Lived here 3 years and just discovered this place?
I FAIL.
At first blush, the conditioned yuppie eye will exclaim "DIVE BAR!"
It's not at all fair to call this a dive bar:
The owners are not divey people, quite the opposite!
Nor is the clientele.
Nor is the music.
Nor are the drinks ...
Solid standard bar food.
Better beer selection that a chain restaurant.
Epic bar decor.
Outstanding music
My boyfriend and I were staying at Rosemont Manor in Berryville, and according to Yelp, this was only bar closer than 10 miles away. Â Sweet. Â Had to check it out on the way back from some wine tasting so we didn't go to bed at 9:30 pm again. Â
Struck up an immediate conversation with the bar owners (one of which turned out to have gone to my school and had a fascinating life story), made friends with the dogs, enjoyed being in the "local" scene. Â
Absolutely perfect for that evening. Â Obviously not swanky or super pretty - and no liquor - but a great place to stop. Â Don't skip it.
Classic 5 star old roadside restaurant and bar that the new highway left behind. Good, honest, straight forward meals. Beer and wine. We had a burger and grilled ham sandwich. Burger was a pre-made patty with lettuce and tomato. Cooked just right. The grilled ham sandwich was particularly nice with shaved ham. Beer is cold. The gentlemen that waited the table, cooked the food, and tended the bar was very nice and great service. Place is clean, plenty of parking, and eclectic decoration. Same family since 1946. It is only a few minutes off VA RT 7. Turn at the sign for State Route 679 (State Route 679 & Pine Grove Rd are the same here) . Since the restaurant is on the old horse shoe that the new highway cut off you can approach from either direction. Indoor seating and cover patio (smoking o.k. on patio). Friendly, good food and beer: a classic we'll visit again!
Review Source:My fiancee mentioned this place, that she had read about it in a review way back in 1999 and recommended we visit every time we visited Bluemont, about an hour outside DC. It's a bit of a roadhouse, a bit of a pub. We visited on a Sunday evening, right before the kitchen closed and managed to get in two orders of the Flamin' Red Fish. All waiting was done by one person (who was also bartender). Lightly breaded, fresh fish with freshly cut fried potato wedges (where were more like thick fries). Having grown up on the Gulf Coast eating fish almost like bread, I was extremely happy with my food.
There is often musical entertainment and the environment is very colorful with funny, eccentric signs and knick-knacks posted all over the place, including Christmas tree lights strung across the ceiling.
You want minimalism but deliciousness? You must pay them a visit. The menu doesn't have many items but what they do have is delicious. They only take cash or checks and your receipt basically consists of calculations written on a blank piece of notepad paper.
