The Sunday jazz is, more often than not, fantastic, and the Lamprey is a great place for mimosas (very strong!). The daily drink specials are super cheap and halfway decent, too. If you're vegan, the kitchen doesn't know what that means and will not prepare a vegan meal for you even if you ask, so you should just go for the cheap drinks.
Review Source:Well, let's just say that we refer to the Lamprey River Tavern as the "lesser tavern" and some other not so nice terms...
My boyfriend lived directly behind the tavern for a few years, so we ended up here quite a few times out of convenience. Generally, when the other tavern was full (Cinco de Mayo comes to mind) or after very long nights for Sunday brunch. The food is pretty mediocre, as are the drinks.
a frustrating place for me to visit. Â The food assortment is pretty good and the themed nights are fun BUT (big but) Â The service is the worst. Â I will never pan a place because the service is bad on one visit. Â Everyone and every establishment has a bad day. Â Unfortunately I have walked out on 3 different occasions after sitting down and being ignored by the waitstaff for 20 minutes or so. Â There is just so much potential to be a great place but they spend to much time focusing on being the local watering hole for the collage crowd. Â sorry I can't rate it higher,,,,work on the customer focus - Higher more staff but I can't say I will go back so I can be ignored again.
Review Source:Ugh sorry. We came in after a show at the Stone Church... the waitress seemed like she wanted nothing more than for us to leave. We realized we should have done just that after trying the food.
Given, pub food for vegetarians is usually no special treat, but this was especially bad. We got something that was described as being "crostini." Yes, maybe I was too hopeful and definitely should have just ordered a side of fries... what came out was a pita from the grocery store, microwaved with canned artichoke and processed cheese, alongside mediocre hummus and celery. Our fault for ordering it, but if you're not going to put in any effort, don't put it on the menu!
The scowls on the faces of everyone around us made us feel like this wasn't exactly a hiccup. Newmarket is a super cute town, but the Tavern is not a highlight.
Went to the Jazz brunch at the Lamprey River Tavern and had a wonderful meal with great music to relax by.
My husband had the biscuits and gravy breakfast and said it was the best he'd had. It came with a really nice side of spicy sausage patty and home-fries. The gravy was not your typical bland biscuit gravy but tasted like it was made with some of the same sausage.
I had the french toast, which they make either with french bread for a cruncher version or Portuguese sweet bread for a softer version. I opted for the latter, added some maple smoke bacon and real maple syrup, it was superb.
This is a busy place and the waitstaff have to do it all. (there is not a bus boy to bus tables.) If you need to grab a quick breakfast or are annoyed when you have to wait, go elsewhere. But if you enjoy quality home cooked breakfasts with lots of options then The Lamprey River Tavern is worth your time.
One note, some web sites have them opening at 10:30 for brunch, they actually open at 9:30.
Also a great bar to just drop in and chill. Â I recommend it!
Newmarket is a great little town, and the Lamprey River Tavern is in the center of it. Â The tavern serves a wide variety of good food for a pub. Â The jazz brunch on Sundays is always jamming and live bands often play on Friday or Saturday nights. Â The huge TV's always seems to have some Boston or UNH game on, so if its a game you want to catch in a pub, this might be the place.
