This place had a great atmosphere and great,  friendly staff. The music selection was a trip.  I liked how the ice in my water was soft an my beer was very cold.  I ordered the sabana Blanca.  It was excellent.  The menu had alot of choices.  This place was very reasonably priced. The waiter also knew alot about the local news. You can tell this place has a real obsession with jalepenos

Just stopped here on my way to the bay, doesn't get much better! Food was outstanding and environment was clean and cozy. Also nice because it is right off the freeway. Highly recommend!

Locals favorite Mexican food... Chicken en creama was incredible, ask to add some spice. The fresh tortillas and salsa are the best. There  is a ton of great Mexican food in Te Central Valley, but this is a must stop....just off the freeway.

My familys been eating here since I was little and I'm in my late 20s now. It couldn't be run by a nicer family, the service is great and the food is absolutly amazing. The chile rellenos are the best I've ever had and the salsa and cabage are so good. Sometimes we stop by and pick some up on the way to a family BBQ.
Anytime I end up at a different Mexican food place I compare it to la morenita and there is no comparison, la morenita is the best.

When I first moved to Livingston, we took yelpers at their word that they knew what they were talking about. The food is.. eh alright. You can get full, and it can be tasty, but it just didn't move my family and I.

We've moved on to other places. You can check my reviews for Livingston if you want a suggestion.

This the best Mexican food in the Los Banos, Merced, Turlock area. The food is authentic and delicious!

Food is delicious if the cook would just get it right....Its a shame because I loved eating here until one day I ordered the Steak Enchilada meal to go and came home to eat only to find that there was no steak in my enchilada, only cheese :(

I haven't been back since. Prior to this there were different cooks and servers and I had pleasant dining experience with them.

My husband and I went here for dinner on New Years Eve. We'd read the great reviews and were impressed. Other than being difficult to find, it was a great experience. The front door is around the corner and on the back of the building. There is a donut shop and a tax prep office in the front. The homemade chips and salsa were delicious. We'd never had the cabbage salsa (?) before and it was a nice change. We had the pollo en mole and the pork chili verde. They were both excellent. It did not take overly long to get our meals. Time for a Dos XX while it was being prepared. I would certainly recommend this restaurant. The decor is nothing fancy. Suitably Mexican hole-in-the-wall style. They have some interesting items on their menu you don't usually find. A lot of shrimp items. I'll try them next time and there WILL be a next time!

I come here because I don't have much of a choice in Livingston.  The staff isn't very friendly or attentive.  The food isn't bad but it's not great either.  If your stuck in Livingston this or Foster Farms cafe is the way to go.  The chips are often over done.  At times they taste burnt.  The salsa has gotten extremely hot over the last few months.  If it gets any hotter it's going to be unbearable.  The carne asada meal looks like green sauce soup with carne asada at the bottom.  The compuesta is good.  I wish they used fresher lettuce though.  The beans are salty.  The tacos are good.

Just had dinner here last night, and it was excellent.  I used yelp to help pick, and it did not disappoint.  This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall place.    It's right off the freeway, so the location isn't really picturesque.  It probably seats 40-50 max inside, and at around 25 people it feels pretty full, but there is outdoor seating.  There's one bathroom, with one toilet, so no issues with picking the men's room from the ladies' room.

So with all that, how can it get 5 stars?  Well, I'd knock a star off for all those things, but in reality if I could give the food 6 stars I would.  Let me walk you through...

You sit down to a table of chips and salsa. The chips are warm and crisp - not too thick.  There are two salsas - a liquidy spicy flavorful red salsa for dipping, and a chunky cabbage, tomatino, jalepeno salsa for scooping.  (Note:  If they added spicy pickled carrots to the latter, I'd probably think I died and went to heaven.)

Once you've packed in some chips and salsa, you can move on to ordering from the menu, which has lots of variety.  Standard fare like tacos, enchiladas, etc are expected, but there are also lots of shrimp dishes and the milanesa that another yelper pointed out.

I chose #43 - the tacos abogahdo, which were tender steak cooked with onions, and then topped with salsa and avocado, and then folded into a flour tortillas that has been grilled with spices and onions.  I kid you not - to die for good!  My dad had the milanesa, and I can confirm what Victoria said - tender, flavorful, and tons of lime.

Entrees also come with the standard beans and rice, but just to be complete, these were top notch as well.  The rice wasn't dry and overcooked like a lot of places, and the beans nicely straddled the line between too creamy and too chunky.

This is my new favorite mexican food spot in the area when I'm visiting.  I'll be back a lot.

First of all to the two previous yelpers, I agree but... La morenita was easily my favorite Mexican restaurant growing up down the street like Joe. When I moved away from Livingston I too never found Milanesa like at La Morenita.   Their chips and salsa are the tastiest, their quesadilla supreme with carne asada is so good and their breakfast burritos with papas yum! Let's not forget the rice and beans soooo good. However, my favorite dish MILANESA with tons of lime!I like they use real mexican cheese and not any of that processed yellow cheese some Mexican restauranta use. If I see a Mexican restaurant use that I just order a cheeseburger. Haha. Anyway, lately though when I've been there the food doesn't taste as fresh as before. That is the only reason I give it four and not five stars.

I used to live around the corner from this place and would eat there at least once a week, always the best!!! I moved to San Diego and never found a place close to the quality at La Morenita in little ole Livingston, CA!! This hole in the wall has the best Mexican food you can find within a 50 mile radius. I recommend the huge carne asada Burrito Supreme with green sauce for $4, my favorite!! Domestic beers are only $2 and imported $2.50. Everything on their menu is excellent!!!

If you find yourself whizzing down that stretch of 99 through Livingston, know that, where there were once local joints like Blueberry Hill Cafe and not a chain in sight, staples like the original La Morenita restaurant still remain.  Countless family dinners here bred my affinity for Mexican food; once I even went so far as to ask my parents to bring me some when we met up in Frankfurt, Germany, for a tour of eastern Europe while I was still with the Peace Corps in Ukraine.  Hey, I had to have my taste of home.

There isn't a bum dish on the menu, although sometimes the sauces can be eye-watering spicy and the half-compuesta dish (your choice of puerco, pollo, or asado topped with salad on a deep-fried tortilla) can be watery.  But the pollo en crema is rich, the enchiladas in chile colorado are win-win, the chile verde sort of resembles a stew with its chunks of pork bathing in a pool of tomatillo sauce, and the pollo a la parilla remains my dish of choice before I die.
