I've seen reviews around the internet (not on yelp specifically) where people complain of the price of this place. They're insane. Â
I went for the first time as an adult today. The place was packed but we were seated right away. There was a wait that formed a few moments after we walked in. You can get something off of the buffet which I glanced at one the way in. It looks like a good assortment of seafood and vegetable for a decent price. Its higher than some buffets out there but you're getting real seafood which makes a big difference.
I chose to go a different route and got the all you can eat boiled shrimp, fries, a salad and some hushpuppies. The shrimp was a decent size but I think they may be boiled in water that needs some extra spices. They weren't bad shrimp at all but they also werent anything to get particularly excited about. The cocktail sauce, however, more than made up for any lack of flavor. Their sauce is either a brand Ive never bought from a store or homemade and I'm pretty sure its homemade. I hate cocktail sauces that are too sweet and this one isnt sweet and has tiny little kick that I really enjoyed.
I once heard Paula Dean describe southern hushpuppies as hushpuppies that would float off the plate they were so light. She might of been describing these. The hushpuppies are quite good. The biggest thing that I would change is the fries. Their nothing but crinkle cut frozen fries thrown in a deep fryer. SO many places have fries these days that you need to do something to stand out. These were very bland and Id probably order a baked potato or grits next time out.
The key attraction to this place is the fried catfish. While I didn't have any on this trip others did. There were no complaints but like myself they largely left the fries untouched. We also ordered a blooming onion appetizer which was exactly what you would expect.
Bottom line, its a very good southern seafood place. They could use a bit more flair and maybe a bit of a menu update but their formula is tried and true and its clearly working. A solid seafood place and worth the drive out to Milner to eat there from time to time. There is nothing groundbreaking here but if you like fried catfish or boiled shrimp, don't want to hit a chain, and dont want to break the bank you'd be hard pressed to find another place as good as this one.
IF you love fried catfish, this is THE PLACE. Tender and delicious, with hush puppies to chase it down. They have other things here, but I don't know why you would come for anything else. You might give the strawberry shortcake a try, I had it the last time I was here and it was great!
Warning: If you don't like greasy food and are trying to eat healthy, you should go somewhere else instead. That doesn't stop some people, though -- I saw a man with an IV pole who (I overheard his wife telling the waitress) had just gotten out of the hospital THAT DAY from being admitted with a heart attack. He couldn't stay away, and neither can the rest of the crowd. Oh, and don't expect anything fancy. This is just a simple small catfish restaurant in the middle of nowhere!
