OMG, hahaha, this place is real fun, and down to earth! Went there on a whim about a month ago with a friend, on a night that some punk bands were playing, and man we started our own little mosh pit. I ended up tearing his t-shirt clear off his back! lmfao! The food is great too, btw. Like, get hammered, a hangover, and food all in one night, one place. lol!
Review Source:Wow, I guess the majority of people who frequent this place aren't yelpers... I enjoy a beverage here often enough to be able to say that some good changes have been made. Â It seems like the staff really care about the place that they work... they have some pride! Â In general, all the girls are great behind the bar, but they also don't take any sh%t from some of the locals that can get a bit tipsy. Â They have someone new booking music, so I'm looking forward to some fun nights WITHOUT a cover charge this summer.
Review Source:Moved over to Ben Lomond in August and me and the missus have visited Henflings about 7 times now. Was there last night and they have expanded their menu quite substantially. They now have an expansive offering of pub food (Burgers and Fries have always been really good) as well as steaks and mexican food. Had some great enchiladas and fajitas on our last visit. The staff have always been really friendly to us. We're not bikers, but just average 40 somethings and have never felt ill at ease there. The local crowd has always been friendly, and I would recommend Henflings as a place to grab some good food and some good drinks and enjoy the vibe.
Review Source:DIVE BAR ALERT
Pluses: Â great music lineup with reasonably priced and often heavy-handed drinks with pretty good bar service if it's not hella busy.
Minuses: Â It's small, smelly and incredibly run down and charges a cover for most bands. Â I don't mind supporting local music, but it's usually not worth the cover. Â Plus, while it's not necessarily Henfling's fault, the crowd seems to get seedier and waaaaaaaay too drunk as the evening goes on. Â Fall down slobber drunk...almost all the time there are at least three or five of them. Â Seems Henflings doesn't often exercise the right to refuse service to anyone. Â
Tip: Â Go early, have a drink or two to catch the first set of the band then beat it outta there. Â Things can get creepy.
This place is a consistent solid three stars. Â So why did I give five in the review? Â Well they have a new cook and the burger was done to perfection and one of the best I have had in a long while. Â He also put out an exceptional FRESH calamari.. Â Yes, Calamari in 'Fling's and fresh, who would have thunk. Â
Just don't go with high expectations or a predisposition and you'll have a good time. Â The drinks are priced right and large and if you want a good top shelf margarita.. Â ask.. you may get barked at as they do take some work but worth the attitude and the wait. Â Good draft selection as well. Â Nice to see more than Bud or PBR on tap. Â
We don't stop here all the time. Â Nice spot for a lunch and pint during the week. Â Won't break the bank. Â Enjoy
It is was it is folks.... Â And as far as dive bars go it's the BEST.
Very safe too. And BTW the bartenders there have always been bitches.
Oh well. Â And it changes on the weekends. The crowd comes from San Jose, Santa Cruz, etc and gets a little trendy like unless it's a biker run. Best if you go during the week.
JD's review was spot on. Great point! That bartender is a complete BITCH and it wasn't just a bad day for her. I've received bad service from her on more than a few occasions. Maybe it's because I'm a cute girl with my own nice rack that she's simply put off by me, but hey, I've got money in hand and I just want a damn beer! I've been a bartender before, so I do realize how simple and easy popping a top in a dive bar can be. It's not as if she's in danger of customers requesting blended strawberry daiquiris! Geesh! To men customers, I suspect she just enjoys showing her disdain for tourists or otherwise non "regulars". So by now you may be wondering why I frequent this establishment at all ever, despite the service. That's a simple and easy answer: For the bands, the music and the atmosphere... and because it's a great little dive bar and I'm an incorrigible dive-bar-aholic :)
Review Source:Great biker bar with one of the BEST kitchen's around. Â Every item on the menu is fantastic and is relatively inexpensive. Â I don't go there for live music anymore as the local music scene has pretty much evaporated but I like coming here on weekends to catch a game and have some of the best cooking in the area. Â
Everyone is very friendly here regardless of what you may think about bikers.
I've always like Henflings... I'm stoked there's a place for bands to play and a bar in Ben Lomond... but I'm giving them a one star for a wake up call based on one main thing: the bartender.
I went last night and $8 cover charge to get in to see 3 unknown bands is pretty ridiculous. $5 would make way more sense.
And when you pay $8 to get into a bar, you'd at least like to think that the bar tender, in this case, the chick with huge tits and full tattoo sleeves, would actually get you a drink when you're waiting at the bar with money in your hand.
Nope, instead, she just sits outside smoking a cigarette shooting the shit with the valley bouncer type dude.
Could you at least put your cigarette down, come in and get me a beer, and then go back out and finish your cigarette? I ended up just giving up after getting tired of waiting and leaving.
If I were the owner of this place, I'd have a good chat with her. Wait, no, actually, I'd fire her, big tits or not - she's there to sell and make drinks.
Grizzled mountain men, hardcore bikers and loud music is what you WILL encounter at Henflings. Then again, the regulars wouldn't have it any other way. This place is not for all you namby pamby, highfalutin cocktail loving folk but rather, it is for your tough as nails, just rode in on my chopper, biker gang sort of folk. That being said, however, I have yet to come across anyone here who didn't go out of their way to make you feel welcome; this is the Valley after all, and in the Valley we look after our own.
Okay, so if you do find yourself here, just get a beer (or 5) and enjoy the music and clientele, just make sure you're not caught staring (I won't be held responsible for anyone who gets a bar stool smashed over their head, haha, just kidding). Anyways, I digress, the prices are reasonable and the location is perfect for just such a dive bar, right in the heart of B-Lo.
All in all, Henflings is a perfect example of the biker's biker bar. Then again, the staff and regulars will make you feel welcome should you decide to forgo the pseudo-swanky Santa Cruz bar scene in favor of something different.
So I know that it may be a little intimidating to go into a Dive Bar for the first time and not understand the following or atmosphere or whatever, but get over it. When I walk into a place like Henfling's, I do not expect them to charm the socks off me. I know that they are there to supply a place to get away. No nonsense. Have your drink and lose your worries/weights of the day. They happen to offer lunch if you need sustenance. It is a great deal! $4 for a cuban chicken sandwich that surprised the crap out of me. After a morning of hard labor, do yourself a favor and grab that chicken sandwich and a Lagunitas IPA on draft and chill the 'F' out. Henfling's sure has character!
Review Source:Went here once, just once, to watch my good friend's boyfriend's cover band play some songs. Pretty alright place although the crowd was definitely the mountain type of older folk you find in Ben Lomond.
I'm not sure why I had so much fun other than the fact that one old man in particular kept trying to dance with my friend and get all cozy with her while her bf was drumming away rock hits from the 60s and 70s.
Also had an enjoyable time because during a break my friend and I sat in her car in the parking lot and blew smoke out the cracked windows and no one gave a hoot. But then again it was raining and absolutely no one walks around Ben Lomond at night because there's what, 100 residents? Maybe a couple more, who knows?
I went to Hefling's to see my most favorite band ever play. This was my first time going, and I had heard stories so I was a little worried.
The no parking spots really sucks. I had to park across the street in the Market parking lot (and was scared this would be the one time I would get towed away). Walked across the street and go inside, it's not too bad. Small, of coarse, but they have a nice set up with the stage, the bar and tables to sit at during the shows. Drinks aren't too much (5 bucks for a sex on the beach and 1.25 for a soda? hell yes!), and the bartenders are super nice.
Although it is very small, for what I'm used to I will go again. The outside area is to die for, so many places to sit down and relax for a minute. The decor inside is pretty neat too, it would take you forever to read all those dollars.
Previously I had written about Fall Creek Park, the best thing to show out-of-towners if you want to impress them with Santa Cruz's beauty. Â
We now turn our attention to the best thing to show out-of-towners if you want to press upon them with the full truth about the Santa Cruz Mountains and that is, as my high school government teacher summed it up, that if you took away all the trees you'd realize we're living in a ghetto.
Maybe it's because I have never gotten the appeal of dive bars. Â If all you're looking to do is drink cheaply then why not stay at home and do it? Â You'll find this place PACKED with the real *ahem* salt-of-the-earth. Â It's all those people who've never seen the need to escape the valley for at least a little while, prematurely aged by a lifetime of hard-livin', and the next generation as it makes its way towards the same fate.
People say they like the music and I suppose if you want to see your friend's band then this place is perfect for you. Â However you should be warned that your friends band is going to be playing a lot of Sublime-styled relaxed funk-rock and everyone around you is going to LOVE it. Â So if you want to be the odd one out saying, "why are you all skanking, this music is actually pretty crappy and uninspired" while everyone else sings along to the chauvinistically prideful and willfully ignorant songs about how great the valley is, well then, you will be mighty pleased.
I only give this more than one star because of its excellent use as an object lesson in what the valley is all about and the fact that yes, it is cheaper to buy drinks here than in a place where you can talk to attractive people and avoid having your teeth kicked in by white supremacists.
The moment you walk in this place, you get what is so Enticing about  [QUOTE] dive bar [UNQUOTE] places.  Sheer perfection of the genre.
Relaxed, good staff - dark, but not dank (which is rare in Ben Lomond, where everyplace seems to have some amount of icky black-moldy smell) - better selection of brews (and decent cocktails) than most - a authentic feel of history and nostalgia about the place.
Best of all, they book great musicians; I got to see Big Sandy & his Fly-Rite Boys at this intimate venue.

We played a show here on Tuesday night. Â It's a good sized bar with a decent stage setup off highway 17. Â It's definitely a place that has a strong local following. Â They were very old school, and fun to be around.
I was super impressed when we got some cash from the bar. Â I guess they share revenue with the band, which is very rare. Â They also have a cool sound guy who helped us out a lot.
I'd definitely play here again, and probably will on a weekend in the near future. Â The drive to and from SF is too much to do on a weeknight.
Every time I go to Henfling's, I tell myself that I am there to listen to the music and I WILL NOT spend the whole time outside smoking cigarettes with oldtimers and being called little missy. But  I do it. There are some great bands that play there too and it's worth the drive if you have a designated driver.
