This place was good. Â Nothing special. Â Everybody seems to love the cheese curds in their reviews, but husband and I didn't think they were all that great. Â There was too much puffy batter around the curds, which detracted from the cheese itself. Â I had a burger, which was awesome, as I've come to expect having ordered them via room service before. Â Great flavor. Â Husband had the prime rib steak and cheese sandwich, which was ok, not great flavor, a little too salty (and I like salt). Fries were ok. Â Service was ok. Â Not bad for the price, but again, nothing super special.
Review Source:The good:
The chili is great. It's incredibly thick. More like a casserole with wonderfully spicy flavors. The kids' chicken tenders in a bento box were great with plenty of fruit and fun presentation.
The bad:
I've heard the service can be spotty and we hit one of the bad spots during our last visit. Reuben, French dip and quiche were all served cold following a very long wait. This was disappointing after the chili set the bar for our expectations. The chorizo in the quiche was a little more gamey than what we're used to.
Also, it made us sad when we looked at all the other tables and they all were given complimentary popcorn when they sat down. None for us.
Two adults and two kids and we were all very nice (almost obsequious) so as we left we wondered what we might have done wrong.
Horse & Plow, how do i love thee? Â Best cheese curds ever!!! Â Shared an order with my sister and she ate at least 50%. Â Darn, i was hoping she'd decide they were not good and i would finish them all. Â We ordered the 30" business lunch. Â It is 1/2 a sandwich and 1/2 soup (Beer Cheddar soup) Â American Chips were good. Â The club sandwich was good but didn't have the Neuske's bacon mentioned on the menu. Â Server said they don't include it on the half sandwich. Â Would be nice if they mentioned that on menu. Â The inside of the place is beautiful, Â Nearby (down the hall) Gift Shop has neat items. Â Staff is respectful even tho we don't look like money. Â We made a day of it by visiting the Kohler exhibit and the Shops on Woodlake. Â Artspace had a great exhibit of carved plywood that looked 100% like fabric.
Review Source:Eh.
Beer list - good. This is a good place to stop for several drinks but I don't think they are open until bar close, so beware. But the crowd can get rowdy depending on who is staying at the hotel!
Highlights of the menu: cheese curds, burgers, nachos, and the club is where it's at.
Lowlights of the menu: The steak was thin and grissly with minimal potatoes.
This place has a cozy Wisconsin type atmosphere, but it needs to be refreshed. I've been here dozens of times over the last 20 years and it hasn't changed a bit.
Time for an upgrade, H&P!
First off, we have been coming to the Horse and Plow for twenty years. This last time we were very disappointed in the quality of the food and the prices we were charged. For example; a small 8 oz. beer was $5.50. A small salad was $6.00. Need we continue? When you slip out for lunch for 2 people and end up spending over  $50.00 for two sandwiches( a grilled cheese , and a bratwurst) something is rotten in Denmark. Good luck Horse and Plow. maybe some of the Wisconsin High Rollers will keep you in clover.

The ambiance was warm and rustic, and the staff was very friendly. Our family of 5 was seated right away in a nice corner booth, perfect for our active three young kids. The server made some great recommendations for us. Â My husband and I enjoyed the unique local beer selections and our first experience with Cheese Curds - delicious! The kids had fun, and even got to pick out a prize from a basket as soon as we arrived. We had a fun experience on our vacation, and will definitely be back next year. As we left the restaurant, we enjoyed watching the horse and carriage traveling around on the grounds.
Review Source:We went here for a reception and the service was outstanding. Â There was a constant supply of waitresses coming to the guests and providing drinks from the bar and they had some huge taps full of spotted cow and a weiss beer available for help-yourself. Â The food was good but the cheese curds were outstanding.
Review Source:good pub with a great beer selection - we love new glarus beers and were so happy to get to enjoy them on draft! Â now if only they would let their beers be sold across state lines...
after a disappointing dinner at cucina, the horse & plow brought our spirits back up. Â plenty of tvs, booths, barstools, and history. Â we loved reading about the history of the pub and what life was like for the men who came to kohler to work and live in the american club. Â our server was prompt and helpful, prices were decent.
a good place for casual food & drinks and to catch a game at kohler.
Pretty Darn Good Cheeseburger!!!!! Went here for lunch and had the 8 oz. Burger w/cheddar cheese on the French Baguette. It was cooked perfectly medium, unbelievably juicy with outstanding flavor. Dish is served with pretty ordinary french fries, lettuce, tomato, & onion. Our server was attentive and friendly. Â All in all, a good experience from start to finish. Will definitely go back when craving a cheeseburger.
Review Source:Located in the elegant American Club Resort on the magnificent Kohler Estate (Yes, the people who make your bathroom fixtures have their own town in Wisconsin), the Horse & Plow restaurant is classy, without being pretentious.
Our group of 5 came for dinner and were seated right away. We were also served by the MOST friendly waiter EVER. Attentive, enthusiastic, knowledgable and able to make good recommendations; he was top-notch!
The complimentary baskets of popcorn instead of bread were highly addictive. We were offered refills on the popcorn but refused them because we wouldn't have been able to stop!
You can't visit Wisconsin without having cheese curds. The Beer-Battered Cheese Curds appetizer was dangerously good, even by the native Wisconsinite's standards! Hot, crispy, salty, gooey... amazing.
A variety of entrees were ordered including the Crisp Pork Belly Sandwich, Classic Rueben, American Club, and Midwest Chicken Salad. Portions are generous, and everyone enjoyed their food. The beverage selection is admirable, and the sweet potato fries are the best I can remember having in a long time.
Excellent for almost any occasion whether it be a business lunch or first date, I enjoyed my dinner here and would recommend it to anyone!
Service here is truly hit or miss. The reason why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 is because I can see that recently they have done things to improve the guest experience. Added white linens and fresh floral to the dining area. Horse & Plow now offers happy hour Monday-Friday where you can get buy 1 get 1 rails, WI tap beers and select wines. The appetizers were also half off! Pretty good place to bring your crew after work! Make sure you try The Jigger Ale. They just got it on tap here in the U.S. from the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, Scotland. It is delicious!
Review Source:Kohler is a great day trip destination from Milwaukee. It's only an hour away and features many great shops and restaurants. The Horse & Plow is a enjoyable spot to take a break from shopping. It's decorated in rich wood and brass. I don't know when it was built but it has a 1930's vibe. The menu is standard lunch fare and there's something for everyone. I was there in 2010 and am pretty sure I had the California burger. It was once of the best burgers I have ever had. If my memory serves me right, it featured avocado and feta cheese. When I had the opportunity to stop there for lunch a few weeks ago, I couldn't wait to order it. Sadly, it wasn't on the menu any more. I ordered a basic cheeseburger. After reading some other the reviews here, I also decided to get the battered cheese curds. I didn't know they could be that good! The ranch dip made them even better. I will be back for the cheese curds as soon as possible. My burger was good but nothing spectacular. I would also like to add that their iced tea is delicious. It was a very nice addition to my lunch. Our server was great and I regret that I don't recall her name because she should be recognized for her good work.
Review Source:I often find myself at the Horse & Plow for my family gatherings. The town of Kohler is a convenient halfway point between Milwaukee and Green Bay, and the Horse & Plow is a great restaurant just minutes off of the interstate.
As for history, Kohler is a company town of the eponymous bathroom-fixture empire. Their American Club is like Monaco or Dubai; a five-star resort in the center of an otherwise working class wilderness. In the land of spas and world-class golfing, the only affordable meal for miles around is The Horse & Plow. It's a rustic-themed basement pub that is tolerated on the grounds, likely it's the resort's stable for vetting staff for more sensitive assignments. The waitstaff has always been great to me, though the kitchen has been slow to get the food cooked a couple of times we've trekked out here.
The menu is a pretty standard pub fare. Think burgers and sandwiches. Sadly, the sole vegetarian option remaining is a veggie wrap. But if you are not interested in eating light, you are in for a treat. I can report that their reuben is the best I've had in the state, and I also have great memories of their club from my previous trip. The rest of my folks always order their burgers and love them.
I credit Horse & Plow's bartenders with consistently concocting the best classic bloody mary I've tasted. No tricks or revolutionary twists, but they are top-notch cocktails without fail. I get one every time I visit, day or night. Treat yourself to one when you stop in!
The first night I went with the Plow Burger. Â The burger itself had a nice flavor. Â The sweet potato fries were good, but nothing special. Â The banana bread pudding was excellent!
The second night we started off with our first ever cheese curds, which were pretty tasty! Â The ranch that was served with them made them VERY good. Â I had the dill mustard salmon sandwich, and was expecting it to be a piece of salmon on the baguette. Â Instead it was minced up and formed into a patty, then cooked and put on the baguette. Â I wouldn't order it again. Â All in all, not our favorite on the Kohler property (which is Cucina), but pleasant.
Great casual and moderately priced food.  I ate here a couple of times during  my stay.  If back in Kohler, I will definitely return to Horse & Plow.  My only complaint is the service is a bit slow.  Service was friendly though.
All the dishes I tried were great. Â Not the most healthy food, but definitely very tasty.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of these dishes:
-beer and cheese soup. Â sounds like it could be a bad thing, but it is all goodness. Â smooth, rich soup with very crunchy homemade croutons.
-fried cheese curds are beer battered pieces of cheddar.
-lamb stew had tender and flavorful pieces of lamb with some mashed potatoes on top
-banana bread pudding was one of the best bread pudding I have tried
My girlfriend and I came here thinking it would be a great lunch spot last Sunday while staying at the Inn on Woodlake. We were seated immediately, but we were basically ignored after that. Our waitress abruptly asked with a very boisterous tone what we wanted, and honestly it felt as if our presence was an inconvenience to the restaurant. We waited about 10 minutes for our draft beer order, and then an additional 45 minutes after that we received 2 very undercooked (very rare) buffalo burgers. Our waitress offered to reheat the meat that was on our plate... which is simply ridiculous. She did offer to cook another burger, but honestly the quality was so bad that we didn't want to eat there after that. We paid for our beer and left, and didn't receive any apology whatsoever.
It was very odd considering our entire stay at the Inn on Woodlake was so amazing in comparison to this experience. We'll never go back to the Horse & Plow. It was obvious that they forgot we were even there.
At the very least she could have just said, "Hey I'm so sorry but I forgot to put your order in for the cooks." Or maybe offer a free appetizer or something? But nope, not even an apology. I really really don't recommend this place, and coming from Chicago, I love a good bar & grill type of atmosphere.
My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Kohler and this was our go-to restaurant when we wanted a quick and delicious bite to eat! The menu is small, but with great choices. My husband had the pork belly sandwich and swears it's one of the best dishes he's ever had. I had the club sandwich and it was great. Nice beer selection too!
Review Source:We've been here a number of times over the past several years. We liked it a lot more in the beginning. The menu is OK, but nothing exciting. Service seems to have gone downhill a bit, too. This restaurant is in the 5 star American Club resort, but doesn't really live up to what one might expect from such a place. Ambiance is nice and the bar is impressive. Our kids used to love the basket of popcorn that was always put on the table, but it doesn't look like they do that anymore. We ordered cheddar bacon fries as an appetizer and were surprised to see that the fries were covered in some sort of cheese-flavored powder...in Wisconsin! Kind of feels like they've given up trying to impress people.
Review Source:Quick seating, and a huge beer list if that is your thing. The food is expensive and passable at best. Wife had the American club, which was ok, but but any better than a club other places. I had the scallops and shrimp pasta, which was not very good at all. It was $26, and would have been acceptable at like $10. Avoid unless you are trying to get drunk, then it may be an acceptable place
Review Source:Fantastic place if you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere. Great beers on tap, friendly service, and comfortable place all around. The sandwiches are delicious! Definitely worth it, and pretty good bang for your buck. Get the pork belly sandwich, but split it unless you're starving. You've been warned.
Review Source:Kohler takes your typical Wisconsin bar and goes upscale. Think beautiful wood paneling, local and international craft beers on tap, loads of sandwiches so big you'll need two hands and healthy salads to boot.
I loved a cozy booth for lunch with my group of 4 (plus a baby) which gave us a little bit of privacy. Everything started off good with my cold Great Dane beer and beer cheese soup (exactly what it sounds like - a little too thick though of course I ate it all). Come the entrees I was thankful I'd ordered a spinach salad which was heavenly before a spa experience. I had sandwich envy though because the french fries were fantastic! Sweet potato fries are also an option.
Why doesn't my experience at Horse & Plow get 5 stars? Our waitress. We had to get the manager to give us water refills and after she took our order she conveniently forgot about us. I'm not holding it against Horse & Plow though...I would definitely come back!
Went here on a stay at the Inn on Woodlake this past weekend. Â Good food, yummy cheese curds, very friendly staff. Â Also, faboo beer list. Â Lots of local beers. (I'm a total beer snob. Â Sorry, people.) Â I had the New Glarus Spotted Cow...really good, and probably FANTASTIC in the summer. Â Reminded me of the cream ale my hubby made this past summer. Â But this is not a beer review. Â My husband had the Texan Burger (or something) which looked good and he enjoyed it. Â I had a portobello sandwich which was great. Â We both got sweet potato fries...which I will always order when available.
We were there on a Friday evening, and it was not at all crowded. Â There were a LOT of kids (the scream-y, running around types), so I don't know that I would use this as my local bar if I lived around here. Â Weird thing? Â Apparently you can still smoke in some places in Wisconsin (really, people, get with it already), so we were asked "smoking or non?" and I was a little speechless for a minute. Â No one was smoking while we were there, from what I could tell, though.
This is a good casual option if you're staying at the Kohler resorts!
The Horse & Plow... Hip, Hip, Hooray all the way!!!
Just about the only spot in Kohler to catch a game on tv, grab some melt-a-riffic cheese curds and a cold, foamy microbrew. Now really, how can you go wrong with that? Truly, you can't... and to those that were surprised at how 'casual' H&P is given the fancy-schmancy nature of the resort... uhhh... well, it's a Pub! Not as in pub-like. Or pub-done-resort-style. Nah. Just a good ol' fashioned pub with bowling alley tabletops, brass bar rails, nachos, wings and a beer list as extensive as the day is long.
It's actually a nice and somewhat surprising departure from all of the lavish ornateness that is the rest of The American Club... shed your spa robe, let your hair down and grab a Delirium Tremens or even sample something new like the Thomas Hardy Ale I fell so desperately in love with. Don't forget a helping of some *great* pub grub... H&P does you a serious solid with some of the creamiest and most droolworthy Wisconsin Three Cheese & Beer Soup you'll ever taste. Topped with crunchy, delicious, homemade garlic croutons it's a genuine Wisconsin experience not to be missed!! Add on a Sheboygan double brat patty sandwich with haystack onion rings or some BBQ Chicken Sliders w/ cheddar cheese on dark rye slider buns if you feel you can take the calorie heat... Fortunately, the Sports Core workout facility is just a (kidney) stones throw away!
Weekends bring live entertainment to the H&P and oh yeah, you can still smoke inside here, for now... side note for the non-smokers and smokers alike although I've rarely, if ever, seen anyone light up here. As it remains though, Wisco is hardcore... and so is The Horse & Plow. Enjoy!
Key Yelp: Great service, fun pub setting and killa sandwiches!
Review: We had a great lunch here. The food was a cut-above, in my opinion. The beer selections were great but I admit sadly to not participating since I did not want to pass out midday.
The main thing is to give a shout out to the "Brat Patty Melt." This sandwich was a winner and something I unfortunately will be craving for the foreseeable future. The concoction in question was a bratwurst patty (who knew, I'm from Chicago) with yummy melted Cheddar, butter pickles, thick smoked crispy bacon and (oh boy) thin onion rings. All of this was magically stacked on a PERFECT roll. Crisp, corn dusted on the outside but light and airy inside, the perfect vehicle to dispatch this fat-ladden fantasy nonstop to my mouth. My wife, in typical contrasting style ate a veggie sandwich with some kick-butt sweet potato fries.
There are not many alternatives around Kohler and there need not be. This place makes a great lunch, drinking or snack spot good for multiple stops during your visit.
so i am giving the horse and plow four stars just like i gave the wisconsin room four stars ... this does not mean the food is comparable. the wisconsin room is several levels better, but if you do not feel like a fancy restaurant but still want to have a great time and great food ... like pub food ... then the horse and plow is the right place for you (well in case you find yourself in kohler). i had a business lunch there and it was actually fun. the food was on the upper scale of pub food (i had a sausage paddy ... which is more or less a hamburger with the paddy made out of sausage ... that came with the best sweet potato fries i have had and buttery pickles (sounds odd but was really tasty). since it was a business lunch i just had a coke but the beer selection looked really great (and i wished that i could have stayed another day there to test the pub in the evening for dinner, but i didn't have time for that).
so again, like everywhere up there in kohler the service was great, very friendly, the food was great pub food, i would definitely go back which i am back in kohler.
The American Club is a 5-star experience and if you are looking for a very casual dining experience in a bar (read: loud, smoking, crowded, bar food) this is the place for you.
I was expecting something a bit nicer - something more like the Claddagh Irish Pub in Algonquin, Illinois. I was not impressed and probably will not be going back.
When you are seated, you will get a basket of popcorn (cold) which is tasty but remember we are talking bar food here.
I had a burger and a salad, my husband had a french dip. Both great and the service is wonderful (as it is everywhere in Kohler!).
The atmosphere is lacking. It was like eating at a not-so-nice Applebee's.
I searched other reviews for this place, and none of them mentioned cheese, which is especially sad as this restaurant is in WISCONSIN! Â
Well, now that that is over with, I would like to inform the public of the glorious goodness that is the Horse and Plow's....BEER BATTERED CHEESE CURDS!!! Â These pillowy delicacies of the Wisconsin world are the single greatest food ever created. Â The Wisconsin sharp Cheddar heated to a stringy delight inside its crispy shell and dipped into a cup of creamy ranch....ohhhhhhh yeahhhhhh.... Â Sorry, I just started drooling again just thinking of them. Â
I could probably mention the great burger and beers I have had there, but I will not soil this review with talking about anything but cheese curds that are deep fried into ambrosia.
The greatest place in Sheboygan County for casual nice style dining is definitely "The PLOW" !!! You have the Sports Bar Ambiance with Class. awesome place to watch a Packer Game, while surfing the net on your notebook computer, and eating on a Perkins, TGIF, Chili's budget. Why settle? Why not be treated like royalty at the only 5 Diamond Resort in the Midwest. HeyWhatEver and the review of WhatEversTRAVEL and WhatEversFOOD highly recommend The American Club in Kohler, WI my backyard as the place to be. The Horse and Plow is the low-end of their dining levels, but what a great starting point. YOU'LL LOVE IT !!! Let's meet there and talk about whatever... HeyWhatEver

This is a great casual place at the American Club, which may seem inundated with high-priced restaurants. Â I ordered their pot pie... honestly, I don't think I've ever tasted a pot pie that delicious!! Â It was actually a homemade pot pie with the flakiest crust I've ever had. Â Our waitress was good, despite the demanding table next to us running her ragged.
We really enjoyed this place!!
This is a causal place to eat at the American Club which was a nice change of pace from the other "nicer" restaurants in the premises.  This is a good casual place for lunch and/or dinner.  I enjoyed  the pub feel and there were some TV with sports game playing. Â
The food is what you would expect from a regular pub- burgers, turkey sandwich, fries, etc. Â Â I ordered the turkey club sandwich which was very good. Â My husband liked his burger with sweet potato fries (which I stole a few to eat!) ;-) Â They did have a good selection of craft beer! Â That was a big plus for my husband!!
