Fredericksburg has multiple places to have a glass of wine in.  And House Wine is no different in the pricing of said wine.  $15 seems to be a standard price for any proprietor which recommends a glass.  I ended up getting a decent glass of pinot grig which I believe came in around $9 ish.  One thing is if you are staying in F-Burg, you may want to opt to get a bottle or better still, stop off at one of the many wineries and pick up a bottle, enjoy it at your hotel or B&B and then head out to House Wine.

House Wine has a modern upscale feel to it.  There were many places to sit and relax while having a swig or the ol grapes.  On the night that we were there, we enjoyed a great live set from a young lad by the name of Josh.  The bar was well lit, in that  I mean the ambiance was nice.  There bar itself is pretty large and I enjoyed sitting at the bar chatting with the owner and then the bartender.  Suzie drifted towards the entrance and stretched out in a big old leather chair and enjoyed the tunes.

It was nice to see that all the wines were available by the glass.  I strongly suggest you ask what the price is before your order the glass.  I had a little bit of a sticker shock when we got our tab, since we would of definitely had some savings if we just bought a bottle of red and white and corked the remainder for another day.  However, we did venture out back in and was able to buy a bottle champagne for our morning mimosa's.  It was a good value.  Probably will wander in if we are in town again.. then again there seems to be several similar places around town we may check out before coming back.

I'm a Fredericksburg local and this is my favorite bar.  The owner, Todd, and all of the employees are friendly and super knowledgable.  No matter what type of mood I'm in I describe what I'm thinking and they'll bring taste after taste until I settle on something.  I love the ambiance also, nicely lit bar area, great lounge area in the front and a cute little patio out back - something for everyone.  I do wish there were more and better food options, but they will allow you to order food from neighboring restaurants, so you really can't complain too much.  Definitely not an inexpensive evening, but always a fun one.

After an afternoon of wine tasting, touring, shopping, and dinner, we were walking out of Auslander to our car to go back to our room when we heard the sound of live music, and turned back to see where it came from. We stumbled into a little piece of wine-music heaven! An extremely talented jazz quartet (The Lampshades) was playing, there were couches and chairs for seating up front, and a wine bar in the back. A red couch happened to be open, so we sat ourselves down and ordered two glasses of wine, both of which were EXCELLENT, and moderately priced. At break, Josh, the vocalist, came over and introduced himself. Very un-assuming band, as was the place, given all that they had to offer. I hesitate to write this review because I don't want the place to be too crowded when we go back to Fred! LOVED this place.
--- As a side note, after reading some other reviews here, I do remember the first time we saw this place, we thought the staff was snotty.  There were several hot girls sitting at the bar, getting lots of attention, but when hubby and I opened the door, they said that indeed they were closed (to be fair, it was indeed 5 minutes after closing time). If I were still as young as those girlies, they would've let me in.  No likey the snob part. Have to bump it down one star.  But the night we were there in May 2012, everything was perfect.

I spent a birthday weekend in Fredericksburg and some friends had really raved about House. Wine. When we went by, on a Saturday afternoon, things were pretty slow. The bartender (manager? owner?) was chatting with 2 couples at the bar, so we took a tall table nearby.

We love wine, and know quite a bit about what we like. I clearly explained to our waitress what I wanted: a juicy, fruit-forward red from Italy or Spain - not too tannic, something with nice berry flavors, not too heavy. She gave me one wine to taste that nearly puckered my mouth with tannin. Then she brought a malbec for me to taste. Seriously? There's nothing light, Spanish or Italian about a malbec. Then when I wasn't wild about either choice, she said "Well, that's all we have open like that, and I'm not going to open anything else for you."

    I see.

My husband didn't like his wine all that much either. While we sipped at our marginal wines (which turned out to be $12 each - we never saw a menu or a price), we couldn't help but hear the manager/owner tell the 2 couples at the bar that people used to think nothing of spending thousands of dollars at the shop on furniture, but these days people just get a glass of cheap wine. Until that moment, I had no idea that the furniture in the shop was for sale - so no wonder they're not selling any.

With bad attitudes, poor information, and lousy marketing, this place gets a big thumbs down from me. My friends definitely had a different experience - they visited in the evening when the bar was busier and more convivial, so perhaps we just got the b-team.

Very cool place.  A big selection of all kinds of different wines.  You can taste most before you buy, which I love.  The owner and staff are very nice and welcoming.  The atmosphere is intimate but casual.  The wine was well priced but the food was a little expensive in my opinion.  All in all a great place to go and we will go back when we are in town again!

Nice concept, but they are too pricey and the quality of their food does not match the prices.  We shared a bottle of wine, and got a plate with meat, cornichons, olives, and mustard, around $15.  My friend wanted cheese and crackers with it, so we had to order a 2nd plate (around $12) for the cheese and crackers and a bunch of grapes.  Nothing impressive for the cheeses, a chunk of brie, swiss, cheddar, and maybe jack?  They had a sesame cracker I really liked, though.  The meat plate didn't come with the cornichons as advertised.  We asked the waitress and she said "oh we're out of them, do you want extra olives?"  Shouldn't they have done that to begin with?  One slice of salami, one slice of roast beef, and TWO slices of BOLOGNA!  are you freaking kidding me??  Bologna?  That's BALONEY!  That little snack cost us almost 30 bucks... and was NOT even worth it.  We won't be back.

I walked by house. wine. a couple of times before going in.  The bar is set back with the store in front.  It didn't look like there was anyone inside and I was looking for something a bit more lively.  The appearance from the street was finally enough to convince me to give it a try.

I didn't check out the store, but the wine bar itself is a nice find.  My visit was on a weeknight and I was right about the small crowd, but the two people at the bar when I got there were both locals and very friendly which was nice since I was there alone.

What I didn't realize from the street is that how far back the bar area goes.  There was a back hallway with chairs and tables placed throughout, which I suspect would still make it feel cozy even on a busy night.

The service, wine selection, and price were all top notch.

We absolutely love the concept of this place.     A small "upscale" feeling wine bar in the back and some cool french/modern looking furniture in the front.

I've been here about 3-4 times with my girlfriend over the past year or two.  Overall the service is wonderful.  The owner of the place is really friendly as well as the waitstaff at the bar in the back.

Normally Im not one to comment on other peoples reviews; however, I think that Courtney's experience is a little off base.  First off, I'm a 6'4" redhead with a full beard who usually wears flipflops and shorts - in my own way: as alternative as she is.  Needless to say, I'm not the Republican looking people that traditionally hang out at wine bars.  Ive been here several time and found that I was treated with the same level of respect as anyone else in the store.  Honestly, I feel at home at house. wine. as I would at any of the dives here in Austin.

As for the Wine portion - I like to go there in the evening and pick up a glass of wine (unstemmed glasses - yeah!) and hang out in the little "hallway" on one of their cute leather settees.

Overall, this is perhaps my favorite place to go in Fredericksburg when Im there.  I make it a point to hang out there whenever Im in town.

My wife loves wine while I am more of a beer fan. Since it was our anniversary, I told her that I would join her at house wine if she would hit up the beer garden next door with me. We never made it. They have over 250 bottles on the wall and the bartenders can describe most if not all of them! They asked me what kinds of wine I liked, and brought me a great bottle on the first try! The people there are very knowledgeable about wine and food pairings as well as the local places to eat (if you don't like German food like me....) We enjoyed this place so much, we went back 3 times in 2 days!
I never really even looked at the furniture up close, it looks nice, but I'm sure it was a little expensive because we were in tourist ridden Fredericksburg! All in all, it is a great place with friendly people!

Just by walking by this store I knew I had to go in - great style and furniture and then bonus!  a pretty snazzy wine bar, tons of lounge seating and a great outdoor porch.  What more can you ask for?

Well I didn't ask for standing at the bar for literally 5 minutes waiting to be helped while the 2 women that were working there chatted with a couple of customers. It wasn't busy at all and I looked around but no one wanted to acknowledge my existence even though it was very obvious.

I hate to say this but I am heavily tattooed and I feel like I was discriminated against.  If I looked like the normal Fredericksburg tourist or resident Republican, I would have had a glass of wine in my had within a minute.  I plan on writing them a letter and never stepping foot in there again.

What a cool concept :  wonderful wines and great furniture/home decor.  It's schwanky wine bar meets Pottery Barn.

The coolest thing about this place is that you can try the best wines BY THE GLASS.  Huh?  Definitely take advantage!!!  I tried the Tomero Malbec (Argentinian, I think?).  Wow.  Now that's good wine.  Service was good - very knowledgable about wines from all over the world.

This definitely makes my list of places to go if I head to Fredericksburg again.
