While the food is great, the decision to have live music in the dining room is a disaster. It was so loud it was impossible to speak to anyone at my table. Speaking of tables - they are crammed inside this place so that if you aren't in a booth you are on top of the table next to you. With half a dozen other tex-mex options within 1/2 mile of this one do yourself a favor and go elsewhere or just order to go!
Review Source:We constantly try all the mexican food places that pop up all over cedar park! Â This one is definitely our favorite! Â Great Margaritas I order the strawberry margarita with a shot of Herradera and it only takes one to get a good feeling.
The food is definitely a step above the rest to all the other places around! Â I will choose los chilaquilles over Dos salsas every day of the week!
We were pretty impressed with our first visit to Los Chilaquiles. The margaritas were large and boozy (also pretty expensive). The menu was a little unusual - it just seemed to us that it wasn't your standard same-old Tex-Mex menu items. Entrees all seemed to have some small twist to them.
My wife and I ordered some sort of fajita platter for 2 which included steak, chicken, shrimp, and sausage plus all the fixins. It was an enormous amount of food which is really saying something as I am frequently a member of the Clean Plate Club, which meant leftovers for the whole weekend!
The restaurant is very vibrant and colorful and the staff was extremely quick to refill the free chips and salsa. Overall it was a nice change-up from our usual Tex-Mex joints, but a teensy bit pricier and a teensy bit less delicious... but still good and we'd go back again.
Let's skip past the wonderfully entertaining decor and people; I can not remember the last time I went 'mmm' over baked beans! And that was just the beginning of the delicious meal. They use real and full ingredients in all their dishes- no corners cut on this tortilla! The only reason this review wasn't five stars? Our fried ice cream's batter was rubbery and chewy. The ice cream was great though! Will definitely be back. Check in on facebook and receive $5 off your bill!
Review Source:There are dozens of ordinary and uninspired Tex-Mex joints in the Cedar Park area. Â Most are within rock throwing distance of each other. Â Come to think of it they might ought to throw rocks at one another. Â So what's a Yelper in Cedar Park to do if driving a good distance isn't an option? Â We each cling to some version of Tex-Mex from the locally available Tex-Mex commodity traders for whatever reason we can conjure or explain. Â For me that is Los Chilaquiles. Â There are few things that make them stand out of the very crowded field for me. Â They are as follows:
A. Â So far I've never had to wait to get seated. Â Ain't nobody got time to wait for ordinary Tex-Mex.
B. Â They make table side guacamole. Â That's how you know its fresh people. Â And they do it for less $ than Pappasitos. Â Yes it tastes good.
C. They serve a very solid Tacos Al Pastor. Â Actually they call it Taquitos. Â It's not the best Al Pastor I have ever had but it's better than most I have encountered in this area and not every Tex-Mex restaurant offers this dish.
D. Â Attentive service. Â They keep the iced tea full. Â Sometimes they can be a little too attentive and check in and interrupt a really good conversation that is just getting some momentum. Â Better than drop and hide service I get at some places.
So they don't rock my world and they likely won't rock yours but maybe you'll find a reason to like them better than the other fish in the sea.
Decent food. Margaritas are strong but overwhelming with sour mix. $$$ for the quality of food. Would go here in a pinch, but not my first choice.
UPDATE: Been back since first review. Food has hit rock bottom. Margaritas had so much sour mix I couldn't even finish, due to heart burn. Steak fajitas were drowning in oil and as tough as leather.
01/26/2013, Saturday night a group decided to head over here even after my negative feedback. They arrive to reserve a table, 9:30pm on a Saturday night, no one is in the restaurant, and they turned us away because they close at 10pm. They must be really week in Math, because we had 30 minutes left. Truthfully, I was thankful. The group I was with would not listen to me, but the were greeted with the lousy customer service. So I at least was given the opportunity to say, " I told you so". I received a call and was told we were turned away. Thank god!!!! Los Chiliquiles did me a favor. But, I promise to never return to this place. Saturday night and you are closing up at 9:30pm. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha, can you say going out of business!!! You deserve it, the area is growing and there is so much to choose from. I can't understand why anyone would choose this restaurant. Â I changed my original 2 star to a 1 star. If I had a zero option that would be my rating. Â I support local businesses, but only those who deserve it. Â I will make sure to spread the word to all friends and associates. Turning the group away, bad move, you lost some loyal customers. Not I, but the rest of the group did patronize your spot until yesterday. I wish you good luck!
Tried this place last night on the recommendation of a friend. Service was excellent! Refilled our chips 3 times without needing to ask for them and were good about checking on us without being obnoxious. Salsa is HOT!! And queso was yummy. My chimichanga was only so-so hence only a 4 star rating. Decor is a bit...unique lol but overall try it out!
Review Source:I finally went there for a meal and was pleasantly surprised. we had some a minor issue with getting the wrong queso but they were very busy. The margarita was good, the guacamole made table-side was very good, the tortilla soup was very good, and the ceviche was decent (i've had worse and I've had better). However, i am just happy to have a place in Cedar Park where it is even possible to have ceviche. I was despairing of ever finding any in Cedar Park. This is my favorite Cedar Park restaurant.
Review Source:A+ for decor and atmosphere
C- on food
Stopped by for a very late lunch. Â I ordered one of the soups they had a picture of on the menu and asked what specials they had for Happy Hour. Â Waitress said it wasn't happy hour yet and all drinks were still full price. Â Wow, I was only 10 min off from Happy Hour and only 3 customers in the whole place. Â OK, I told her I needed some time to look at the menu.....When I ordered, it was 5 min off from Happy Hour and she didn't even offer to accommodate. Â Tea for me.
Soup I ordered didn't look anything like the picture and it had a very small amount of broth. Â Broth that was crystal clear without any flavor. Â The staff was very nice and the owner did a great job decorating but the quality of food I experienced was sub par.
Worst customer service I have ever experienced at any place of business. Â I walk into the establishment without any type of greeting and when I asked for a table the host (bald gentlemen, only one in the staff I believe) seemed to be bothered I asked for a table. Â I am seated and stepped away to the bathroom upon returning to my table I notice other customers seated there. Â I return to the host and let him know that someone is sitting at my table. Â He rudely barks that he did not give me a table but a booth and I said I know that but someone else is sitting there. Â I ended up turning around and walking out after dealing with this very rude host. Â
I attempted to contact the manager (Mina) several days in a row and was given the run around by the staff saying she was not available.  I left  a couple of messages, one with Chris and another with another staff member and was never contacted by Mina. Â
Be aware there is no management on site to handle the staff and I feel this is why the host acted the way he did.
Outside looks like any normal restaurant, the inside looks like a pinata exploded!
Bring some shades to eat because there's some bright colors up in here. Decided to Yelp a Mexican restaurant at a spur of the moment and found this place. The strip mall hid the vibrant decor inside. Not much of a wait on a weekday afternoon.
The drinks were cold and reasonably priced for happy hour (2-3 dollar range). The appetizer queso was pretty good along with the complimentary chips and salsa.
I'd like to think I'm a barbacoa connoisseur and this place exceeded my barbacoa expectations!! Such a large and filling portion. The beans and rice were nothing fancy, just your average sides.
The waitress was slow to come around the table even though there wasn't much people here. I 'd give it one more star if the service was a bit better.
There is a LOT of mexican food places around here, and almost all are tacky, dirty and cheaply designed like all the Jardin's dumps. To start off with, Los Chilaquiles has a very clean look and feel, tables stay clean, the bar is awesome, and the interior design trumps all mexican restaurants around here aside from Vivos. There is fun artwork all around to look at. As far as the food, it is fair priced, and very tasty. I had the cheese enchiladas, my typical dish, but became a fan immediately. The hot sauce had a great flavor and SPICY, loved it. Their Margaritas and beeritas were delicious. Im a fan and will keep coming back.
Review Source:I was passing through Cedar Park and saw this place, decided to go in for a little late lunch. It is very neat little Mexican spot with great decor. The service was prompt when I sat down at my table. Â This place is a step above other tex mex places around Austin, and still a very good value. I will be back the next time I am in Cedar Park.
Review Source:Unfortunately, subsequent visits started going downhill. Service became slower, and the food quality began fluctuating. Â Orders were incorrect, and the good varied from very good to pretty nasty. Â Then they changed their menu options, removing some of the lower priced options (that actually provided the amount of food I wanted) with higher priced options (now with more food than I could eat.) Â Once it was clear it wasn't a rough patch, they fell off our radar. Â Much better experiences at Los Reyes just down the road.
Review Source:Ok people, READ these reviews and consider the sources. Most of the negative reviews are from narcissistic self-proclaimed food "critics" who have a palette for one certain style of food and anything that doesn't fit that template is crap to them. They don't want to try new things for the sake of adventure, they want to give good reviews to "safe" and "popular" places so they can fulfill their dreams of being famous food critics.
Then there are people who actually LIKE food, not just the attention they get from reviewing food places for their vegan, hipster friends. "Typical suburban Tex-Mex?" Seriously? I've eaten at Mexican food restaurants all over the country (not just SoCo and Austin), and not so I could be a "food critic extraordinaire" but because I LOVE Mexican food. With that said, this is some of the best Mexican food I've eaten. Definitely in my top 5, and it's my husband's favorite.
This is the OPPOSITE of suburban Mexican food, that's why the cars are there. But do listen to Susan H. This is NOT "the place to be seen." All the people eating here are here because the food is great, not because they want to climb the social food ranks of Leander, TX.
People who truly love Mexican food know that it is all different. Mexico is a very diverse country and there are many different styles of Mexican food native to the various regions. Just like "American food" applies to an extremely wide variety of foods, so does Mexican food. Even within certain regions of American food, you have a huge variation of style - food in Louisiana is drastically different than food in Texas. Therefore, there isn't a such thing as "good Tex-Mex" that's a "foodie" phrase. People who like Tex-Mex know that Tex-Mex in the valley is different from Tex-Mex in El Paso. Â
The point is that Chilaquiles represents a style and region that is different from your usual cookie-cutter Mexican restaurant. It is not so much that it is "the best" as that it is extremely unique to our area. And isn't that really why we go to more than one restaurant....because we just want something different from time to time?
So if you want to be seen by "the right people" or if you want organic vegan food or upscale dining, there are tons of places in Austin to cater to that niche. However, if you want to TASTE good food, something different, something you've never had before, pull into the packed parking lot and get your eat on!
We went for the first time on Thursday and were pleased with our dining experience.
The atmosphere is quite pleasant for a strip mall location and they have done a good job on decor. The bar has one of the best assortments of alcohol that I have seen in the area.
The menu is a departure from the other similar restaurants in the area with many unique items to choose from.
Service was very friendly and attentive and the food was quite good.
Absolutely LOVE this Place!!! Food is amazing, Drinks are amazing and the Staff is WONDERFUL!!! We try to go at least once a week!!! Bathrooms smell a little funky lately ( I guess they are having some plumbing issues) . But don't let that scare you off. The place is Clean, affordable and yummy :)
Review Source:This is a great place in Cedar Park! The food is wonderful and has depth of flavor. Endless yummy chips and salsa, great deals on beer every night, great Margi's! The wait staff is very friendly and I like the feel of a family restaurant that makes their customers a priority.
Good bar too with sports on TV, but the sound does not disturb the dinner quests.
Food is typical of a suburban Tex-Mex restaurant. The service was overbearing; our waitress came to check on us way more than necessary.
There are about 8 items on the lunch special, about $5. Entrees come with soup or salad, choice of beans, and some rice. The food is of average quality, the chips were fine, and the salsa was alright.
Nothing worth raving about, but it's a fine place to get Tex-Mex for cheap in a nicer atmosphere.
Another Mexican restaurant in Cedar Park, I guess 15 aren't enough. At least they have alcohol which puts it in the To Try category for Friday night dinner. I was surprised how packed this place was last Friday. No booths left so we were seated at a table. Â First thing I found were the chairs were not comfortable. Yes, they had a cushion on the bottom but it didn't help plus my chair wobbled.
After looking at the drink menu with mostly beers and margaritas, I asked our waitress if they can do a Dirty Martini. Of course, she said (Liar, Liar, pants on fire.). Chips and salsa came out while waiting for our drinks. Nothing special, so we pushed them to the side.
The drinks arrive, and I was pleased to see they brought me an entire shaker of my drink. That is until I took my first sip, it tasted sour. So I told the waitress this wasn't a dirty martini, she went back to the bar to check. She came back with a shot of olive juice that the bartender forgot and poured it in my shaker. Another taste made me realize, this was the most disgusting drink I have ever tasted. I tried to explain to her that dirty martini's don't have a sour mix in it. She didn't get it and walked away.
The entrees we picked were a Taco plate and Shrimp Chili Relleno. BF thought his taco were good but he would have preferred a flour tortilla instead of corn. The shrimp relleno wasn't bad. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, the poblano gave it a little heat and the suiza sauce was a nice compliment to it, unfortunately it was smothered in cheese. It would have been excellent minus the cheese. Â The sides were Spanish rice and charro beans, both were good but not outstanding.
For a change, we had the churros for dessert. It was nicely cooked without being too greasy, served with a side of vanilla ice cream. It was sprinkled with cinnamon. It would have been better with a bowl of chocolate to dip it in.
Not sure if I will come back. I had a valid complaint about my drink and was ignored. Further proof was on the bill, it said MEXICAN Martini with a shot of "Dirty" listed. The prices were reasonable.
This place was NOT vegan friendly. Â The only vegan items on the menu were the guacamole salad, and a spinach salad with green apples, grapes, sweet pecans, sunflower seeds, and tomatoes. Â I ordered both. Â The guacamole was decent, as were the chips and salsa. Â Â The salad wasn't great. Â The spinach was wilted and soggy, the raspberry vinaigrette was very syrupy, the apple slices were too large, and the pecans tasted suspiciously like walnuts, but maybe that was just the mix of flavor between the pecans and the sunflower seeds. Â I don't actually remember sunflower seeds.
The rice has a chicken base, the tortillas are made with lard, and the only vegan beans are the black beans. Â The waitress also thought they used butter on the grill, but I didn't make her check. Â There weren't any vegetable fajitas or burritos on the menu. Â The waitress seemed very willing to have them make me something, but it would be made with corn tortillas and black beans. Â There were some items on the menu that had potential. Â Poblano peppers, grilled cactus, and fresh jalapeno peppers. Â I think I could have come up with something good, but it was also crazy busy in there, and I didn't feel like bothering.
The decor was cute. Â They said it's usually that busy on Thursday through Saturday. Â It was PACKED. Â They had several giant fans going to combat the heat from the continually swinging doors, and the wait area seemed to get in the way of the pass bar. Â They also had Mexican music playing.
My husband ordered Carnitas. Â He said they were good. Â He also ordered top shelf Margaritas that came in a glass the size of a fish bowl! Â They were VERY tart, but good.
Don't be fooled by all the cars in the parking lot -This isn't the "place to be seen" - this isn't the best food in the area. This is probably the first review I have written where I have negative emotions while writing. I feel cheated and duped.
As I lay on the couch of the tex-mex therapist - "It all started one night when I was looking for something new or different..." This place was packed and looked interesting. We got a table immediately which seemed to be the only good thing during the entire experience. Then the food & beverage relocation engineer walked up and asked us for our drink order. I ordered the Brazil version of the Mojito. This is the minute my life changed. I didn't get an "I'm sorry" or "oops" I got "We don't have those" - hmmm really? What's this? pointing to  the drink on their menu. Fine. whatever. move on. So we move onto the food selections. It was ok.  It was all "ok" or sub par and not worth the price tag on each item.
I won't be back and there is nothing you can do to entice me back. Here's why:
1. Way overpriced for location, atmosphere, and quality of food
2. Menu looks like they took some things from a place down the road
3. Los Reyes and Jardin's cheaper but better food period.
4. The place is soooo loud - and not just chatter loud. Â It was a whole different level of annoying loud.
5. Need more staff to handle the crowd
6. Cheap ingredients used for premium price
I love great tex-mex and this isn't it. This is a convenient location for people who live very close by and too lazy drive another 1/4-1/2 mile up the road.
Complete disappointment in our adventure to find something new.
Very good food and, for the most part, very good service. The first time we went we did not have the best experience with our waitress, but since it had just opened and the food was outstanding, we decided to give it another try. Los Chilaquiles did not let us down. The waiter was very quick and attentive and the food was once again outstanding.
Finally, we don't have to drive to Austin or Leander for good Tex Mex.
What can I say...I was expecting blow me away tex-mex, but we found our bellies full (on chips) and our tastebuds looking for more. The food was beautiful. We started eating and were disappointed. Â The refried beans had no flavor; the charro beans had no flavor except for the fresh jalapenos in them; the fajita meat was beautiful, yet lacked ANY kind of flavor. Â The cheese enchiladas have good quality cheese in them, but the chili gravy was bland. Â I don't know what happened here, because before we went over there, I read reviews and it looked like we might be headed to a good place, but we were disappointed...except for the Pacifico and the small (but large) margarita!!!
We will be heading north from now on to our 'regular' tex-mex spot, as it has continued to make us happy. Â Just wanted to try something different, but ended up sorry that we did.
It's a cute little establishment though. Â I'd go back JUST for drinks.
Me love tex-mex and me likey quality meat. I found myself in this far west area of Austin due to work and i was hungry. Yelped a few places but due to the nature of yelp mapping, everything that came up in the area as "close" was actually based on "as the crow flies" and not actual driving distance. A couple of places were "1.5 miles away" but actually 30 miles away because of the lake. So, We stopped here as we were driving by.
I have personal issues that I only discuss with my overpaid therapist regarding ordering meat and and actually eating it. But, at Los Chilaquiles I hesitantly ordered the beef fajitas because I had plenty of queso and salsa prior to dinner and I was confident that my caloric intake was met whether I actually consumed my entree or not.
When the plate of sizzling bovine appeared, I was a happy girl. I dressed my first fajita taco and took a bite. mmmmm. yummy. I finished that one and continued with a second and a third. There was never a struggle between my teeth and the meat, trying to chomp through a rubbery piece of meat. No fatty grossness.
Eat Here. yummm
PS- the service was great too.
The Wait staff was great, ambiance is cute but alas, the food is so very boring. Â Sigh, I really wanted to love this place because it's right by my house. Â I've been here twice. Â I can't remember what I ordered the first time but this time I had beef fajitas. Â The Charro beans were "bacony" and yummy. Â The beef was tough and overcooked. Â Everything else looked like food but had no flavor whatsoever. Â The salsa tasted like pureed tomatoes. Â The rice was overcooked and smelled like, I'm not kidding, body odor. Â The "homemade" tortillas tasted store bought.
On the bright side, my husband liked the shrimp though, He said it was, "better than most but not as good as Jardin de Carona" which is right down the street. Â
I really hope this place gets its act together or it won't last long.
Other reviewers have mentioned that CP has numerous Mexican joints but I'm glad for this one because none of the others has been particularly, well, great. Los Chilaquiles was! I'm thrilled because some recent additions got my hopes up, only to be dashed, but Chilaquiles finally saved the day. Good Mexican indeed exists in Cedar Park.
My husband and I got our usuals to see how this joint compared: beef chimichanga for him and cheese enchiladas for me. Ding ding ding! These were winners! He loved his chimichange and the nice touch of a layer of suiza sauce on the plate. I totally dug the enchiladas and I got them with verde sauce which I swear was made with tomatillos hand-picked that day. So. Good.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that we did not get chips and salsa when we settled in. We were given or drinks then finally flagged someone down to ask for C&S. We got them just as our food came out. We also had to wait a long time to pay. That said, the two salsas were great. The classic red was tomato-y and well balanced. The darker salsa had that great zingy tomatillo taste. I couldn't decide which I liked better but enjoyed testing and retesting.
The servers were very friendly and the atmosphere was ok. I'm not big on the weird Chilaquiles caricatures on each booth but the earthy tiles and trendy light fixtures were nice.
All in all, the mister and I can't wait to go back to try more menu items and some margaritas. So glad there is finally decent, wanna-go-back Tex-Mex in CP!
Hmmm... reading the other reviews, I can only surmise that we had an unusually bad experience. Â Went for late lunch on Saturday - the place was pretty crowded. Â Chips and salsa came - I thought they were pretty good. Â Can't comment on the margaritas because we were weren't up for booze that early in the day.
There were four of us - had pretty typical items - tortilla soup, chimichangas, enchiladas, etc. Â There was clearly some sort of mixup with our order because the food took about 45 minutes to come out - but it did look like others around us were being served much quicker. Â When the food did show up it was hit or miss - the soup was dead cold, the chimichanga was chicken instead of the beef that was ordered and was swimming in a pool of orange grease. Â The chicken enchiladas were really good.
The server did apologize for the slow service and the cold food, but no visit from the manager or offer to improve the situation.
Finally, as we ate, the chip basket was empty and our drinks all needed refills. Â When we finished, one person's plate was cleared, but the rest of us had to look at our dirty dishes until we mercifully got the check and could escape.
So - I doubt that we will go back - even if the other reviews make me think that I must have had an unusual experience. Â My only other comment was that there was some sort of sewage smell coming from the area by the bathrooms - maybe the freeze caused a plumbing issue?
Man, seems like every shopping center on 183 alone starting from Cypress Creek up to 1431 has a Tex-Mex or a Mexican restaurant! Especially near the end of 2010 at least 5 new ones have opened up. Add those 5 to the 5 that have already been here forever then you've got 10 in just a 5 mile radius. Do we have that many hot sauce eaten peeps here in CP and the surrounding areas to support all these Tex-Mex and Mex-Mex places?
We stopped by here for lunch and were very impressed with the place, price, food annnd service that we got from here. Can't wait to go back and explode the rest of the menu.
Â
May the best man win!!!
We went there for dinner. The service was outstanding! The food was very good. I prefer a little more spice but the taste was excellent. For a small restaurant, it has a large and varied menu. It took a while to read through it. It took even longer to decide what to get. My wife and granddaughter had chicken dishes. Both commented that the chicken tasted as if it had been boiled in salt water. It was too wet for the tacos. I had a steak ranchera (sp). It was very good. I especially liked the rice.
Overall, we really enjoyed the restaurant. I am looking forward to going back for lunch so I can try their Super Burrito. I highly recommend this place.
This is Americanized mexican food served at a bar. It's just that....bar food. Everything was bland, salsa wasn't spicy, menu is WAY TOO BIG and I had the Mexican martini but after one mouthful of what tasted like kool-aid, I sent it back. For a bar, the ALCOHOLIC DRINKS are WAY OVER PRICED and I couldn't even taste the alcohol in mine. Waitress tried to lie to me and tell me the bartender put top shelf tequila in it because they were out of the other. I know better. Â I do have to say the bottled beer was good, the chips were not bad but otherwise a pretty good waste of money.
If this place is going to survive, they need to change the name to something Americans can pronounce.
And for all the people that thought this "Mexican" food was good, try eating at El Caribe on North Lamar and come back to los Chilika likes bar and grill and rate again.
I've been twice now and enjoyed the experience both times. Met the owner last night...Santiago...nice guy and seemed very interested in making sure our experience was good. Great service both times and well trained wait staff. I agree with the previous review that the lighting is a little bright. I also think they should spice up the food a bit. It's a little bland in my native Texan opinion.
I'd go back because the service has been great, the food seems fresh and does taste good. The place is clean.
Perhaps most important, the food and drinks are moderately priced which is key since I have 5 mouths to feed :) They have a "reverse" happy hour from 8:30 to close with $1 off drinks.
