Food is Good; fairly priced. . Nothing really sexy or exceptional about this establishment. Â It does have a 'family owned' type atmosphere..good for a larger group with outside seating. Â The staff is generally friendly...it's clean... plrices are reasonable.
Bar customer service average...the lady helping looked overwhelmed...they guy seems to be on the ball.,....More of a beer & wine place...with limited selection. Â No drink menu; however, they did offer a special. Â I'd stop in again at a whem; .but wouldn't seek out this place for a planned trip or to meet someone for drinks or dinner.
Yelpers you let me down on this one. This place is completely overrated. Went for lunch- woman behind the bar was very rude and ordered me to "take a menu and order here but help yourself to the water back there and go get you food over there when this vibrates". Ok, I can deal with that. But the food was equally disappointing. A tasteless salad with goat cheese - nothing special- and the Mahi Mahi I added extra was not cooked.
Boo Hondos!
First things first, my yelpers--this place is not a restaurant, it is a BAR. Don't be fooled when you Google "Best Restaurants in Fredericksburg" and Hondos pops up. It is a straight up, dive bar with self service ordering, and the worst station to "pick up your food" I have ever seen.
Came here with my family while staying in Fredericksburg in search of dinner. Was a little put off with the "order your food at the bar" set up, but decided to keep an open mind. Placed an order for salads, chips, and burger (there were 4 of us), paid, and sat down with our buzzer. Â We must have gotten up about 15+ times to get our drinks, waters, utensils, missing condiments, appetizers, and entrees as everything came out one...at...a...time...oh...so...slowly.
The worst part of the experience was that the girl behind the bar forgot to ring in one of our entrees. When I went up to let them know, the manager simply said "everyone makes mistakes", which is true--but she didn't bother to put a rush on the food (or really apologize), but rather let us wait another 20 minutes, until I finally went to the pickup station and stood so they wouldn't forget about me. By this time everyone else is finished with dinner and ready to go.
Bottom line--make this a casual lunch spot (or grab drinks here) but do NOT go here for dinner!
We were in the middle of driving from a strawberry patch to pick strawberries with our kids and decided to stop by Hondos. It is a little gimmicky, but the food was great. I have the chili cheese burger and it was amazing. That with a cold Lone Star hit the right spot on a Saturday afternoon. After that we were set for Luckenbach and driving back to San Antonio.
Review Source:Stopped by here for an early dinner after a day of wine touring. My fiance and I shared a bacon cheeseburger which was fantastic! Their burgers are huge, so you might want to share - that includes the fries too. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing, especially if you can find a place on the patio. Their margaritas are also really good, but pretty expensive. I travel all over the country and $12.50 is pretty steep for a dive bar margarita. The service is okay. I don't mind the self-serve atmosphere, but the staff isn't too friendly. Overall, a great place for a good burger and margarita.
Review Source:On our first trip to F'burg, we decided to stop in to Hondo's, mostly because we had our dog with us, and the patio was canine friendly. Â The patio was large and not too over crowded. Â The busser, as Hondo's is "self service" this is the only appropriate calling for the girl roaming around picking up trays, brought cold water to our dog, which I found very endearing. Â With our food ordered and drinks in hand we waited. Â At 430pm on a Saturday, we didn't figure it would take long for the one burger and fries, but 20 minutes later our buzzer went off. Â I had the green chili burger and my girlfriend, the fries. Â First the food: it was a pretty good burger. Â The bun was actually great, soft on the inside and golden brown on the crust. Â I like green chili burgers, but have had better in New Mexico. Â The green chilis were in some sort of mayo sauce that I didn't really enjoy. Â My girlfriend's curly fries were quite delicious, if a little on the soggy side. Â The meal cost over $15 for what was literally a burger, fries and a Sprite. Â This seemed expensive to me. Â I can get showstopping burgers in LA and NY for less and mine was the average on the Hondo's menu. Â I remarked about this and said it seemed a little odd in this day and age to not get some sort of side, ie chips, fries, salad or even pickle, for a $9 burger. Â I can't speak for the service because there is none. Â When I went to the bathroom there were a group of younger people wearing Hondo's shirts, I assume staff members on break, sitting at the table next to the hall leading to the toilets swearing loudly while several families with small children sat nearby. Â Without getting into a moral argument over young people and swearing in a "bar," I found it a bit inappropriate with families present on a Saturday afternoon as opposed to late Saturday night without kids around. Â And sitting on the patio and given this is Texas, we dealt with the bugs and assorted other flora and fauna on the patio. Â The clientele were all very friendly, friendlier than the staff, and I don't know if that's due to being tourists or locals. Â Either way, if I need a bite, I know the food is alright, but I wouldn't expect much more from Hondo's. Â Perhaps it's a better nightlife venue.
Review Source:The only good thing we had was the margarita. Â The Blue Ribbon Bacon Burger was a hockey puck with dry stale bread. Â My wife's green chile quesadillas were left after two very greasy and dissapointing bites. Â Would not recommend Hondos to my friends or family. Â Bad food and bad experience.
Review Source:We came on 1/3/12 for a late lunch. You order at the bar/counter then get a beeper and when it is ready you go get your food from the window. The staff was very helpful in explaining where to find things. We each ordered a burger. My fiancé ordered the donut burger and I got a bacon cheddar burger. I am a bread person and oh my goodness the bun was delicious!! We ordered some onion strings which come with dipping sauces. The fireball ranch sauce was perfect. We easily could of shared a burger they are huge! There is a large outside patio and a stage for bands. We definitely will be back in the summer to have dinner, sit outside and listen to some good music in Fredericksburg!
Review Source:This place is definitely a tourist trap, but with really good food.
I don't appreciate the whole "self-serve" restaurant atmosphere, and when I got up to the front of the line to order our meal, the woman said, "Is that all? Do you want anything to go with that? A side order maybe?" I ordered the "3 Crunchy" side, thinking that I had not ordered enough food. An brisket plate, cheeseburger, beer and appetizer, with NO service, cost 36 bucks. Oh, and there's a big pitcher for tips right there, while you pay, so I dropped 2 bucks in, because I felt stupid NOT doing that. (It's not like they do anything for you, so why on Earth did I leave her a tip??) My bad.
Anyway, the food was really good. Hubby loved his brisket (that came with potatoes on the side) and my cheeseburger was excellent, but all-in-all, it was just this one time we would go. We will probably not ever go back...
It doesn't get any better than this!!! Â Music is always great. Â The food is very good. Â We don't miss a Sunday with a sandwich or salad and great entertainment with Melissa Weatherly and "Any Given Sunday". Â She and her partner Bryan sing great gospel and uplifting music. Â Topped all this off with a good menu and good food.....it doesn't get any better!
Review Source:My friend and I ordered the Chick Fried Steak and Blue Cheese Ribbon burger. The Fried steak is crispy and tasty and Blue Cheese Ribbon Burger, OMG, it was awesome! Highly recommended it.
The onion strings are ok, a big soggy.
We also had Jalapeno Margarita, I'm not a big fan of it, like it sounds, it is spicy Margarita.
I missed the live band because we have to go, but I will be back.
So, I had heard of Hondo's before, it had a great rating on Yelp and friends recommended it.
It has a great atmosphere, really relaxed and laid back. They have live music and a nice patio. I really enjoyed just hanging out, having a beer and enjoying a relaxing evening.
Everything ont he menu looked great, so my boyfriend and I both ordered a big burger (they're huge, even if you're hungry you can probably split them with a side of fries) and some cheese friends. Everything looked and tasted fantastic, but had to take half of it to go.
I don't know if we ate too much of if the kitchen was having a bad night but we both had stomach problems throughout the evening and still felt a little queazy the next day. This is why I only give them two stars. Loved everything about the place but I don't know if the after affect is worth it.
I'm not sure what it is but most places in Fredericksburg seem to have a "serve yourself" kind of manner. I have to say I don't really like it. Â
we sat out on the patio, which was nice. went inside to order food at the bar, pick up our food at the back in the kitchen. their jalapeno margarita was strong and good. really excellent sweet potato fries but the rest of the food was just eh. Â don't even bother ordering a salad here, not sure what I was thinking doing that. you might want to stick to their burgers and fries. I really liked their live music set up and patio area. would go back for drinks and music next time.
Jalapeno margaritas. Need I say more?
They make their own infused simple syrup for these bad boys, and if you like the slightest amount of kick, you'll enjoy these.
For food, you can't go wrong with anything that has chili in it, a burger, the cheesy shrimp appetizer, or anything fried. I even had a salmon salad that was fresh and tasty, although it's really hard ordering a salad at Hondo's with all of the other tempting options.
Hondo's is the type of place you can hang out at forever. You might have to fight for a table on the patio, but you should, because it makes the entire experience. Always live music, always a packed dance floor, always a bachelorette party, always good people watching.
I would be sad if I took a trip to F-burg and didn't visit Hondo's. Don't make that mistake.
Great food out in the hill country. The family and I stopped here after trekking out at Enchanted Rock. Totally amazed at the quality of the burgers, delicious. Id go for the BBQ and bacon burger again, the wife had the chicken fried chicken sandwich, and it was enough for two. Definitely be back again next time we are out this way.
Review Source:Tourist trap, I guess. Â
Ordering system is order at the bar and wait with a buzzer. Â When we ordered, the line was very short and there were no problems, but as lunch progressed, the line crowded everything. Â Our table was surrounded by it. Â The food pick-up area was blocked by it. Â The restrooms were blocked by it.
Our food came at seemingly at random. Â Our four orders came out 3, 4, 2, 1. Â Order 3 came out in five minutes or less. Â Order 4 was about the same. Â Orders 2 and 1 took almost twenty minutes. Â They were all sandwiches except 3, which was a soup. Â We should have known. Â As we were ordering, a lady was complaining that it had been over half an hour since she ordered her lunch.
The Reuben was mostly cheese. Â My friend seemed to like it, but was disappointed. Â I got a Cedarstack. Â It was mostly ham and light on the turkey. Â Bacon pretty much non-existent. Â You know, it was a pretty good sandwich, but a ham and cheese sandwich shouldn't cost me over seven bucks. Â
Appetizers, which came out after three of our four meals, were a terrible waste of time and money. Â Chips were literally Tostitos poured right from the bag. Â Salsa was red water. Â Little to no chunk. Â The stuffed jalapenos were small and flavorless. Â Tiny pieces of half-cooked bacon and a small dab of cream cheese. Â A complete waste.
Hondo's had a good atmosphere and the patio was amazing. Â I'm sure it's an amazing place to hear a show and throw a few beers back, but there's just no reason to order food here.
Just go ahead to Luckenbach and skip this.
AMAZING FOOD! We stayed near Hondo's, heard the live music one night and wandered over for dinner. We were so glad to go! Both our burgers were amazing, the beer was cold, music was great and the weather was great outside, what more could you ask for. Â We are already planning our return trip and Hondo's is on the list!!
Review Source:Dining out in Fredericksburg is kind of tricky for me. Mostly I just don't like to spend a lot of money, and I especially don't want to spend a lot of money someplace with mediocre (at best) reviews. There are an awful lot of places on Main Street that are either really expensive and/or have mixed reviews, so it's been tough in the past to decide where to eat.
Problem solved.
Hondo's is totally affordable and is also really yummy. For Sunday lunch, I got some sort of cheesy, poblano burger complete with crispy tortilla strips and pico de gallo and a half basket of onion strings (plenty to split) for about $13. I indulged a hankering and got a mixed drink for $5. Everything was delicious, and because we weren't famished, the half-pound burger (with tons of bun) was enough for two and kept us full til...all day. I just realized we never ate dinner.
The patio is really nice--lots of green foliage surrounding your choice of picnic tables. There's a spot for a live band, but when we were there the band was just setting up and we instead listened to a CD of old hymns. "When we all get to heaven" and "In the Garden," etc. Basically if I'd just come from church, I'd have wanted a refund on my time that morning since I got a pretty strong dose at Hondo's. But that's ok, I was sipping on my sweet tea vodka and might have even sang along a little (is that allowed? drinking while hymning?).
One question, though. Since it's self-serve like fast food is (you order at a cash register and pick up your food when your buzzer vibrates) do you tip? If so, how much? I tipped a dollar on my drink to the bartender (because that's different) and an extra dollar on my meal in what I thought was a gesture of goodwill since there's no wait staff, but noticed the credit card slip ahead of me had given a 20% tip on a $36 ticket. Either A) I'm a jerk and am now outting myself or B) I can't even imagine what % the person ahead of me tips when being waiting on. Or I guess option C: the 20% person is an idiot. Ok as long as you say B or C, we're cool.
PS the menu explains how the self-serve model works, and then cheekily adds "You can do it!" Love it.
We decided to go here after reading all the great reviews. The reason this is getting one star and not three or more is simple; I got the worst case of food poisoning ever from this place. We visit Fredericksburg for the wine trails every year and  meet my parents there, as well. We went to have dinner here on 2/10/12. The atmosphere was quaint and warm. The staff was very nice, also. Dinner was good until I became very ill at 2am that next morning. It must have been from the burger or the funny tasting water ( that I did inform the cashier about). My fiance did not get sick, but I was out of work almost the whole next week and had to go to doctor to get antibiotics. It ruined my whole weekend and the drive back to Dallas was not fun, either. Probably won't be eating here again next time we go back.
Review Source:As soon as my boyfriend and I arrived in Fredericksburg we were hurting for a good burger. Hondo's had great reviews on here and Urbanspoon so we decided to give it a try.
Note: this is a "serve yourself" kind of place. You order food and sodas at the end of the bar, pay and receive a buzzer. There is a little room at the back where you pick up your food, fill up your drinks and get the napkins/condiments.
They had a band playing and a lot of locals were there taking in the music. It is a pretty cool environment. Now onto the food...
We both ordered Donut Burgers with Cheddar and a small order of the curly fries. The bread was mouth-watering. It was thick and soft with a hint of sweetness, almost like Hawaiian bread. The burgers were really thick and moist with fresh grated cheese on top. The curly fries were crispy and well-seasoned. Everything was really good!
The burgers weren't my absolute favorite of all time but they were good enough to where Eli wanted to go back the next night when we couldn't figure out where to eat.
I highly recommend checking it out if you are in town! Strong drinks, juicy burgers and live music- sounds like a winner to me.
My husband and I had a good time at Hondo's. Â It had rained all day, but not enough to make it impossible to sit outside. Â There were some super loud drunk girls squealing inside, so we went outside to eat. Â I got a baked goat cheese salad, which was good, but the dijon-apple cider vinegarette was subpar after I'd tried their insanely delicious fireball ranch dressing. Â I wish it'd had that instead. Â My husband and I had the ranch with a appetizer of the cheese fries. Â So delicious. Â Man. Â My husband had the Blue Ribbon BBQ Bacon donut burger. Â We read the Yelp reviews beforehand, and he declared them crazy - he will vouch for this burger and says it's delicious. Â
The staff was really friendly. Â They know that tourists are a lot of their business, and didn't mind calling us over to the bar to help ourselves, and had lots of signage so you didn't feel like an idiot, walking in and not knowing where to go. Â The cashier gave us water cups, but I had no idea where to fill them, Â until a nice busboy pointed me in the right direction before I even asked. Â I also loved that above the cook's window, there is a sign that said "You're in luck because David's cooking tonight." Â I think that's a great way to make the cook have pride in his work, and to give it a personal touch. Â
The band was just starting up as we were halfway through eating, but the first few songs were great. Â Atmosphere was awesome too. Â I'm so curious about the building over to the edge of the property that looks like a brownstone, made of limestone. Â It had a sign on it that said "Hondo's Hilton." Â It was so cute. Â It looked like it had storage for various musical equipment in there. Â They should like, turn that into a B&B or something. Â How fun!
The idea of a "donut" burger may sound cool to some, but for me I was skeptical. Indeed my suspicions were confirmed after I tried a basic cheeseburger.
The juiciest part of any "non-donut" hamburger is the middle. Why? Because that is where the meat is thickest and the juices can collect the most. What happens in a donut burger? That's right, you remove the middle--the juiciest part of the burger.
The burger was dry and mediocre. The curly fries were soft and unappealing.
On our last visit to Fredericksburg we stopped by Hondo's with my pup in-tow and had a great evening on the patio listening to live local country music!
I loved everything about this place from the large tree covered patio to the rustic inside with old photos and animal head studded walls. There is no waiter service here you order at the bar take a pager and wait for it to go off then pick up your food. I was a bad fur Mom forgetting the dog water bowl in the car but they fixed us up with a bowl filled with water and ice!
I ordered a delicious salad that was loaded with mixed greens topped with monterey jack cheese, tortilla strips, roasted corn, tomato and a Mahi Mahi fillet with requested on the side tangy creamy avocado dressing. It was the perfect lite dinner on a hot night and was perfectly paired with a STRONG fruity tart Luna Rita!
My sister also had a salad that she enjoyed - topped with baked goat cheese and chicken.
But the winner was the Bro-inlaws burger and the pepper spiced onion rings! The Poblano Green Chile Burger is mixed with chipotle peppers before grilling then topped with poblano monterey jack cheese sauce, tortilla strips, pico and lettuce. The flavors married perfectly between the slightly sweet toasted bun and spicy juicy char grilled meat. The only thing that would have made it better would be some avocado slices:)
Love the hole-in-the-wall ambience. Employees are friendly enough if basically unnoticeable. There are no real waitstaff to speak of as you order from the bar and pick up your food from the back when your pager goes off.
The hamburgers were very good. I got the green chili cheese donut burger and my husband got the chili cheeseburger. The fries were excellent, the beer cold and the margarita I had was tasty and strong.
My sister-in-law had chicken fried steak and didn't love it. She admittedly has never had chicken fried steak before (gasp). I will say it looked a bit dry.
Overall we enjoyed our experience and would return here again.
This is an interesting concept. You have to seat yourself, order at the bar, and then they give you a pager to go pick your food.
We ordered a bacon cheeseburger with parmesan french fries and a chicken quesadilla.
The burger was fabulous but the fries were unbelievable. Â The chicken quesadilla was great but a little greasy. Â
The only reason why I didnt rate it five stars was because the cleanliness of the restaurant was severely lacking. Â My cup was not clean (lipstick marks) and I had to exchange it for another. Â Where you pick up the food, the area had a lot of trash and looked like it hadnt been cleaned in a long time. Â But that is the only reason why I deducted a star.
Hondo's...the neighborhood bar that is so not in my neighborhood.
I LOVE this place...its so freaking laid back...you cant help but feel like you are family and you belong there. The food is good, the drinks are strong and they have live music.
This was my 2nd time being there and i finally got to try the hard to get chicken tamales and they were worth the wait. I know a good tamale when i have one.,. and they make a good tamale. They also make really delicious curly fries. Ive also had their chicken sandwich, my husband has had their burgers and enchiladas and its ALLL good.
It truly is one of my top 5 favorite places in Texas.
We love Hondo's! Â On our first trip to Fredericksburg we called ahead to find some doggy-friendly dining options. Â One look at Hondo's website sold us. Â We love burgers, and I have a serious addiction to onion rings. Â We've been back several times since that first trip.
+Dog friendly!
+Fun atmosphere
+Live music
+Delicious onion rings!
The pic I took of the burger was the kids size and was plenty. Â Of course we ordered fries and onion rings for the table. Â I may or may not have eaten 1/2 the basket of rings myself :)
Two words:
MEAN margaritas.
If you like a STRONG (but tasty!) margarita, this is your spot. And as luck would have it, I do - and I loved Hondo's. They have kind of a funky ordering arrangement - you go inside to the bar (most of the crowd is outside on the huge patio), and order up your food (great burgers and awesome queso) and dranks. The bartender gives you one of those remote notification flashy-buzzy deals and your beverages, and you go off to try to find a table (it was packed the 2 nights I was there). Flashy-buzzy deal goes off when your stuff is ready, and you pick your grub up at a small window at the back of the place. They have live music most nights, and tons of people out dancing on the patio and having a good time. The two ladies that were bartending were interesting characters and fun to talk with. All in all just a fun place, go check it out!
I recently went to round rock for camping and the pleasure of eating at this place it was quite good! I had the texmex burger and it was great!
Now they are donut burgers and they are cooked pretty well done so if you do not like that make sure you ask for medium or so on.
but overall I loved it!
Home of the donut burger! This is a great place for lunch or dinner while visiting Fredericksburg. I'm sure locals go here, too :)
I enjoyed a dinner here on a lovely evening, and appreciated sitting outside on their porch. The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable, and the food was delicious.
Apparently they shape their burgers like a donut, to provide a more even cooking process. Sadly, your hamburger doesn't come out with a hole in the middle of it, but that doesn't impact the taste. I also chowed down on their homemade parmesan potato chips - which I left very few of by the end of the night.
The live music and full bar are also great. I highly recommend the Mayor's Margarita if you're looking for a drink worth your dollar! Check this place out if you're in town, but keep in mind their business hours - they are closed Monday & Tuesday.
On our last visit here, we had a blast. Â Outdoor music was playing and we sat outside and got into the beer drinkin' scene while we ate. Â One of our neighbor diners had her Labrador puppy. I was so excited when she let me hold her and play with her. Â The dog owner then said, "I've got eight more if you want one!" Â Oh, if only I could--what a fantastic offer. Â
The burgers and fries were terrific and tasted so much better outside under the stars listening to good music. Â And, if you like onions--try the onion strings. Â The mister got an order and I gobbled up about half of them. Â Before our meal we shared the queso filled with green chili strips, onions and added chili for $1.00. Â The bar stocks many Texas beers plus a few out of state varieties. Â Next time I'm there, I will try the "Luna Rita", a margarita with pineapple and orange infusion.
