A Broasted Pork Chop to die for!  Yum!   Nice sized portions and very friendly and attentive waitress made for a satisfying evening meal.  This was much more than we expected from a gas station restaurant!

Ate lunch here Saturday with a group of 8. Very good service and the food was excellent. It is trypical of an interstate diner, but I tend to favor places such as these over the corporate owned places you typically see. The pies here are amazing. Definitely worth the stop.

Bring a flyswatter!  We were seated at a booth in the main area in front of the kitchen (as opposed to the dining room in back) and were immediately swarmed by flies - at least 5 or 6 just at our table.  Kinda gross.

That said, the food was good.  I ordered a pork tenderloin for the first time in years and it was delicious - the breading was really good and it wasn't greasy as I was expecting.

Prices are reasonable - sandwiches are $7-8 and come with two sides - I had the fries - not good or bad, just fries; and a caesar salad.  Although the lettuce had a bit of brown, I was pleased that the dressing came on the side and wasn't drowning the salad.

Service was average.  Since this appears to be the only restaurant (other than Subway) at this exit, I would recommend it for a quick bite if you're passing through on I-80.

This place just went through a major overhaul and remodeling this fall.  They now feature a breakfast buffet, flat panel TVs, and they now serve wine & beer.  It still has huge portions and they still turnover tables pretty fast.

I'm a little biased because my grandmother, God rest her soul, worked here for many years and we would always have to stop in here at some point on any extended visit.

That said, this place is basically the epitome of what a greasy spoon interstate truck stop is supposed to be, in terms of food, ambience, service, prices, or whatever measuring stick you care to use.  The highlight for me has always been the hot roast beef sandwich (fries on the side, not mashed potatoes glopped on top, thank you very much!).

I mean, the place has a life-sized totem pole out front.  Just out there for no reason other than to be seen from the interstate.  How awesome is that?  What more do you people want?

I am not sure if I should give this poor excuse for a restaurant an extra pity star.

When we entered this defunct truck stop restaurant our names were placed on a list. We waited not for people to leave, rather for tables to be cleaned. Once the middle-aged flustered host sat us our server made up for the less than cleanly dining room with her charm. She was a throw back to Mel's Diner, full of spunk and always on top of whatever you needed before you needed it.

The food was mediocre, I had the country fried steak with sausage gravy, both of which were so greasy that I could have sopped up the excess and used it to fry another steak. The coffee was fresh, but the syrup came not in traditional containers, rather in small disposal plastic containers much like jellies come at Village Inn.

The only way I would ever find my way back to this place is if I were supremely hung-over and in need of GREASE.

Now I'm not giving this place 3 stars because it's in BFE Iowa, it's all in context, people....all in context: truckstops and diners in the Midwest, god bless 'em all.  I love truckstop/diner food and I know what good greasy Midwestern truckstop food is supposed to be like and this ain't it.

On the last leg of my trip, I stopped off in BFE to see an old childhood friend and since all the local places in her town were closed, we had to go out to the interstate to grab some grub.  My friend had the chicken Caesar which was mediocre at best (and this was expecting over-doused salad).  And since I was in Rome (or central Iowa), I did as the truck drivers would do and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries.  The burger was a frozen patty (which is expected) but cooked (or dunked in grease) so that it was the greasiest slab of frozen meat that it could ever wish to be.  And the fries?  I WISH they were frozen Ore Ida.  They were soggy and just poor excuses for fries.  Now I know I'm not being harsh because I've been to a billion greasy spoons and had great burgers and fries.  Well, don't fret, dear friends, I still inhaled the entire platter.

So as far as the food, it's a 2-star.  But it's cheap, the coffee pot is an abyss (and super cheap), and this kind of place is where the real "Flo" type waitresses work.  I really think she might of told me to "kiss her grits."  So 3-stars for that!
