I have mixed feelings on this one. And if half stars were possible, I'd certainly give 3 1/2. I booked the Madison Cottage for a somewhat last minute getaway for my fiance and I. Unfortunately just minutes after settling into our room we heard a strange sound in the wall behind the bed. After talking to the innkeeper about it, turns out they think they have a squirrel in there. Not something I was going to sleep well with. Thankfully the Inn wasn't fully booked on a Sunday night and the inn keepers were more than happy to switch us to one of the suites in the main house. And we were so grateful for their efforts to make us comfortable. The room was nice, and we enjoyed the private entrance to the 2nd floor porch. Breakfast the next morning was less than impressive. Few options, especially for anyone who prefers to start the day with something light and healthy, and it was all served lukewarm. The location and grounds were beautiful, the everything was well kept, but just not the perfect place for us.

My boyfriend and I were invited to a wedding in nearby Culpeper, so we decided to make a Valentine's weekend getaway out of it. We had the best time at the Inn at Meander Planation! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it's the only bed and breakfast I've ever stayed in, and I have no point of comparison.

We were able to book the Lightfoot Room just two weeks in advance of our stay. When we arrived, a lovely staff member escorted us to our room and showed us how to turn on the amazing gas fireplace to make it warm and cozy.

We were just in time for our dinner reservation at 7, so we quickly changed and headed to the dining room. FYI, attire at dinner can be casual, but no jeans. The four-course dinner was divine. My courses were a spinach salad with goat cheese and roasted pear, tempura shrimp, salmon with white beans and pot de creme for dessert. Service by the same lovely staff person who showed us our room was great. She was personable and polite -- this is not a stuffy B&B, despite the old Virginia accoutrements. Each party sits at their own table, so don't worry about dining at close range with strangers.

Next morning's breakfast was equally as enjoyable. Coffee is brewing at 8:30, and breakfast is served a 9. It's another multiple-course affair that started with fresh-baked muffins one morning and piping hot scones the next.

The inn is beautifully landscaped, which would be a real treat to see in spring. Bird feeders, a fountain and rocking chairs outside our room provided a countryside ambiance I don't normally experience being a city dweller. If you go, take a jaunt around the 80-acre grounds and say hello to the horses. After our hearty breakfasts, we enjoyed the walks even in chilly weather.

There are no TVs in the rooms, which I greatly appreciated. You won't run out of things to do with shopping in downtown Culpeper and James Madison's Montpelier only a few miles away.

My husband I eloped here this December!!! Suzanne the innkeeper was absolutely wonderful!!! Every email and phone call was answered with quick responses. Our elopement package included the officiant, bridal bouquet, grooms boutineer, champagne, a small cake, a few pictures taken by Suzanne, and dinner. We decided to get married on a Thursday and booked the Robinson room for one night which included breakfast the next morning. EVERYTHING was amazing!!!! Our room was nice and cozy and included a fireplace which we did use since it was so cold out. We requested a non religious ceremony and the officiant which was not only a very nice man but also very personable did a great job!!! The flower arrangement and my bridal bouquet was beautiful. The champagne and wedding cake was delicious!!!! Our Dinner and breakfast the next morning was to die for!!!!! It was the little personal touches that were added to our ceremony that really made me smile. Suzanne not only took pictures but also made a recording of our vows and added them to a CD for us to take home. Our dinner menus had a small customized message congratulating us and wishing us a lifetime of love. We plan on returning next year for a couple of days and this time when its warm out so that we can enjoy the 80 acres the plantation sits on!!!! I highly recommend this establishment to anyone and everyone!!!!

My husband and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary with a romantic getaway to this B&B over the weekend. We chose it based on the price, the website, and the strong reviews that it got online. In order to stay here, you have to eat dinner at the Inn at Meander Plantation Restaurant one evening, so we chose Friday night--the night of our anniversary--to do the $65/person prix fixe dinner.
    I'll talk about that first.
    It was phenomenal.
"Cocktail hour" began at 6:00; everyone having dinner that night congregated in the parlor and living rooms of the Inn for complementary hors d'oeuvres and bar drinks for a price. I ordered a Manhattan and relaxed. We enjoyed conversing with the other visitors, and found this to be a pleasant way to begin the evening.
At 7:00, our tables were ready. Each couple was seated at a table chosen specifically for them, with personalized menus (ours wished us a happy fifth wedding anniversary.) The food was out of this world. Absolutely gourmet, unique, and thoughtful. I chose to pay $25 extra and have the chefs choose wine pairings for each of the five courses. I appreciated their dedication to only serving local wines, and found the selection to be delicious and interesting. Dinner lasted about two hours, and we left feeling as though we'd just experienced something special.
In addition to an awesome dinner, we were treated to two awesome breakfasts. Each took about an hour, with multiple courses, all of which were prepared with care. We also enjoyed being served with beautiful silver and china.
    Onto the accommodations.
We stayed in "Dependency 2." It was the most affordable option and looked perfectly nice--the "Dependency" house was an old slave house on this historic plantation, and we liked the idea that it was separate from the main house, as we enjoy our privacy.
The room was beautifully decorated, with a four-poster bed that was very comfortably dressed. The exterior of the Dependency house and the main house was stunning--we really felt in tune with nature, and I sat on the front porch of the main house on both mornings, watching deer frolic and listening to birds sing.
The one drawback was our bathroom. The shower wasn't exactly a luxury shower (nor was it advertised as one), which on its own would have been fine--unfortunately, however, there was a slight insect problem in the bathroom. To be fair, there had been a LOT of rain in the area, which I know often brings bugs inside, especially in an old (like, 300 years old,) house. However, as someone who generally freaks out around insects, I felt unable to relax in there and REALLY rushed my showers. When I asked another guest if he'd found any insects in his room, he said he'd only seen one ladybug. He was staying inside the main house, which I think makes a difference.
As for the service, we found it to be excellent across the board. The lady who greeted us, Danielle, knew everything about the history of the place and gave us a tour of the grounds. She also gave us restaurant recommendations and helped us settle in. All of our servers were lovely. We had the pleasure of meeting Suzanne, one of the innkeepers, on our first evening and saw her each day after that, as well. She was very pleasant, full of helpful suggestions for sight-seeing, and clearly intent on making our stay comfortable and fun.
My husband and I will definitely return to the Inn at Meander Plantation. It is a beautiful gem set in a beautiful part of our country.

The Inn has a special place in our hearts. We haven't been in a couple of years, but the owners I'm sure have only improved it. (I do believe the chef who was there at the time (August 2008) has moved on.

We were seeking a week in the VA countryside with our two dogs and great food. The Inn has pet-friendly cottages that are perfectly appointed--neither too over the top nor too spare--perfect country manor-style without being fussy. They gave us special towels for the dogs, and a special blanket to cover the bed and sofa if the dogs got onto the furniture.

The grounds have plenty to keep one occupied for relaxation--many acres to walk and explore along a river and through fields, horses surround the inn and there is an adjoining working farm. And the location--a short drive to Culpepper on the north and Orange to the south; Montpelier nearby, and some quite good wineries to visit (which they will recommend the ones to see and avoid!).

Breakfasts--I never wanted these to end. 3 courses, served in the manor house dining room. Excellent coffee, and food that was all around quite good, thankfully not falling into that genre of B&B food where the cook is unable to execute the lofty vision (you know, the minced herbs over an omelette with fruit wedges, when the elements are all at different temperatures and stages of doneness--these gals know what they're doing).

We had the dinner a few different nights of our stay. I think I read the chef is gone, so I'll spare the review of that. He was from DC and without a doubt, cooked the most amazing piece of salted cod in a miso-glaze, a dish that I still taste and lust after (and have tried to recreate on numerous occasions). I could only imagine the ladies who run the place have capably taken the reins--we'll see when we return!

Step into Luxury when you dine here.   Candlelight in the evening is perfect for the romantic occasion.   Local fare and exquisite presentation are the backdrop to the flavors and textures offered by the chef.   Unique plating techniques provide an expression of art as only the gifted culinary experts can accomplish.
    Definitely worth the splurge!
The Inn at Meander is never boring, as they offer special menus and changing selections.

Went with a party of 4 for dinner.  Five amazing courses and wonderful service.   Lovely, plantation home decorated for the period.  Great evening - will definitely be back - hopefully for an overnight visit!
