I was not going to waste my time but I feel compelled to. Just stopped in to have a quick lunch on the recommendation of a customer. Nonchalant hostess seated me fairly quickly with a menu. The menu was limited..no problem. Â I ordered shrimp and egg foo young. Not what I would usually order, but the vibe was this is a safe order. Very dated place, but you never know! I was brought warm Lipton tea, and the waitress asked what do I want. I placed my order. I was doing work related paperwork when my food appeared. Foo Young was nice with obvious veggies inside, but warm, not hot. Shrimp had obviously been fried in two??? Batches, one very overcooked, the other hot but extremely greasy. In addition, they were not only the smallest shrimp you could possibly fry, but the batter was terrible. I looked for my waitress and could not get her attention as she spent the entire time I was there talking with a co-worker. I just wanted some hot mustard. She never checked on me nor asked me originally if I wanted anything other than warm tea. This is in a very small town and my lunch was 8.75..no soup. I can go to nearby Eugene and have the same for less, with excellent service and hot green tea. After this greasy, cold lunch the waitress threw my check down and said "have a nice day".
Review Source:Highly recommend the mar far chicken and egg rolls. Could eat an entire meal of just those 2 items. Most of the dishes are moist, hot, and a touch heavy on the saucy side. The BBQ pork is also a must. Caramel iced skin and juicy meat. Good stuff. Pink sauce and Chinese hot mustard for the win.
Rice could be a bit less dry though. And the breaded shrimps are not the size I remember before. Also not a fan of the amount of breaking.
Other than that, this place is a great and tasty place to eat.
Kowloon's is the only place that I simply MUST visit while in Roseburg. Yeah, it's probably more because I grew up on this style of Chinese food more than anything else, but I just have to have it when in town.
Roseburg Chinese is unique. I have never found "shrimp sauce" at any other Chinese restaurant in the world. I like to dip my mar far chicken and bbq pork with a touch of hot mustard and this unique sauce and then add some sesame seeds--Roseburg-style.
To get exactly what I want, I have to be creative as the combinations do not come my exact way and only one substitution is allowed (unless Lai Fong is in the house of course and she takes pity on the crazy guy from out-of-town). Here are my must haves:
-Mar Far Chicken
-Pork Fried Rice
-Bean Sprouts BBQ Pork with Pan-Fried Noodles
-Sweet & Sour Spareribs (not SS Pork which would make the whole order thing much simpler)
-BBQ Pork
-Egg Rolls
By far my #1 Roseburg restaurant.
chicken far mar?
i think they mean sysco fried chicken with pink sauce. im not impressed.
i've eaten lots of cheep american chinese food and generally only review restaurants i like. this place is bad. if you are going for tough old deep fried chicken covered in the sauce of choice this is your place. ill pass.
First time to Roseburg with five other parents to attend a JROTC drill comp. Â We reviewed our options using Yelp and Trip Advisor and narrowed our selection to include Kowloon. Â After taking a straw poll....Kowloon it was.
Now, we were all a little tentative about trying an "unknown" Chinese food place but thru my encouragement about what was said on these two review sites, we set out to be adventurous.
First good sign was that the lot was 3/4 full on a Friday night about 6pm. Â
The wait was marginal....maybe 10 minutes for our group...so I did my "walk around" on the way to the restroom and glanced from side to side taking note of the dishes other patrons were eating and whether people seemed to be enjoying the meal. Â All good. Â The BBQ pork stood out to me as a favorite as most people had it on their tables and the portion looked huge.....tender and moist. Â Another favorite was what I later discovered to be Mar Far Chicken.
We were given the option of two different places to be seated....we chose the banquet room. Â I was expecting it to be more secluded, but it appeared to be just another section of the restaurant. Â Had they not given it the term "banquet room" I would have never guessed it to be any different from any other portion of the facilities.
Other families and large groups were already dining in the "banquet room" and we were given a booth. Â Which worked out great. Â Husbands on one side, wives on the other.
Service was prompt with water and tea.
I agree with another reviewer about the decor....nothing noteworthy. Â In fact, if the place weren't so busy and the food so good....you might even call it "dingy". Â But combined with the company I was with and the good time we were having, we just really didn't notice. Â But in hindsight...I would have to say it was definitely worn and comfortable. Â With the emphasis placed on food and portion size as opposed to atmosphere.
Again, as we were looking at the menu, we noticed the party across from us getting their food delivered and not only were the portions huge but it looked delicious. Â That prompted us to ask the waitress what "they were having" and she said, "Family dinner for four". Â We all agreed that sounded good but since there were more than four of us, we added a dish of Kung Pao Chicken and the BBQ pork appetizer.
One of the other husbands inquired about a beer on tap and the waitress had no problem bringing him a decent sized sample before he ordered a full glass. Â As it turns out, he really liked it and went for a full order. Sorry.....can't remember the name. Â Maybe "Dead Guy Ale"? It was a local brew though. Â The point is that I was impressed with the willingness to offer the sample.
The BBQ pork appetizer was served in no time and we all thought it was rather tasty. Â Again, we were not disappointed on the portion size. It really is "mounding"....just like I observed on my "walk around" before being seated.
Our main course arrived in what seemed to be about 10 minutes after the BBQ pork which was right on timing to continue with our meal.
The waitress brought it all out on a huge serving tray and we all appreciated that she left it set up at the end of the booth so as not to cram too many dishes onto our table. Â
There were lots of "Oooohs and Aaaaahs" over the dishes as we passed them around. Â Everything was very good. Â I noted that the fried rice was not "tan" or "brown" in color but appeared to be steamed rice with some green onion, egg and meat in it. Â I would wager it was due to a lack of cooking it with soy sauce and it made for a very delicious twist on your typical fried rice. Â We all like it. Â
The one thing we lacked was diligent service on keeping our water glasses filled. Â Whenever we asked, our waitress was prompt in coming right back to fill them....but.....it would have been nice to not have to ask a couple of times. Â A better option would have been to leave a pitcher at our table. Â Being that this was not a five star establishment, I cannot see why this would have been a problem.
Total bill for the five of us was $68 not including the tip. Â We had PLENTY of left-overs and all agreed it was a good dinner and a great value.
One of the best Chinese restaurants anywhere. Â Large portions, never greasy, always delicious. Â Not the best decor, but I'm there for the food. Always stop by when in town visiting family. Â Love the family meal with a group. Wife loves the mar far chicken. Fried rice is awesome. Â Pan noodles is another favorite. Â They sell the special sauce to take home, which we always get. Â Got the recipie from them, tasted like the original, but separated too quickly. Â Sometimes, they could cut the vegetables in smaller pieces, but the taste is still great. Â The BBQ pork appetizer is fantastic. Â Haven't tried the eggrolls, don't need the appetizers as the meal is huge.
Review Source:I ordered the egg roll appetizer and Kung Pao BBQ Pork dinner which came with steamed rice. Â I enjoyed the BBQ Pork, it was an extremely large serving (for at least four people) with loads of vegetables. Â I wasn't too fond of the egg rolls. Â Although ridiculously large, they just didn't seem right and also didn't taste all that great. Â They were dipped in a batter and fried, definitely something I've never seen before. Â
The service was a bit odd as well. Â The server brought me take out containers to pack my food and my bill before I was even done eating. Â It was only 8:10 and supposedly they didn't close until 9:30.
