Boy, am I pissed that Bob M. beat me to the "first" on this place.  I meant to write this review a few days ago, when it was still virgin territory, but I waited and Bob M. beat me to it.  I mean, I'm not pissed AT Bob M., just mad that he beat me.

Anyway, the day I went to KJ's must not have been Sysco day.  I ordered a veggie sandwich from this bar/diner, and was pleasantly surprised to get a generous serving of very fresh - not frozen - vegetables on lovely sourdough with white cheese melted over them.  The tomatoes in particular, were wonderful.  They were of the cherry variety, and looked and tasted like they'd just been plucked from somebody's garden.

The KJ Café is the new name to an obviously older place. There is still the cool old sign of the Wheel Café as you drive up to the business. It is situated right next to the Pilot Truck Stop, and while there is good parking to the side of the café, you do have to dodge semis to park. Despite this, getting in and out is pretty easy.

I'd love to report that all of that is worth the trouble, and hope with a little more time, this place will make it worthwhile. But as it stands right now, this is run by people that are doing a job and serving product supplied by Sysco or some such supplier.

We had grilled sandwiches; he had the pastrami, which was comprised of thickish slabs that were not tasty on standard issue grilled white bread. It came with fries that you have had in a hundred such places. I had the patty melt that was not bad but as food to fill up on, not to really enjoy. I asked for a recommendation on the potato salad, which she did, but seemed not particularly enthusiastic. You've had this from Sysco before, too.

So, it's a good place to fill up to get you to wherever it is that you are going, but it is a shame that it isn't more. It's a cute location and I hope that once they settle in, they will apply some homemade recipes rather than what comes out of a bucket, box or freezer bag.
