I am huge fan of Luckenbach! The place has a feel like you stepped back in time and found a party in the backwoods. Luckenbach is a Texas staple that can't be imitated. The beers are always cold and inexpensive with a cool gift shop worth taking a look around. Although they don't serve liquor and sometimes the acts are not that great. Despite that I still give Luckenbach 5 stars. The Christmas show in my opinion the best time to go. The weather is cold with fires going to keep warm with a cold beer in your hand. There are fewer things better then being under a big star Texas night but Luckenbach captures that essence. Do yourself a favor and hit up Luckenbach. Especially if you are staying in Fredericksburg. It's a very short drive out there so there are no excuses. Just a heads up though. Luckenbach is literally in the middle of nowhere so pay attention when you get close or you'll miss the entrance.

This is a must stop on your tour of Central Texas dancehalls. Catching a big concert is a good thing, but just stopping by on a Sunday afternoon, drinking a Lone Star and listening to a circle of impromtu picking is my favorite thing to do.

Stopped there just before new year and people were catching up on old times. Very rustic, raw woodsy setting. Hangout for everyone, all invited. Small window side cafe making burgers, chicken, sausage. Another area serves beer and soda. Personable people hanging out under the oak trees. Lots of motorcycle guys and gals frequent the place so you will see some gorgeous Harleys and assorted makes. The dance hall is big, slippery wooden floor just right for dancing. Music is very good and then there are people picking under the oak trees. A must stop by, check the website for entertainment and events. Easy to miss off in secluded area.

Drive slow or you will miss it.

This place just makes me feel happy. It is quintessential Texas hill country. Small country store, dance hall, nice people...

I would recommend it to anyone, but I could see a certain type of person getting there and saying, "what, this is lukenbach?, what is all the fuss about" but I don't particularly like those people and truthfully the person who wouldn't like Lukenbach is also the same type of person who would never go there or stop there.

Luckenbach and Gruene Hall are probably my two must go to at least once and you will have a great time places in central Texas.

Do not drive along Highway 290, between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, without stopping in Luckenbach,

Now it seems this "Dance Hall" entry is the catch all for all things Luckenbach, but to me the best part is just sitting out back on a weekday, drinking a beer (Real Ale Brewing is right around the corner in Blanco) and (hopefully) listening to some acoustic jam and watching the chickens scratch in the dirt.

Perfect!

It's Luckenbach, Texas. Are you kidding? Who wouldn't give it five stars?

I LOVE LUCKENBACH!!

Laid back, easy going outdoor atmosphere where everyone is casual, relaxed & friendly.

Grab a bite to eat (the food's good), sit down under the trees at any one of the picnic tables or benches, people will scoot over & make room for you, meet & mingle with new & old friends (everyone there is there for a good time). Watch & listen to great live music (okay, maybe not always "great" but the cheap, cold beers help with that), watch the chickens peck the ground, with an occasional rooster high up in the tree. Stroll the grounds, play washers, take a picture on the longhorn, visit the general store, there's plenty of souvenirs & gifts. The dance hall itself is pretty awesome. I try to go as often as I can, I love it there!

I have been here several times and it never gets old. I've gone during the day when there is nothing really going on except maybe a local artist strumming his guitar, and I've gone when there is live entertainment for a charity benefit. Even when nothing much is going on, I love spending time lazing around Luckenbach. You can't leave without enjoying a beer or two, and we always buy something in the store. Everyone should visit here at least once to say they've seen this little Texas treasure.

Strolling around this beloved landmark, cold beer in hand (Shiner if you are a true Texan), one can easily see the appeal this remote hangout offered to Waylon and Willie and the boys...as the song goes. This was undoubtedly the ideal outpost for drinking hard and playing even harder. Thankfully, it remains and so does its permeating sense of Texas independence and artistic freedom. Music acts are good and the shows are intimate. Beer is ice cold and the service is always friendly. Go already!

We visited during the day when nothing was going on, just to shoot some pictures and stroll about the grounds. While shooting pics out back on the bridge, a red wasp stung my girlfriend on the hand. We sped into the bar and asked for some ice to take down the swelling and take out some of the pain.

Not only did they supply us with some ice, they supplied us with some benadryl cream to rub into the sting, and kept checking on my girlie while we sipped rootbeers and stared at all the paraphernalia.

If it's winter, bring a jacket. If it's summer, bring some shorts. If you're looking for random world class music talent go to Lukenbach. Luckenbach is the quintesential Texas dance hall (along with Gruene Hall) made famous by the Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson song "Luckenbach, Texas". The dance hall is closed during the day but has live music during the evenings on weekends - the bar however is open all day, good thing too or they'd have a riot on their hands! Luckenbach draws lots of bikers, car enthusiasts, cowboys and frat guys - making for some pretty interesting people watching. This is the perfect place to grab a beer, play some washers and listen to the country hippies jam - there's been a jam session of some sort going pretty much every time I've been out here. There is a general store that sells t-shirts and chachkies and on the weekends there's usually someone grilling up some food. There is also a nice swimming hole on grape creek close to the road that's worth investigating on a hot afternoon...

Tucked snugly in the middle of Hill Country, Nowhere in Particular County, TX is Luckenbach. Made famous in song, this neighborhood watering hole attracts locals, tourists, musicians, cowboy poets, and the occasional chicken combo. By combo I mean percussion, not dumplings. On the evening we stopped by we heard some lovely rustic tunes from some folks who just happened by and some witty cowboy poetry with insightful commentary on the times. Not to be missed.

I have yet to see any music in the actual hall, so this review is more for the food, store, and general awesomeness.

How you could not love this place, I don't know. The people here are great to hang out with, there was some fabulous music happening out back of the store while we were there, and all the food we had was delicious (including my frito pie in the bag, which included also the necessary fixin's for a true pie). The atmosphere outside is great with plenty of seating and places to bring a crowd.

Inside the general store, you'll find plenty of friendly faces and cookie souvenirs to take home to family and friends, or else keep for yourself and be the envy of all who see. From t-shirts to magnets, blankets to cowboy hats, there's a lot of groovy loot to choose from. And in case you need something cold to wash down your burger or fresh made potato chip spirals, there's plenty of cold beer at the bar in the back of the store. Just make sure you bring cash for food and drink or you'll need to use the atm around the side of the building.

I'll definitely be heading back for a concert asap!

If there were more stars I'd give them as many as I could! I love Luckenbach! The music is always fantastic! The people are friendly and easy going - which is an understatement..... The beer is cold and the dance floor gets jump'n! The stand that's there has one of the best BBQ pork sandwiches with slaw! We get one (or two) every time we are there! Headed there this weekend - can't wait!

Always a music venue; but last weekend Luckenbach had its annual car show. Bikes, cars, and great people watching!

Lots of photos!

It's not the best dance hall in Texas, but it is most famous one with it's own hit song. I wanted to love it, but was left thinking it's not as good as some other places I have seen music. I just felt that there could be something more here. In looking at the current schedule I felt it could be better. The gift shop with everything "Lukenbach" just felt a bit off. The food trailers, felt like just that - food trailers. It is on a sprawling piece of land with many acres that essentially make up the (unincorporated) town. There are some nice places to walk and wander. I'm sure there will be a day in the future that I will return.

What a cool place!! I was trying to find a unique birthday present for my little brother who lives out of state and someone recommended driving out to the gift shop in Luckenbach; I'm glad I did. The gift shop is located in the post office and is filled with some pretty nice stuff (as far as tourist stuff goes). They have the usuals; t-shirts (in every color imaginable), bumper stickers, road signs, ceramic wine corks, key chains, etc....you get the idea. And everything says "Luckenbach" on it. I was really surprised that nothing in the store was over priced, or, it didn't seem to be anyway.
If you're looking for something that is uniquely Texas, or you just want a place to hang out and drink a beer while listening to live music, then this is definitely a "must do" when in the Fredericksburg area.

NOTE: when driving to Luckenbach from Fredericksurg, you will pass by a feed mill that advertises Luckenbach souvenirs and t-shirts about a mile before you get to Luckenbach. Keep driving till you actually get to Luckenbach. I made the mistake of stopping at this place by accident. The merchandise seemed to be of lower quality.

This place is one of two things.

1) A silly place for tourists from around the world to stop in and grab a t-shirt and spend some international monetary units on beers while listening to some local country and western music.

2) A heavenly spot where if the timing is just right, you might catch some true Texas magic.

You decide.

This place is definitely not what I was expecting. ( Don't know just exactly what I was expecting ) What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon though. Drinking long necks and listening to whoever decides to get up and perform on the small lean-to stage or a a picnic table. Some are absolutely terrible and some are absolutely great! Poets, singers, pickers, back up players and maybe even some stars. Just a few buildings in the middle of nowhere, but if you are visiting San Antonio - experience Luckenbach.

This continues to be the one place I frequent over and over again. I admit, many of my friends and family don't see the allure, but just as many do.

The size of Luckenbach is shocking to most, but it's really an amazing place with a cool history. Take the kids out and let them run around on the land. Play washers and sit and have a drink listening to some fun music. It's a Texas landmark and really does appeal to many.

Alright so who can beat a population of TWO (a previous post had it as three but from what I hear, there was a death in a family) and yet still have so many people come in and visit every weekend in order to party and unwind all at the same time?? Live music (this dude played the theme to King of the Hill the last I went and that's just too freakin cool in my book!), CHICKENS everywhere, and only two buildings in the doggone place. One building is a dancehall and the other wears multiple hats as a post office, saloon, and a general store. From motorcycle rallies to car shows... a lot of different events happen here in this laid back town. Today marked the start of "Pickin' & Grillin" where you bring your own favorite meat and cook it in an open pit fire! Unfortunately it runs Mondays and only to the end of July but still. If you get a chance, it might definitely be worth it!

P.S. Beware the chickens - they're EVERYWHERE!!!!

I've lived in Texas all my life, and finally got to go to Luckenbach (population, 3) this weekend. It is quite an experience and everyone needs to go at least once.

We pulled up and I was struck by the "motorcycle parking" area, set apart by bales of hay.

Really, Luckenbach consists of a few buildings, one of which is the bathroom trailer. There's the general store where you can buy your shirts and mugs and hats and pins and whatever memorabilia you could possibly dream of. Just past that is a bar, which can be reached from the inside or the outside. You won't find your fancy beers here. Only the good cowboy or Harley riding stuff--Lone Star, Bud Light and so forth.

Christine A's review was spot-on. If you wear anything other than jeans and maybe a Luckenback shirt, you will stick out like a sore thumb ("Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away
This coat and tie is choking me"). We had a hamburger and a spiral fried potato. It is what it is. Not a fabulous burger, but that's not why we were there.

We ate it by the fire pit, which is close to another stage. As we sat, the main bands got ready to get on the stage in the dance hall. I couldn't help but people-watch. Mullets, long hair, leather jackets, bandannas, jeans, jeans, jeans (that's it!). ("Baby it's time we got back to the basics of love")

You can cross a little bridge to see more of the land, right by a nice little stream. You've gotta go. The music's great, the people are great. It's true Texas livin' And remember, everybody is somebody in Luckenbach.

"Let's go to Luckenbach Texas with Waylon and Willie and the boys
... and blue eyes cryin' in the rain out in Luckenbach Texas
ain't nobody feelin' no pain."

According to John Steinbeck, "Luckenbach is a state of mind". I agree. It's a little town that is a dance hall with a sheriff (who is also the mayor) and a general store that has been in business since 1849. It's Texas. It's laid back. It's a treasure.

Waylon Jennings plays here in the summer. Gary P. Nunn plays for the annual Hug-In Valentine's Day Dance. I've seen famous musicians sitting and picking on a stone fence or at a picnic table. My musician brother sat in and picked along one night. This is an old Texas music venue and I still like it as much (maybe more) as some of the new Texas music venues. It is real, honest and simple. Like they say, "Everybody is somebody in Luckenbach".

You don't have to put your shiny shirts and tight skirts on when you go--the locals are wearing boots and jeans. You won't find bright lights or neon except for the beer signs over the bar. You can dance, listen to great country music, soak up the history and people watch. You can enjoy an ice cold beer with a burger or some good barbecue. You can shop for some cool souvenirs at the General Store.

Check the website before you go to get directions and the schedule. It's about 90 minutes from Austin. Treat yourself to some talented musicians, an easy going crowd and fine country music--much of it free! http://www.luckenbachtex…

So, like the song says, "Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas with Willie, Waylon and the boys..." And, who knows, they could actually be there.
