Big fan of Mexican food. From Ensenada to Yuma to San Diego. The best Pollo Asada burrito iv'e ever had. Had this same burrito at their other locations too. Same, excellent. Be ready to get a 2.5 lb. tasty meal. Yes it's massive yet crazy good. To be honest it's the only thing I have ever ordered. Every time I drive down to Ocotillo Wells this place is a must. Seriously !
Review Source:Seems like a regular taco shop, only way out in the boonies - a good place to stop when you are coming back from Mt. Palomar or the La Jolla Indian Reservation. We stopped in for a late lunch, and I got a Pollo Asado Torta.

The torta was pretty huge, and had fresh grilled or sauteed bell peppers as well as pollo asado, guacamole, etc. One side of the sandwich didn't have much pollo, but the other side had a good amount. One little bit of gristle.
A friend of mine got a california burrito, and looked pretty good. Another friend got carne asada fries, and it looked like the standard epic of giant plate of fries with carne asada and guacamole.
Salsa was good, and if you don't like their drink selection, you can walk into the convenience store next door for a bigger selection.
They had a TV, but it was turned onto an informercial the whole time. after a while we started watching it because it needed to be mocked.
Gets 4 stars because of perspective: I was a big fan of being able to eat quick taco shop food in the middle of "nowhere".
Keeps the 4 stars because it was pretty tasty and the pico de gallo was rife with cilantro--- like it should be.
We kept it simple and shared:
---- a Rolled Taco combo plate: Four rolled tacos covered in a ton of guacamole and some authentic smelling/tasting Mexican shredded cheese... Â accompanied with a bit more flavorful beans than usual for a taco shop and waaay better rice than usual. (The rolled tacos only came with shredded beef... no problem there, but the flavor wasn't too high, good news for us they covered it in guac and with pico de gallo it was sooo good)
---- a Quesadilla: not too grilly but the the tortilla was delish. Lotta cheese in there but I guess they'd better pack it in at $3 a pop.
The salsa bar was a little meager but did the trick and had the basics I was looking for: that red-orange salsa that's everywhere, salsa verdes and pico de gallo (with lots of cilantro).
Would I stop here again if I was driving through? Frankly... yes. It's that or the other Jilbertos (or the casino's overpriced food). So when you're out for cheap eats and there's only Jilbertos and it's other brother, Jilbertos, what do you pick??? JILBERTOS !!
When you are feeling helplessly hungry in the middle of nowhere, a.k.a. Valley Center, you might stop into this place. Â We stopped by there after a little hike up at Palomar State Park. Â Figured it would be better than searching Escondildo for a place to eat.
Since San Diego is flooded with Mexican food, I have to say this place was fairly average. Â The food was a little greasy. Â I bought a California burrito since the combos all seemed redundant. Â I did like that tax was included in the price. Â The hot sauce was edible and not overboard on the vinegar.
I came here on Sunday morning with 2 friends and we basically all ordered back to back, yet somehow my friends got their burritos AND FINISHED them before I even got mine. It must have been 10 minutes + Of course I was angry  Person after person was getting their orders and I was still waiting. As we were about to leave I approached the cashier for a refund and he told me I was up next and that my burrito would be free and apologized.
To make a long story short I did get the burrito but no refund. I think the cashier didnt even place my order until I came over to speak with him. I would not waste my time ever stopping at this place again.
Basically the only fast food for miles around, it was a former regular stop for us when we lived in Pauma Valley. They have the usual Mexican taco shop favorites and even have breakfast. Great salsa bar. Conveniently located next to a...convenience store, it's the best option for noshing if you want to avoid the casino. For somewhere a bit nicer (i.e.; sit-down) head west to the El Rey.
Review Source:I dunno.......ambience, 2, maybe 1 stars. Â Food.....3.5 stars. Â Rounded out to about 3 stars. Â Fact I didn't get shot up.........4 stars. Â
This place will be the Olympics for your colon. Â No, really. Â
We stayed at a little bed and breakfast up the way from this restaurant, and, seeing as though the Valley View casino had sold out tickets for the buffet, this was the only viable option for dining around this area.
On the plus side, however, they DID get an "A" health rating (you know you're eating "real" chicken and not something else......)
But seriously, food is a little on the greasier side. Â It's pretty good, but I guarantee food is fried/cooked in either lard/vegetable oil. Â Twice. Â That carne asada burrito just sat in my belleh as I was going to sleep. Â No indigestion, just heavy eats.
As I've said before in my reviews, my bar for Mexican food is high. Â Therefore, three stars for Jilberto. Â
As Jim Carrey says in Ace Ventura, "do NOT go in THERE........WHEW!!!"
My wife had an engagement shoot to do out here, so we thought we would hit up Valley View for their buffet(that we hear so much about) Â Â Anyhow, line there was crazy, so we left. Â Came across this place while stopping for some water, and was i glad that we did. Â
place is not fancy by any means, which is fine by us. Â menu was expansive, as were the inexpensive meals that we ordered. Â my chicken burrito was good and greasy, and my wife proclaimed it her favorite burrito yet, and wished that it was closer. Â if you are in the area, and hungry, it's worth a shot.
Me: Â "I'd like a drink, machaca plate, and a chicken burrito togo."
Woman taking my order: Â "real chicken burrito?"
Me: Â ...
*I didn't ask what she meant but of course I opted for the "real" chicken.. Â Street style mexican food.. around 7.00 for plates and 5.00 burritos. Â Large menu including breakfast plates. Â Runny chile and food could use more flavor. Â But there really wasn't anywhere else to eat around here. The closest restaurant around was another Jilberto's Taco Shop.. there must be a surplus of real and unreal chicken around here.
Authentic.
Dropped in after my latest escapade of cycling lunacy (a non-warm up assault on South Grade Road up Mount Palomar).
After such a ride (12 miles out in 1 hour 24min, and a return trip in 26 minutes), the hunger is peaked, and Jilbertos meets the demand.
I had the Beef Machaca breakfast plate. Â Awesome Machaca, with generous portions of beef, onions, peppers and more ... and the beans and rice were good. too.
The tortillas were fabulous.
Mis amigos had a Veggie Burrito and a Chile Relleno Burrito, and both raved.
Do not expect great service, just authentic food ... and seeing as this is a location that you would end up in only if you really NEEDED some food, it will always be wonderful.
So ... Go Ride a Bike UP Mt Palomar, and then eat here.
It is worth it.
