Itza Sports Bar

It has a lot of potential. The place originally opened up as Itza Taco. They had a good idea for the area. There is only a couple places with the TVs really necessary to be called a true sports bar in the area and only a few of them show UFC fights. My first time going was to see a fight and while the atmosphere for the fight was great the food at that point was fairly terrible. They shutdown not too long after and reinvented themselves as Itza Sportsbar. I have to say it was a big improvement.

Today I went for the first time under the Itza Sportsbar banner. I ordered the seafood rice which was a decent dish. It had shrimp, andouille sausage, scallops, chicken and a cajun rice. My main issue is that the rice is cooked in a tomato sauce that seems to overpower the seafood taste. When I ordered it I was picturing a paella type dish. Paella has a more even flavor mixture than this particular dish. It is fairly good though but I would work on toning down the strong tomato flavor.

The appetizer was wings. The wings were average. I ordered hot and as usual I thought they needed more of a kick. That is just personal taste though. They had a good bit of meat but not so much that it overwhelmed the sauce. They did not have the crispy skin that I love on wings which brought down my rating of them a bit.

The other dish at the table was the grouper. It got positive reviews and the highlight of the meal for me was stealing a few of the homemade chips off that plate. There is only one or two other places in McDonough that go through the trouble of making their own chips and these were very good. Next time around I'll have to try the appetizer version that comes with blue cheese crumbles.

My final verdict is that the food has become decent enough to make this a regular 'event' type place. If there is a fight, game or event I want to watch I can make this my go to place in the area. I won't just be going for the food though. There are too many better options around.
