacon topped with some delicious sauce concoction and mushrooms.  I also got to have a bite of my husband's Tenderloin Labadie.  Both were melt in your mouth, perfectly cooked specimens of beef.

I am NEVER let down by Hawthorne Inn's steaks.  I haven't tried any of the chicken dishes, but they sure don't sound like they'd disappoint and they're good enough for my dad, who is totally a beef man, to order 90% of the time.  I've also tried the Tilapia Florentine the night they took the Stuffed Fillet off.  It was good, but I was too pissed about the fillet to really enjoy it.

I'm usually too stuffed for dessert, but we have passed around the birthday brownie on a couple of occassions.  It's quite good, but I'm told that the pies are EXCELLENT.

The prices, for what you get, are quite fair.

Wow! You want to talk about a place that will sneak up on you and blow you away? This is it. This was my second visit and I can't believe how phenomenal the Hawthorne Inn was again! I was on my way back from a sales call at the Ameren-Labadie Power Plant today. The town of Labadie, MO which consists of a one block Main Street is as off the beaten path as you can get. The Hawthorne Inn is so worth the trip. Good luck finding it! This would be a great place to take a Sunday drive to in the fall. Stop by Purina Farms and then mosey on down to The Hawthorne Inn to relax in this tiny hamlet and treat yourself to a hearty meal.

The menu is a cross between The Hill and a gourmet bar & grill. The portions are enormous and the quality is unrivaled. I ate the Hawthorne Salad which was a perfect version of a St. Louis style Italian salad tossed with Parmesan and provel, salami, tomatoes, pimentos, and red onions. It was huge and it was superb! My client ate a club sandwich which could have been the basis for a complete episode of Man vs. Food. He fumbled the contents of the sandwich all over himself which I consider a compliment to the sandwich. There was just too much stuff stuffed into this sandwich to keep it contained within its bread.

The staff was very attentive and friendly. The decor definitely fit the neighboor hood by being rustic without trying too hard. I can say with 100% certainty that I will eat at the Hawthorne Inn every time that I have the chance when I'm in the area. I plan to go out there for dinner sometime soon as well. Do yourself a favor by stopping by the Hawthorne Inn if you are heading to Washington, Union, Gray Summit or beyond. You will not be disappointed!

My fiancee and I were driving around after selling our tool tickets for the night ( i was really sick). We decided we would go to seamus because I have been on the quest for the BEST burger in this state.
Well little did i know after driving for half a hour we pull up to the Hawthorne inn.
I was not pleased at first, the scenery was so-so a bunch of bikers were pulled up at the Inn yelling and scrambling around.
I turn to my fiancee and my face goes from excited to really where did you bring me?.
The Inn is located in a small town of labadie Im not sure if thats how you spell it but across the street is the main strip which consists of a small market deli a doctors office and thats about it.
We walk in and it  was really nice it was decorated as you would think neutral colors a pretty hand painted mural on the wall, wooden floors.
We were greeted right away and we sat in the bar area as we are both smokers . The menu for lunch is a good fair nothing exceeding 20$ and a burger is 6.95 an extra 75 cents for bacon or cheese.
We start off with there potato skins which were around  6$ and let me tell you they were the BEST potato skins ive ever had!!
The cheese was a blend cheese and the bacon was smoked the skins were hand cut and HUGE it was heaven!
Then our burgers came out  They came out on homeade rolls
the beef was amazing well done but still juicy and not dry we added bacon and cheese and when you bite down you could taste every flavor it sincerely exploded in your mouth.
Seamus has nothing on the Hawthorne inn burger this is the best i have had.
It was a amazing experience from the friendly attentive servers to the amazing vibe and the best burger i have ever had. I cannot wait till we get to go back!

Many specialty dog shows are held in Gray Summit, MO because of Purina Farms.  It is a very nice, large, and lushy green property that is somewhat central as far as the dog shows go (12-18 hour drive for most people, except the ones on the West Coast).  While I was at a specialty show here in May of 2007, my friends and I went to the Hawthorne Inn just about every single day - no joke.

The Hawthorne In is located about 15 minutes from Purina farms on a windy country road.  Be careful, you may get lost.  Even though I didn't drive, we still got lost every time we went.

On my visits to the Hawthorne Inn, I got steak or pasta.  The steaks was absolutely flavorful, and the portions are big.  Not as big as portions in Texas, but enough enough to satisfy me plus my dogs in my tow.  My dogs also got everyone's leftover steaks (which I actually ate some of myself it was so good!).  My dogs were giddy when I would come back to the hotel room at night with Styrofoam boxes of yummy goodness.

If my memory serves me right, this place also has some of the richest and creamiest pasta shells and cheese known to man kind.  Just thinking about them is making my thighs expand.  I better stop thinking about it.  Oh, so good....... yet so bad.

However, the creamy pasta isn't the most Yelp-worthy item the Hawthorne Inn boasts.  As a self-proclaimed Philly Cheese steak connoisseur, I ordered the Hawthorne's cheese steak.  I will add that I've eaten philly cheese steaks all over the country - quite literally.  I've even had Pat King's and Geno's in Philadelphia back to back in one night. 2 Cheez wit please.

Hawthorne's places in the top 2 best Philly Cheese Steak ever.  The delicious sandwich was served on a perfect hoagie bun - lightly toasted, crusty on the outside.  For those of you don't know, this part of the country is known as cattle country, and cattle it is.  There was no thinly sliced steak here.  My favorite sandwich here was filled with perfectly grilled filet mignon.  This filet mignon like the other steak dishes at the Hawthorn - incredibly tender that no knives are needed.  It was thick cut, flavorful, and perfect with the melted cheese.  I bit into my perfect sandwich, and I was in Heaven.

I had made the commitment.  One bite, and I had to eat it all even though we had an expensive banquet buffet dinner in only 6 hours.  Very rarely have there been foods to give me what I call mouthgasms.  Use your imagination.  This was one of them.  Tender Filet Mignon, melty gooey cheese, grilled mushrooms, on a crusty hoagie bun.  I better stop thinking about it or else I'll have to drive to Missouri tonight to get one tomorrow.

Oh, and FYI, the Hawthorne is closed on Mondays.  Prices are very reasonable.  I got the pasta shells and cheese as a side during my last Hawthorne's meal, and I ate it at 4 am at a rest stop somewhere in Texarkana.  It was still soooooo good.
