small town gay bar. that pretty much sums it up.
although i grew up around here, i hadn't experienced irene's until my high school reunion brought me back for a visit. yep, i went to the reunion. really i just wanted to see the look on people's faces when i introduced them to my girlfriend. :)
since then i have stopped in whenever i'm in town. i have experienced the following:
--karaoke night. decent.
--a drag show. i was a little saddened, not by the performers, but by the audience. they just kind of sat there and stared. my girlfriend and i cheered our butts off to try to make up for the lack of enthusiasm in the front row. i do love seeing drag queens in small towns cuz i just feel so darn proud of 'em.
--being the only people in the bar on a thursday night. we were greeted by silence, but the bartender quickly put on some music for us.
--dart playing. always a good time.
--chatting with gay men from neighboring (even smaller) towns. god, i don't know how they do it. i'm a city girl, but i do know that plenty of people prefer small town life. to each his own. and to be gay in a small town i'm sure has it's challenges. more power to 'em.
the staff is great, the drinks are cheap, and frankly quincy needs this place.
