We were trying to avoid overpriced tourist food near the Great Sand Dunes, and this seemed to be the absolute nearest restaurant on our route that wasn't right outside of the gates. Â I read the reviews and had reasonable but still pretty high hopes. Â
We were definitely not impressed. Â I'm giving this place 2 stars for our friendly and efficient server, but unfortunately that's all I can do. Â We ordered chips and salsa, I had chicken tacos, and my husband had beef fajitas. Â The chips were the best part of the meal. Â The salsa was bland but I'd prefer that over spicy. Â
Things got worse from there. Â The beef was the worst my husband had ever had, and with all the traveling we do that is something. Â My chicken was shredded (from a can perhaps?) with dark meat and fatty pieces. Â I couldn't eat much of it. Â The taco shells were straight from a grocery store package and so were the tortilla shells and literally everything else we were served. Â I wanted to like this place, but found no authentic home prepared recipes here, and I just can't recommend cheap pre-packaged items with a $34 price tag. Â :(
The food here was not good!
My French Dip had almost no flavor. ITs like they tried to make it bland. And the taco was terrible. You'd think some Mexican food in a diner in a small town who have some flava! No, these were pre-formed shells like you get at the grocery store, no flavor to he eat at all. WOW.
As impel lunch took over an hour, including waiting 15 minutes to get our check when we anted to roll.
I wanted to love Lu's. I don't.
My wife and I stopped here on our vacation from Kansas City. Let me tell you... that it was some awesome food!!! Â Small, older building, nice staff and prices comparable to any other establishments. Â
I had the Tamales, they were stuffed with shredded pork, rice and beans on side and those were yummy as well. Â Wife had the Chile Rellenos and the verde sauce was great. Had just the right amount of melted cheese on top, served with beans and rice. Â
The owner is nice, she owns another place as well and is having a great summer. If you are driving through, give her a try.
I drive to Taos from Denver quite a bit. I go out of my way to eat @ Lu's. That's saying quite a lot since their are so many great restaurants in Taos.
Lu's sources the best green chiles she can find (from Pueblo). This makes all the difference, as she roasts them off in the fall for use all winter & spring.
I will reiterate, Big Valley & double hookup burgers & The chile cheese steak are some of the best things I've ever eaten. Take a Philly Steak and put green chile in it. Genius. Genuis!
