since we didn't know the area on our first morning in Hurricane, i did a quick Yelp search for breakfast (to which my brother replied "what's Yelp? before being slapped for sacrilege). JB's was the only place that showed up and that was open at 7am and that served "regular" breakfast food as my meat eating brother likes to call it.
the place was basically empty but we had to wait for a table. the coffee was pretty bland, standard restaurant coffee. the breakfast buffet was financially the best deal considering i eat twice my body weight in breakfast. it had plenty to choose from: biscuits, gravy, sausage, bacon, all of which i did not try. i had a couple of pancakes, some french toast, regular scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs with peppers, the oatmeal, a bowl of cottage cheese with added fruit, pudding (i think), and some granola with yogurt. and then i went back for a little more. the strawberries were red on the outside, but white on the inside. the fruit cocktail was straight from a can. surprisingly, the pancakes and french toast were both good.
but i just needed a belly full of breakfast and this place sufficed. we didn't go back for our other 2 mornings in Hurricane, however, our waitress and the manager were both very friendly. but i don't like it when i can hear staff complaining from the service area about their ex boyfriends/husbands getting arrested and other sundry personal complaints.
Here for breakfast on 5/26/2012. Â Didn't know what to expect when we walked in. Â Found out it is part of a chain of restaurants. Â Though the inside of the place looked a bit sketchy, at first, we were happily surprised that the food was good and the service was excellent. Â I had the "pot roast omelet" that was very, very good; the meat was like the meat that falls off the bones of short ribs. Â They also had a breakfast buffet table that was packed with all types of breakfast food. Â Good food at a fair price.
Review Source:Living in the general area, I've passed JB's many dozens of times without much thought of stopping by, though based on the cars in the parking lot, it seemed to have a pretty steady stream of business compared to lots of other restaurants in Hurricane.
Two things had kept me out of JB's until tonight:
1. A report from friends who ate there & said the food was mediocre, & the service was horrible (waitress was just in a very bad mood & didn't try to hide it).
2. Knowing that several other JB's locations here in SW Utah had gone out of business (such as the one that was in St George) in early 2011. Â I was concerned that maybe this location too would be closing soon, and in the meantime, would be cutting costs in a way that wouldn't be favorable to diners.
But on my way home from work tonight I decided to stop-by to see the place for myself.   I got there at 6PM, and was seated promptly.  Based on a fire marshal's sign, they have a seating capacity of 150, but there were only about 13 customers, mostly pairs.
I took a quick look at their soup/salad/fruit bar & then sat down to look at the menu.  I suppose a nice thing about JB's is that it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be like.
It's traditional American stuff like you'd expect to find at a Denny's (JB's could probably be described as a more low-key, local/small-chain version of Denny's minus the late-night bar crowd) -- couple different types of burgers, sandwiches, pasta, steaks/meat, breakfast items (served all day) & desserts.
Unfortunately for me -- a vegetarian -- one thing they do NOT really have is *ANY* sort of vegetarian entree.  Even here in conservative, old-fashioned SW Utah, most places will have at least a couple vegetarian items on the menu, but not JB's.   I told the waitress I was a vegetarian (I kind of whispered it, so as not to give any of the old folks eating their liver & onions any distress) & that I was wondering if I could either get a pasta dish with just marinara sauce, or a mushroom & onion omelet.  I really didn't want breakfast (again) today, but for whatever reason, she steered me to the omelet, which came with toast & hash browns.
For only $2.99, I did add the salad, etc. bar & helped myself to it.  It's pretty basic, definitely NOT worth the $7 or $8 to get it on it's own, but an OK $2.99 add-on if you've ordered an entree & are pretty hungry.   Some of the dressings had developed a surface coating indicating they hadn't been served or stirred lately & I avoided those, but the greens were fresh & my salad was OK.
The omelet was OK.  It was probably better than just OK, but since I'd already had eggs for breakfast 12 hours earlier, psychologically, I'm forced to just say that they were OK this time.  It did come with two full pieces of toasted, buttered bread, and the hash browns.  The Hash browns were also "OK," but it's entirely possible as far as I'm concerned that they were re-heated leftovers from the morning breakfast rush.
JB's does have a breakfast bar in the morning & some sort of Sunday brunch, and I am curious about both.  If I do go back to JB's, it'll probably be to investigate the brunch, but otherwise, as a vegetarian *and* someone who is still well-under the age of 60, I think I'll leave JB's to the local old-timers & pre/post church crowd.
If you're just passing-thru Hurricane to go to/from Zion or somewhere else, I'd suggest that unless you're in a hurry for breakfast or a Sunday brunch, or have 50 people with you, that you skip JB's & keep looking on Yelp for somewhere else to try.
Oh, in case it matters, JB's doesn't have their own wifi, but you get a nice, strong open wifi signal from the motel that's directly across the street.
