I came here after a hard day of hiking at Bear Mountain and I was very hungry! I would've jammed anything in my food hole just to make the dreadful hunger cease. Basically anything that I would shove in my mouth would be very delicious to me.
Unfortunately for the Iron Frog Tavern, they just did not have enough flavor for me. The food was pretty good albeit pricy. My party of hungry hikers ordered 3 pitchers of beer and for appetizers, we ordered wings and nachos. The nachos were pretty good as they had fresh melted cheese on top instead of gross cheese whiz and they had jalapenos sprinkled on. I thoroughly enjoyed those nachos. As for the wings, they were good, just not great. Not too many came on the plate and they were not spicy or crispy enough.
For my entree I ordered the Bourbon BBQ Chicken and I was disappointed. The bun was toasted to the point where it had a lot of black char on it and so was the chicken. Bleh. There was just not enough sauce or flavor on the sandwich. As for the fries that came with it, they were a bit too fat and soggy. I like my fries thinner and crispy.
The restaurant was very crowded but we got in fast because we made a reservation on Open Table. The service was adequate and nothing to complain about. Overall, it was an A-OK experience. I probably won't be going back but that's just because I want to experience more restaurants in the area.
Had a business appointment in the building and stopped for drinks and a late lunch/early dinner. We were happy to come at happy hour, since they have good drink prices and a selection of small plates if you want to eat a little something. There weren't many people there when we went. The service (bartender and food server) was very attentive and helpful. Nice atmosphere, too.
Review Source:1.) Just to warm you up:
The last time I was here I was here for the drinks and live band. I gave it three stars for what it was - small place for that hosted live music. Perhaps I am comparing it to other places which are more suitable for that type of event. But let's forget about my previous review, because this time I get to review the meat of this place (no pun intended). But I dunno why I'm giving this place a 4. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm attracted to a certain female who goes to this place? or am I really giving this an actual 4, instead of a 3 or 5? Well, let me explain what my experience was like.......
2.) What your eyes may see:
I came in the day time. It was pretty quiet. Pretty spacious for seating, pretty clean. A lot of polished wood, and shiny leather seats for booths. There are TVs at the bar and dining room. You can see into the kitchen which is pretty good. It looked clean and spacious itself. I love how this place is connected to several businesses.
3.) Food and drink:
I ordered the Hot Buffalo BONED-IN wings, and a glass of Spaten Oktoberfest. The wings were wonderful - hot, crispy, spiced, and the sauce was buffalo with a hint of sugar. The carrots and celery that accompanied it were fresh, with a nice crisp. The wings, and you need to know this, are tossed in the sauce, so it doesn't come doused or covered in sauce like other wing places do. Depending on how you like them, the sauce itself tastes great!
4.) Service:
The bartender was a nice, chill guy. Even the cooks came out to ask how everything was. Well, I guess you can say they were attentive which is what every customer needs from a business. Just when I thought stuff here was okay, the bartender let me try one of their Irish Bomb Jell-O shots which was Bailey and Jameson. It tasted like dark chocolate. Interestingly good!
5.) Impressions:
Time to try their other food on the menu and I hope the female who I'm attracted to there doesn't distort my thinking ;)
Awesome burgers, awesome wings, great live music!
The owner, Pamela, is an incredible person and very bubbly. I've been here a couple times on my own and loved the food. Recently I was hanging with my friend who was bouncing there and then I helped bounce one night. The crowd is usually fine and fun with the occasional troublemaker. But, what watering hole doesn't get a couple of those every now and then?
I'd recommend this place for lunch, dinner, and definitely for late night hang out. In the spring and summer the patio is a great place to chill!
My boyfriend had tried out this place for the first time this summer after playing a round of golf, and he had been telling me he wanted to take me here because he knew i'd like it. He must really know me well, I loved the place! We went here on a Saturday around 5:00. My boyfriend was impressed that both of the tv's had golf on them.
We sat up at the bar and we were greeted by the bartender, I wish I could remember his name because he was great. You could tell his regulars LOVED him as he made them feel like they were right at home. I observed a woman at the table behind me, drinking a big blue drink that looked like it was in a jar. I asked what it was, and the bartender told me it was called "Pond Juice" a mix of Malibu coconut rum, vodka, pineapple juice, and blue curacao - topped off with an orange slice & gummy frogs! And it was served in a big mason jar. Such a perfect signature drink to have at a place like this.
We weren't going to order food, but we decided to try the nachos with grilled chicken. My boyfriend doesn't like vegetables of any kind, so the chef kindly put the toppings (scallions, sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, and jalapenos) on the side. I know some people may say nachos are nachos and they're hard to mess up.. but these were great nachos. The chips weren't the salty round yellow ones, they were the kind my mom used to use when I was little and she'd make "chips & cheese". You could tell they used a higher grade of cheese, and the chicken was cooked just right. I saw lots of other menu items i'd like to try in the future like the macaroni and cheese with a side of BBQ pulled pork, and a salad that had goat cheese on it also looked like something i'd like to try.
I loved the entire place and everything about it. It was warm and cozy inside, very family friendly. The bar setup was great too, exactly like something i'd love to have if I ever had my own restaurant. The outside patio looked welcoming too, i've heard they have music there in the summer? We will definitely be back!
For a pub, this place is AWESOME! Â Very hard to believe you can order some of the gourmet-style specials they offer. Â Chef Daley does a fine job maintaining high standards for this place. Â I wish more folks knew just how special this place truly is. Â
Similar to some of our other favorite restaurants, we do tastings here often. Â Chef Daley does a great job pulling together a fantastic tasting. Â He will often come out and serve a dish checking in to see how we perceive the meal. Â You can see the passion in him. Â What a pleasure to have the opportunity to let him explore his creative energies with us. Â We always walk out amazed at what we ate. Â It is so hard to believe we ate like a king and a queen at a simple pub. Â Trust me..it's possible, we go their often and we are living proof and we are not always the easiest to please either!
One of our standard favorites that they offer on the menu is Asian sliders with pork belly. Â These are a must have! Â I long for these all the time - perfectly cooked, sweet pork belly topped with a home-made bread and butter pickle on brioche bread. Â Yummy. Â Simply delicious. Â
They always offer incredible specials. Â The specials have never failed us, so if you are up for something different give it a try. Â I am sure you will be impressed. Â They make their pasta and sauces in house, and they have some pretty killer pate that comes out in a beautiful spread with mustard seeds, jams, etc. Â Really nice presentation, and even better tasting!
The ambiance is nice, cozy, and quiet. Â They have a full bar, so if you are craving some drinks they are more than capable of meeting your needs. Â The staff is always super pleasant. Â They really make you feel right at home. Â Overall, great place that never fails us. Â This is definitely one of our favorite places to frequent.
Well done, Chef Daley, well done.
Thank you Yelp for helping us find this place. Never would have found it otherwise. Â This place had a touch of class for a sport bar and restaurant, as others have mentioned. Â The pulled pork sandwich was one of the best I have ever had and my wife's chicken pot pie was outstanding. Â The quality and preparation of the food was first class. Â I recommend the sweet potato fries, which were amazing. Â Would come here again if in the area.
Review Source:We've been here maybe half a dozen times, for lunches, dinners, and one raucous afternoon to watch a Giants-Patriots game. Our latest visit was for an early lunch today. The Frog has always been dependable and steady, maybe a hiccup here and there, but usually pretty good.
We walked in around 11:30 and ordered a BLT with turkey and an Espana Omelet. The BLT was very good and was offered with a side of fries, chips or cole slaw. The menu only mentioned "Fries" so when our server asked us if we wanted regular or sweet potato fries, we chose the sweet and quietly wondered if there would be an up charge for that. There wasn't!
The omelet was seved with thin chorizo slices, diced tomatoes and asparagus. I asked for an egg white omelet (the menu doesn't mention that option), our server checked and said they could prepare it, and again we were pleased to learn there was no upcharge. I liked the home fries served with the eggs- whether by design or by accident the homefries included all kinds of sizes and shapes, ranging from small cubes to medium cubes to a potato chip like slice. From a variety perspective, it worked well, they all had different crunch levels and tasted great.
The sandwich was $9.99, the eggs were $8.99, a coffee and an iced coffee were $1.85 each.
Service was a teense slow (which was weird considering there were just 5 customers there including us), especially the wait for the food, but we were in no rush so it was all good.
Recently went to the Iron Frog with some friends after hearing good things about their food (and let's face it, the Yelp deal didn't exactly hurt). Â While the atmosphere and bar situation is pretty bland, the excellent food and service more than made up for it.
We started with the pork belly sliders and the fried risotto balls. Â If you have the stomach for the sliders, you should absolutely go ahead and punish yourself. Â Sure, you'll be burping up pig for awhile, but those things are absolutely delicious. Â And the risotto balls are perfectly fried and served with a creamy parmigiana sauce which really makes it work.
The main entrees didn't seem particularly impressive from the menu, so we all tried the daily special: wild boar ragu. Â We were not disappointed. Â The boar itself wasn't particularly gamey, and it suited the pasta and sauce very well. Â It was almost the perfect amount of food, too. Â Filling but not oppressive.
Our waitress was young but very attentive and had a really good attitude.  They also had a  table-side magician on Friday nights who was not altogether unimpressive.  It was mostly sleight of hand stuff, and his comedy material was pretty sad, but there was something kind of charming and adorable about it anyway.
If I wanted to find a place to have a few drinks with friends, I'm not sure I'd consider Iron Frog the right spot. Â But if I wanted to eat some gastronomical delights and good service in the Simsbury area, you could do a whole lot worse than the Iron Frog.
Driving by on Saturday night, we could see this place was packed. Â The street was lined with cars, but we still managed to find a spot in the lot around back. Â The Iron Frog is located in some sort of restaurant compound. Â I believe there are four restaurants all attached.
Walking in, it's nice, clean, well-lit. Â They have a dining side, and a tavern side. Â We chose the tavern side. Â It's not so much a tavern as a dining area that happens to have a bar in it. Â No dimly lit booths to sit and drink in all night, but plenty of tall bar tables positioned around the bar, and another dining area off to the side. Â There is also a deck, but it appeared to be closed. Â
Our hostess was pleasant, and grabbed us from the bar after the short wait for a table/booth. Â The booth was comfortable. Â One of my buddies is about 6'3" and part yeti. Â He slid in and out of there without a problem, so you should have plenty of space. Â Somebody was over to our table within a minute to check on the drink situation, and the waitress didn't take much longer.
To start, we ordered the Pork Belly Sliders and the Risotto Balls. Â The sliders are "3 Miso glazed pork sliders served on portugese muffins with scallions, cucumber and sweet potato chips." Â It's a good thing we had three people, because nobody should eat all of these to the head. Â It's basically a piece of sausage and a block of fat on a roll. Â Try them. Â They're absolutely amazing. Â The sweet potato kettle chips on the side are also delicious. Â Okay, on to the Risotto Balls. Â The risotto was cooked to perfection, and the parmesan fondue it came with was great. Â They're big, deep-fried balls of goodness. Â I would definitely recommend trying them.
None of us ordered an entree off of the menu, instead opting for the wild boar ragu over pasta they had on special. Â The sauce was incredibly flavorful, and it had plenty of boar's meat. Â The pasta was some kind of long, broad, thick noodle that I'm a fan of.
The food was excellent, and the staff is competent. Â The bathroom situation is a little wonky. Â You actually have to leave the restaurant, and go use the communal bathroom in the compound. Â Hopefully, the actual dining area has its own bathroom. Â Overall, I was quite pleased with my experience. Â The tavern side doesn't strike me as anywhere you'd go hang out to be social and meet new people. Â It's more of a sit down and hang out with the people you came with type of place. Â So, stop in for a few drinks with dinner, but you may want to keep it moving if you're looking for a boozey night out. Â The Iron Frog is definitely worth a visit.
Meh.
Oh, I'm sorry. I was supposed to write more? Meh, meh... Â Unremarkable, average, stagnant air in the bar area. Bizarre crowd the night I was there. Seriously, it was a lot of mom's and what seemed to be newly legal daughters who still felt awkward about being seen with their parents in public. I doubt that's the norm but it wasn't a fun experience for my friends and I. We bounced after one drink.
My draft beer was aight though.
Sorry, I remain underwhelmed. Â I find the food definitely middle of the road. Â Steak sandwich on hotdog roll and a menu that attempts to be upscale with French's yellow mustard served with sandwiches. Â Ordered happy hour wine and was charged $8. Â No one to discuss this with because no one seems in charge. Â I give up on food here.
Review Source:Had lunch this afternoon at the Iron Frog. I have been here several times this past month and have as yet to be disappointed. Today I had the lunch special: crabmeat roll with lime/sriracha mayonnaise and fried parsnip curls with a side mesclun salad with their homemade balsamic vinaigrette (which they make to perfection). It was absolutely delicious - the chef is truly amazing! Try the organic chicken pot pie at dinner - light and full of flavor. The hanger steak salad is another winner.
The staff and owner make you feel very welcome and it has great ambience- Â it's now my absolute favorite in the valley.
Gastropubs? They actually exist?! These are like the unicorns of the culinary world, and they DO exist. I promise you. After eating at several bars trying to market themselves as such I had become disenfranchised with the term, but this is it. A modest little gastropub tucked away among the narrow side streets of Simsbury Center.
My advice, if you're here for the food I would stick to the specials or the things that don't sound boring. Skip the steak and cheese, go for the scallop special. It pays to be bold.
This place is among the growing ranks of places where you can call ahead and arrange a tasting, which I highly recommend. The fluke en papilotte they made us was crazy good. Spring salad with asparagus, lemon supremes and candied walnuts actually framed brussels sprouts in a delicious way. You heard me right: delicious brussels sprouts. The grilled, korean-style short ribs were f***ing amazing. It's refreshing to see a tavern actually rock out a nice plating.
I'm addicted to the asian pork sliders. Bits of crispy skin, delicious melty fat, and tender flesh pan out under a perfectly balanced salad of miso and scallions. I'm not a huge fan of pickles on sandwiches but even the paper thin pickles belonged there. The sweet potato chips they come with were a delicious accompaniment.
French fries, the yard stick of a competent chef? Crispy and delicious. Competency proven.
The scallops we had were the "dry", chemical-free kind, perfectly pan seared and served beneath shredded Brussels sprouts, candied walnuts and a blood orange, brown butter emulsion. I love well prepared scallops and while I was intimidated to try them at a bar, they were awesome.
They have a magician on Saturdays perusing the tables with sleight of hand for tips. You may hear the same speech a few times as he makes his rounds. Cheesy, but fun if you have a few kids in your party.
One last cool thing about this place, if you walk into the back around the corner, the kitchen is in plain sight. No shadiness unfolding behind closed doors. Very nice!
I really like this place. Â It's not perfect, but perhaps that's part of its charm.
Since my first review, we've been back several times. Â The menu has gotten a little more focused and, in my view, better.
On a recent visit, Plan B was packed at 6 p.m. (!) so we headed back over to our favorite. It was busy but there was a table to squeeze into. Â They have some table games in the corner for the kids to play and the usual crayons as well.
The server came over quickly. About 15-20 minutes in, our food wasn't there -- which really wasn't such a big deal. It seemed busy and everyone was happy.
Except the server apologized for the delay, brought over free chips & salsa and said our food would be coming out. And it did, in about 10 minutes. The owner brought the food out as quickly as it was ready from the kitchen -- so fast that my fries weren't yet done. But she said she didn't want to wait. Â
And she offered free dessert as well.
And the food, pretty great. The most recent visit featured a cheesesteak, while the kids got a delish mac n cheese. Â
Overall, with winsome attention like this, it's easy to see why this place has become a staple in the Farmington Valley. It's not perfect but with people who care about your experience, it's worth the time back.
I came to the Iron Frog to watch a friend of ours play at one of their Live Band nights. I expected a hole-in-the-wall, and was given a completely alternate experience: upscale, classy, and not too expensive. Their porch was lovely, and I had a great time. Great place to bring a date.
Review Source:Our first visit was very rewarding. We sat in the bar area as the dining room is being renovated. We were seated quickly and the waiter responded to our table right away.
Our Waiter was wonderful.
We had a tough time making our decision as the menu was extensive and full of great choices.
Our meal was very good and done to our specifications. No complaints.
The waiter was attentive but not hovering. Â
It's a great spot. Â I'll be returning.
Although the vegetarian selection is limited (I wish they'd make their own veggie or portabella burgers!), the quality of food was amazing. I had the crab roll with avocado and it was delicious! The sweet potato fries were also good. They offer a great beer selection and good ambiance for American fare. A big plus was getting a free draft beer from "checking in" on Yelp!
update: they have portabella burgers now!
Had dinner here the other night - on a Tuesday - it was quiet. Â Some action at the bar but overall a good feeling and mix. Â Definately some loud characters at the bar that could have calmed down a little but who am I to complain.
Ordered the boneless wings medicum they were good and had some kick to them. Â They cost $10 but has about 3 servings in it.
I ordered the mac and cheese with pulled pork - it was excellent and they kind of mixed the pulled pork into it which I enjoyed - Â also had to box this up and had it later for lunch with the wings.
L had a cobb salad and she could not finish it.
Overall was a pleasant experience, good food mid priced big portions.
I have tried to go here on a Saturday night the place is just too packed a nd frantic but would be a fun place to catch pub food and watch a band.
My husband and I did not have a good experience here whatsoever. This was largely at the responsibility of our server.
Our order was not put in correctly, and thus we were forgotten about. After an hour of waiting our food was hurried and less than worth the wait or $$$. Consequently our mussels, appetizer of sweet potato fries, and salad were all served at the same time.
The crostini with the mussels was served in its stale-pre toasted state. The cream drizzled over the crostini did not mix well with the broth. Plus no little fork, only a soup spoon and dinner fork to pull each out.
My salad did not arrive with the dressing on the side, so I waited for our scattered server & asked for oil and vinegar, then waited again for honey balsamic to arrive. She offered us a dessert for free but we waited and waited again and just wanted to get out of there. Our waters were forgotten about and took equally as long to be served.
Our server apologized but her game needed to be stepped up at the realization that we were forgotten and it didn't. All together our experience took 2hrs.
Who led the NHL in goal scoring in the 2009-2010 regular season? Â Was it Ovechkin? Â Nope. Â Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Â Really? Â Really.
This is one of the many facts that I've learned in my few experiences here on Wednesday night, aka Trivia night.  It's  a good time and draws a good crowd.  Worth checking out if in the area.  Prizes and fun stuff for the Champs.  A second place finish is all we could muster up.
On another occasion, I stopped here for a couple of beers and what I hoped would be lunch. Â I had two $3 Sierras during their happy hour. Â I also ordered the boneless wings for $10. Â I thought $10 was a bit much for 10 boneless wings, but figured they would be big.
But they were not. Â It was a small order and did really put much of a dent in my hunger. Â My buddy ordered a burger and it was undercooked, close to rare when medium was requested. Â However, it looked pretty tasty to me.
This is a good place to have a few cocktails. Â The deck is really nice and the overall layout is equally a nice one. Â The staff is great. Â Service is prompt and friendly.
That being said, this would not be my top choice of places to eat in the area. Â If you want wings, go to Green Tea and get the Fujo Wings. Â They are half the price and twice the size.
Iron Frog: Â Not highly recommended, but worth a shot.
Well Simsbury or Simplebury or Simpleboring is collecting quite a gastronome! With Little City Pizza, Â The Meadows, Brookside Bagels, Metro Bis, The Iron Frog is a strong and comfortable addition. I live in NYC but grew up here and love that there is another great place to eat when I visit. The Pulled pork is solid! The Hanger steak is better than good. The burger is good and rivals any from Plan B, Â the drinks and atmosphere are right up there with the best. Frank is the perfect proprietor, equal parts warm, funny, and entertaining.
Frog legs were a "tad" disappointing, Â The Fondue was almost like Switzerland!! There you go this place gets 8 peppers out of 10.
OH the Wednesday before Thanksgiving! Â
I came home from the bustling city of Boston to the amazing town I grew up in, in Connecticut. Â My good friend Robbie was playing a Jazz gig at a bar "downtown", which I had never heard of... The Iron Frog. Â Let me tell you, I have seen the other five or so restaurants that have come through this location and I believe that they have found a winner! Â This place is unique and charming.
The part I found the most interesting and I instantly had to try one, was off their drink menu. Â This drink was called "pond water," but since I am more of a whiskey drinker, I got the "pond scum" instead. Â I thought this drink was crafty enough to make me laugh ever so slightly out loud. Â I'm looking to come back here in Christmas and whenever I roll back into town.
In general, this place is fun & inviting!! This has all the makings of a hip, affordable & happening place to have a casual drink, lunch, or mid-week or weekend night out with pub-fare food, no matter your age!
